Britt Robertson (Lux) and Shiri Appleby (Cate) became very close friends during the run of the show and in fact lived together for some time.
Nina Dobrev auditioned for the role of Lux, but network wanted her to stay with her role on The Vampire Diaries (2009).
Based on the actresses real ages, Cate (Shiri Appleby) would have been 11 when she had Lux (Britt Robertson).
Originally titled 'Light Years' (the name Lux means light), it was then retitled 'Parental Discretion Advised' before finally being called 'Life Unexpected'.
Creator Liz Tigelaar had previously used the name Lux in a pilot she had written that was never greenlit, so decided to use it for this show. Tigelaar had come across the name while reading the novel 'The Virgin Suicides' by Jeffrey Eugenides.
