In Rob Reiner's classic 80s rom-com When Harry Met Sally, there's a moment where Billy Crystal's Harry asks Meg Ryan's Sally, "Don't you have a dark side?" And whilst in that film, as in so many others over the years, that question serves as the set-up for a Crystal comic zinger, in Sarah Thorp's upcoming Apple TV+ psychological thriller Before, it looks like we'll be seeing the iconic funnyman's own dark side for the first time. Here, Crystal plays Eli, a grieving child psychiatrist who develops an inexplicable bond with troubled patient Noah (Jacobi Jupe) — and if the first trailer's anything to go by, then it looks like things may be about to take a turn for the supernatural in Crystal's dramatic lead debut. Check it out:

It takes a while to realize that the hero of Peacock’s new crime dramedy Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist isn’t, in fact, any of the series’ convoy of flamboyant gangsters, hoodlums and petty criminals but, rather, the city of Atlanta. And that the titular heist, despite the stated financial value, is really one of prestige and global recognition
Or perhaps the hero of Fight Night is Kevin Hart’s Chicken Man, not because he’s a character of virtue or ingenuity, but because Chicken Man represents Atlanta — a scrapper with big dreams learning to overcome his disreputable past by thinking of the wider world beyond himself.
Full credit to Shaye Ogbonna, adapting the podcast of the same title, for making a comic thriller with the heart of an American Studies graduate thesis. I’m not being sarcastic! Fight Night has some actual things on its mind, plus...

Nickel Boys, RaMell Ross’ big screen interpretation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Nickel Boys, had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival’s Herzog Theatre on Friday night. Reactions among attendees, including numerous Academy members, have been strongly divided — many were impressed and deeply moved by the film, while others were left cold by it — leaving its Oscar prospects somewhat up in the air.
Ross is a tremendously gifted filmmaker who was Oscar-nominated and won a Peabody Award for his unconventional 2018 documentary feature Hale County This Morning, This Evening, which looked at the Black experience in a part of Alabama. Now just 42, he is making his narrative directorial debut with Nickel Boys, the script of which he co-wrote with his Hale County producer Joslyn Barnes.

The process of turning Laura Lippman’s 2019 novel Lady in the Lake into an Apple TV+ limited series began more than three years ago and involves the series’ late executive producer, Jean-Marc Vallée, who died suddenly in late December 2021.
Vallée and producing partner Nathan Ross had read the book, with Ross checking it out quickly after its release thanks to a rave review from Stephen King in The New York Times. Ross told Vallée about the novel, thinking of Natalie Portman for the role of Maddie Schwartz, and Vallée wanted Alma Har’el for the project due to her work on the film Honey Boy, Shia Labeouf’s semiautobiographical drama.
Portman too saw and was impressed by Honey Boy.

It would be just like the creative team behind Sunny to use a question as the title of an episode. Lord knows the series has been nothing but one question after another.
While the endless inquiries have been aggravating, they have also been one of the series’ biggest draws.
Many science fiction shows will worry about losing audiences if they don’t spoon-feed viewers exposition. That’s certainly not the case with Sunny.
(Courtesy of Apple TV+)
The show wisely utilized so many secrets because now that we are approaching the end, all of the other shoes can drop.
It’s been a wild, wacky adventure, but this ride is ending. Sunny is finally answering some big questions as a parting gift.
And they are doing it with all the camp and comedy that an A24 series can deliver.

Just a year ago, David Corenswet likely wasn't a name you'd heard. Now that the actor has been cast as Clark Kent in director James Gunn's upcoming "Superman" movie, however, you've probably been hearing his name quite a bit. Following an inauspicious end to the DC Extended Universe and an equally inauspicious end to Henry Cavill's run as the Man of Steel, Gunn announced that the newly-launched DC Studios' first film would be his "Superman" movie, led by none other than Corenswet.
This will no doubt prove to be Corenswet's breakthrough role. Prior to his casting in the inaugural DC Studios outing, the Juilliard alum had played a significant roles in several high-profile films and TV shows, from the projectionist in Ti West's A24 horror "Pearl" to aspiring actor Jack Castello in Ryan Murphy's "Hollywood" on Netflix. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Lady in the Lake Season 1 finale, “My Story.”] Lady in the Lake‘s finale brought together Natalie Portman‘s Maddie and Moses Ingram‘s Cleo for one wild twist as it was revealed Cleo’s friend Dora (Jennifer Mogbock) was the woman discarded in the lake. Believed to be Cleo, she used her friend’s body, rendered lifeless after a lethal overdose to help aid her escape from the clutches of Shell Gordon (Wood Harris) and associates. When she realizes that Maddie’s investigative reporting could mess up her escape plan, Cleo seeks the woman out, promising to provide evidence to take down Shell and his criminal operation as long as Maddie agrees to stop investigating her “murder.” Ultimately, Cleo is successful in her infiltration of Shell’s business, and delivers the evidence to Maddie, giving her a big journalistic win. As the women move forward down their differing paths,...

