This adaptation of the Japanese novel "The Devotion of Suspect X" by Keigo Higashino has been planned for nearly a decade. Produced by Ekta Kapoor and directed by Sujoy Ghosh, it would have starred Saif Ali Khan (Kareena Kapoor's real-life husband), Aishwarya Rai (replaced by Jacqueline Fernandez, then by Kangana Ranaut), and Fawad Khan. It was shelved in 2014 as it was deemed too similar to the Malayalam film Drishyam (2013) and the in-production Hindi remake Drishyam (2015). Production restarted in 2022 with Kareena Kapoor, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Vijay Verma.
The title changed from 'Devotion of Suspect X' to 'Jaane Jaan' after post-production to better reflect the film's creative direction and appeal to the audience. The title is a reference to the characters singing "Aa Jaane Jaan" at karaoke. The film retains the alternate title 'Suspect X' in some international markets.
Kareena Kapoor's father Randhir acted in a film titled "Jaanejaan" in 1983.
While shooting the movie , Kareena Kapoor Khan's son Taimur was often on the set and Saif Ali Khan minded him. Taimur also called "Action" and "Cut" while filming some scenes.