For the first 100 days of filming Lady in the Lake, actress Moses Ingram was nowhere to be found. But the thing is: Ingram’s riveting portrayal of a missing Black woman who is believed to have been found dead in the show’s titular body of water has become the prestige drama’s breakout story.

It’s about 8:15 in the morning on a warm, midsummer Friday about 40 miles north-northeast of the Hollywood TMZ, as I try to keep pace with the brown Porsche 911 in front of me.
We are winding through the back canyons of Angeles Crest Highway in Angeles National Forest on the way to Newcomb’s Ranch for the Good Vibes Breakfast Club. I pick up the walkie-talkie in the front seat of the Hyundai Elantra N — the tricked-out sport version of the brand’s sedan — and radio over, “Don’t wait for me, keep going.”
Moments later, the brown 911 — delightfully called “Rolling Coffee Bean” by its owner, actor and comedian Byron Bowers — speeds off through the straightaways and esses of Little Tujunga Canyon until it’s a smudge in the distance.

Editor’s Note: The following post contains spoilers for Apple’s “Lady in the Lake.”
Like some of the best murder mysteries, Alma Har’el’s “Lady in the Lake” is not so much a whodunnit as a howdunnit — with a few good twists along the way. The Apple TV+ drama based on Laura Lippman’s 2019 novel aired its seventh and final episode on August 23, revealing the final pieces in the puzzle of Maddie Morganstern (Natalie Portman), Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram), and Tessie Durst (Bianca Belle).
Throughout the seven-episode series — which started with Tessie’s disappearance and then death — Cleo’s narration has hinted at the connection between herself and Maddie, and the eventual consequences of what binds them. After weeks of alluding to a sinister and even fatal ending, the finale gives both women the kind of freedom they didn’t have in their old lives.
What really happened to Cleo?...

The one thing you should take away from Lady in the Lake Season 1 Episode 7 is that while you’re writing your story, remember to live it as well.
It has been one crazy, wild episode after another, filled with incredible storytelling and acting.
Audiences will never forget the epic journey Natalie Portman and Moses Ingram took them on as they told their stories.
(Courtesy of Apple TV+)
With only seven episodes, the series weaved a world filled with dreams up against misogyny and racism. Against classism and violence. Against life and death.
Lady in the Lake brought the finale full circle. The story started with a dead body, and now it’s ending with another.
As a famous playwright once wrote, “For in that sleep of death what dreams may come. When we have shuffled off this mortal coil, must give us pause.”

So, Apple TV’s Lady in the Lake was all about two women trying to free themselves from the shackles of patriarchal society. And even though I didn’t relate to the plight of Maddie Schwartz much, Cleo Johnson happens to be my favorite character in the series. Cleo was not only fighting against society or Shell Gordon in particular, but she was at war with herself, too. She’d always wanted to be a stage singer like her father, Alvin, who used to play the trumpet in Gordon’s The Pharaoh. A teenage Cleo loved to sing songs with her Pa, but things changed when he suddenly disappeared after winning big at Gordon’s number game. Some 4 years later, a young Cleo decided to participate in the talent competition with her best friend, Dora Carter. But before Cleo could make her dreams come true, she remembered her last memories with her father,...

Lady in the Lake has finally come to an end. Set in Baltimore in the ‘60s, the miniseries has been centered around Maddie and Cleo, whose lives collide after the disappearance of a girl, Tessie Durst. Maddie showed interest in Tessie’s disappearance because she was the daughter of her ex, Allan Durst, and the granddaughter of Hal Durst, with whom Maddie once had an affair. But Cleo disappeared after she’d participated in an assassination attempt and tried to use her boss Shell Gordon’s lottery racket to gain some money, and Maddie tried to solve that. Her methods were messy, and she ended up getting stabbed by Tessie’s killer, Ms. Zawadzkie. While recuperating at the hospital, Cleo paid her a visit, thereby revealing that she had faked her death. Why did Cleo do something like that? Well, the answer lies in the final episode of Lady in the Lake.

TV has always loved a murder mystery. From news headlines that preceded the true crime boom to the heydays of “Poirot” and “Murder, She Wrote,” audiences have always been drawn in by sinister theories — and the often squeamish truth. There’s a morbid fascination with the minds of criminals but also a basic human desire to answer questions, find logic, and make sense of a senseless world.
To honor the end of Alma Har’el’s “Lady in the Lake,” which airs its seventh and final episode August 23 on Apple TV+, IndieWire’s TV team got to thinking about the best TV murder mysteries in recent years. We didn’t include episodic procedurals (sorry to “Columbo”) or anything before the 21st century. We opted for the “whodunit” over the “howcatchem” — but occasionally allowed a pick where the “who” is known but the “how” drives the series. Single seasons of larger shows...

It seems like only yesterday there was a little movie on the rise starring one Mr. Keanu Reeves.
Now, ten years later, that movie has become a full-fledged franchise with multiple spinoffs and sequels in the works.
Unlike other action franchises, the John Wick movies deliver a critically acclaimed cinematic experience with every installment.
(Lionsgate/Screenshot)
The John Wick movies have garnered major favor with audiences and critics alike. So, it comes as no surprise that the films have earned multiple awards nominations and wins.
After multiple films, including a fifth on the way, Keanu Reeves shows no signs of hitting the breaks any time soon.
This Lionsgate gold mine is still going strong because here is everything we know so far about the upcoming series John Wick: Under The High Table!

The 2025 Oscars race for Best Actress is heating up, with Expert pundits now giving the early edge to Mikey Madison from writer-director Sean Baker‘s dramedy “Anora.” She plays the title role (Ani for short), a young sex worker from Brooklyn who impulsively marries a man named Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn), the son of a Russian oligarch. Once the news reaches Russia, her fairytale is threatened as Vanya’s parents set out for New York to get the marriage annulled.
“Anora” was launched into serious awards contention following its Palm d’Or win at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. It is the first American film to pull off a victory there since “The Tree of Life” in 2011. Madison, who is known for roles in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (2019) and “Scream” (2022), currently stars in the Apple TV+ limited series “Lady in the Lake” with Natalie Portman.

The previous episode of Lady in the Lake revealed that Hal Durst and Maddie had an affair in the past. She got pregnant, and since Hal didn’t want people to know about it, he asked her to either get an abortion or put up the child for adoption. This established that the animosity between Allan and Maddie was not just because of a bad breakup, and her search for Tessie wasn’t random; it was actually quite personal. That said, it was weird when she divided her attention between the investigation into Tessie’s murder and the disappearance of Cleo Johnson. And since it was too much to handle for one person, she kept hitting dead ends and got frustrated. Seeing no other option, she went to Ms. Zawadzkie to talk to her about Tessie’s murder and whether or not Reggie (Shell Gordon’s right-hand man) was there...

Holy crap, things have certainly taken a turn since the last episode of The Ark.
As a series that prides itself on keeping the characters at the focal point, the writers are stretching their creative muscles.
There’s been a fair amount of change from episode to episode on The Ark Season 2.
(Aleksandar Letic/Ark TV Holdings, Inc./Syfy)
“The Other You” really invigorated the show with laughter and heartfelt moments.
However, it seems like the showrunners are looking to tackle as many genres as possible.
“Museum of Death” was definitely the right title for this episode because it was a horror show!
They left Ftl and ended up in an Event Horizon situation.

In the fourth episode of Lady in the Lake, Maddie started to achieve some form of stability as a journalist at The Baltimore Star. She linked Tessie’s murder to some kind of government experiment, and that got her a post at the newspaper’s helpline desk. But that revelation caused Tessie’s father and Maddie’s former lover, Allan Durst, to reprimand her at a public event. Maddie ended up unleashing her anger on Seth, thereby putting the mother and the son at odds with each other. And when Maddie thought that she could go home and take a breather, she found herself face-to-face with the alleged child killer, Stephan Zawadzkie. Elsewhere in the city, Cleo had started to make a living by exploiting Shell Gordon’s rigged betting racket. But when Gordon learned that the police were rounding up the goons who tried to kill Myrtle on his orders,...

Lady in the Lake is Apple TV+'s latest hit series and new episodes of the thriller drop weekly. But how many episodes are there and when is the series finale? Will there be a second season? Here’s everything we know so you don’t miss out!
Apple TV+ has been on a winning streak this year, releasing some of our favorite shows this year! Before Lady in the Lake, we were glued to our seats every Wednesday to catch a new episode of Presumed Innocent, starring Jake Gyllenhaal. If you missed the legal drama, I absolutely recommend you check it out. All episodes are now streaming on the Apple TV+ platform. Now, our current obsession? Lady in the Lake, starring Natalie Portman.
Having Natalie Portman attached to a project is already a great sign that it’s going to be a brilliant series. But the storytelling and supporting cast also needs to match.

We’re living in a post-“Mad Men” world — and that raises the difficulty level of production designing and dressing the sets of period series like Alma Ha’rel’s “Lady in the Lake,” currently airing on Apple TV+.
“Shows like ‘Mad Men,’ the general public knows what mid-century modern is, and those things are very desirable, and people want to pay money to make it feel like, ‘Oh, my sofa feels like Don Draper’s sofa.’ It’s not as easy and accessible [anymore],” “Lady in the Lake” set decorator Karuna Karmarkar told IndieWire. “It requires really searching far and wide to get all the pieces that fit into the puzzle.” The hard work paid off; the production design of “Lady in the Lake” adroitly conjures up Baltimore of the ’60s in a way that is both stylized and character-defining.

In the third episode of Lady in the Lake, Cleo reached a new level of desperation as she found out that the police were after her for her involvement in the assassination attempt on Myrtle and that the health of her younger son, Lionel, was constantly deteriorating. Given her poor financial condition, she didn’t have the privilege to buy her way out of this situation. So, she turned to Reggie and essentially ordered him to give her access to the rigged betting books so that she could earn some money off of them. Since Reggie was the reason for Cleo’s predicament, he had no option but to help her out. Maddie’s financial status was pretty bad too. That’s why she decided to get The Baltimore Star’s attention by doing a story on the criminal, Stephan Zawadzkie, who had been arrested for allegedly killing Tessie Durst.

Before the title character’s untimely death in the 1960s-set “Lady in the Lake,” Episode 3 sees Cleo (Moses Ingram) throwing all caution to the wind in a wild dance sequence at the jazz club where she works for mobster Shell Gordon (Wood Harris).
She’s just been inadvertently dragged into the mobster-ordered assassination attempt of a local Black politician, one who she — until recently — ardently supported. The word isn’t out yet about her involvement, but Cleo knows that the secret is going to come out at some point.
Her husband Slappy (Byron Bowers) doesn’t know what went down, only that Cleo is not acting like her usual self and that something is deeply wrong. TheWrap spoke to Ingram, who plays Cleo, and creator, showrunner and director Alma Har’el about capturing Cleo’s chaotic emotions before her death.

With their last Joker film, Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix reinvented the character from the ground up. Now, they’re about to change the game all over again in Joker: Folie À Deux – a follow-up that sends Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck (and Lady Gaga’s Harley ‘Lee’ Quinzel) into song-and-dance territory. It’s one of the year’s most eagerly-anticipated films, and the new issue of Empire is your all-access guide.
The September 2024 issue isn’t on newsstands until tomorrow, Thursday 1 August – but you can take a sneak peek at what’s in story below. Order a copy online here.

“Lady in the Lake” is a study in contrasts. It begins with an appropriately ominous cold open of a corpse being thrown into dark, cold waters outside of Baltimore while the victim herself (Moses Ingram) narrates that a collision of worlds is coming between her and the Jewish housewife (Natalie Portman) who will find her body. Already, that’s a lot.
But coming back from the credits, there’s then a seedy, slightly comic spectacle of a hungover guy in a silver beanie and gigantic cardboard mailbox costume (the ‘60s sure seem weird?) pissing in an alley before jogging back out onto the street and into formation as part of a Christmas Day parade. Then there’s director Alma Har’el’s camera, weaving and dancing its way through the crowded chaos, never quite positioning us in one place or one perspective. Tonally and visually, Har’el continually keeps the audience off-balance.
