It’s been announced that Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty), Brendan Fraser (Killers of the Flower Moon), and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) have joined the cast of Assassination, a mystery thriller that reveals a new take on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Barry Levinson (Rain Man) will direct from a script by David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross), with Levinson and Sam Bromell (Elvis). When Dorothy suspects that Lee Harvey Oswald did not act alone, she uses her fame and influence to find the real killer of JFK. Part murder mystery, part film noir, Dorothy’s journey will put her up against the CIA, Mafia bosses, and the FBI, all who would love nothing more than to make her and this story disappear.

As another year draws near its end, it’s time yet again for another Call of Duty game. For 2024’s iteration, Activision is taking fans back to a fan-favorite sub-series with Black Ops 6. However, if you’re new to the franchise or a lapsed fan looking to return after years away, the Call of Duty landscape may be a bit confusing.
Unlike most games, Call of Duty has ditched individual applications and adopted a centralized hub, kind of like how Fortnite offers multiple game modes in a single ecosystem. When you launch the game,...

It's hard to believe it's somehow been seven whole years since Kathryn Bigelow's last movie, the incendiary John Boyega led Detroit, hit our screens. But now the action thriller specialist behind The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty is preparing to make her return to the directorial hotseat with a new pulse raiser for Netflix — and she's bringing together quite the cast for her comeback. Per Deadline's reporting, Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty star Jason Clarke is the latest to join the director's as-yet-untitled new movie, whose stacked ensemble also includes *deep breath* Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Jared Harris, Jonah Hauer-King, Greta Lee, Tracy Letts, Moses Ingram, Anthony Ramos, and Gabriel Basso!
Plot details on Bigelow's latest remain, much like its title, firmly under wraps at this stage. However, according to reports, the movie will see Bigelow in familiar political thriller territory with the action unfolding at the White House as a national crisis unfolds.

One of Australia’s most admired directors, Thornton broke through in 2009 when his directorial debut, Samson & Delilah won the Cannes Film Festival’s Camera d’Or prize. His 2017 film Sweet Country took home Venice’s Special Jury Prize and his most recent work, The New Boy, starring Cate Blanchett, premiered at Cannes last year.

In a world where female filmmakers are consistently making strides, Zoe Saldaña’s comment has become a matter of controversy. The actress has starred in some iconic action blockbusters like Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy, and she recently expressed her concern about the lack of female directors in the action genre.
Zoe Saldana in Special Ops: Lioness | Bosque Ranch Productions
Her statement has drawn significant attention because there are indeed several female directors who are making waves in the industry. Saldaña’s opinion must’ve been in support of women, but not acknowledging their work makes her look ignorant about the subject.

The curse of success is a fascinating thing in Hollywood. It has always been a "What have you done for me lately?" business. In the case of director Andy Muschietti, in the fall of 2017, he delivered Warner Bros. the biggest horror movie of all time when he nailed an adaptation of Stephen King's much-beloved novel "It." While King's novel had previously been adapted as a TV miniseries in the '90s, Muschietti's take on the material resonated with audiences in a way that nobody could have predicted. The great news for all involved is that King's novel is an unwieldy beast that no one movie could possibly hope to contain.

A middlebrow triumph-against-the-odds sports crowd-pleaser can be a beautiful thing — that is, if it doesn’t pander and lose itself in clichés, and if it has as much respect for reality as it does for getting an inspirational rise out of you. “Unstoppable,” a wrestling drama based on the life of the college champion Anthony Robles, is an honest and stirring entry in the genre, with genuine commercial potential. It has plenty of familiar tropes, but in its no-frills way it touches a nerve of authenticity. The true story it tells is nothing short of extraordinary, and that may be why the filmmakers didn’t feel the need to overhype it.

If there’s one complaint to be made about English Teacher, it’s that there simply isn’t enough of it. The show’s first season comprises just eight 20ish-minute installments — which, in fairness, is well in line with the likes of other FX comedies like What We Do in the Shadows or Dave or The Bear (setting aside whether that last one is really a “comedy” at all).
And yet I couldn’t help feeling that in this case, it wasn’t quite enough. Because with such a sharp ensemble, smart perspective and finely honed sense of humor right out the gate, this one feels built to keep going — toward a broadcast-standard 22-episode season, even, hopefully for years and years. This, to be sure, is a great problem for a freshman series to have. If its initial brevity means English Teacher currently demonstrates more potential than it actually has the time to fulfill,...

Fighting off a killer shark. Becoming immortal. Leading the Deadpool Corps. Is there anything that Blake Lively can't do?
Apparently not! Fresh off a cameo appearance as Lady Deadpool in the box office record-smashing "Deadpool & Wolverine," Lively returned to end the Marvel movie's run at No. 1 on Friday. Her new movie "It Ends With Us," based on the best-selling novel by Colleen Hoover, is on track for an astonishing opening weekend that could reach as high as $50 million. That's particularly notable since "It Ends With Us" is a romantic drama, and that genre is typically relegated to streaming releases these days.
Deadline reports that "It Ends With Us" easily topped the charts on Friday with a $24 million opening day including $7 million in previews, and still ranks above "Deadpool & Wolverine" even without those preview ticket sales. If you’re like me, you spend a lot of August yelling “Summer is over!” to your nearest and dearest — and they don’t take kindly to that. Summer TV is in its twilight, while fall premieres loom on the horizon after the Emmy Awards on September 15.
But summer is not over, and there’s plenty of new titles to stream in the Disney bundle. Disney+ will premiere new Star Wars and “Winnie the Pooh” titles for kids, as well as the original series “Are You Sure?!” following BTS’s Jimin and Jung Kook. Hulu will become home to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” “The Woman King,” “Smile,” and more movie titles, as well as the home for FX series — this month: “The New York Times Presents: Lie to Fly: Documentary Premiere.” Hulu originals “Solar Opposites” returns on August 12, and “Reasonable Doubt” for its second season starting August...

Now showing, this week’s film quiz features questions on animated heroes, real-life villains, and fictional movies within movies.
There are a couple of movies about making movies out now – MaXXXine sees Mia Goth’s aspiring movie star bag a role in a 1980s horror sequel, while Fly Me To The Moon has Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum stage moon-landing footage as a Plan B for NASA in 1969. Accordingly, this week’s film quiz has a whole round on fictional films within real films – think more The Purple Rose Of Cairo in The Purple Rose Of Cairo than “Argo”in Argo.
Once you’ve completed all three rounds, you’ll find a link to a separate post with the correct answers at the bottom of this post. As always, this is all just for fun, but please let us know how you did in the comments (scores out of 30 this week!

Actor Martin Delaney has stepped into the shoes of a tech visionary in the new film “The Man Who Saved the Internet With a Sunflower.”
Delaney portrays Robert Ryan, the founder of Ascend Communications who played a crucial role in the early days of the internet. The film has already garnered critical acclaim, recently winning the Competition Features Audience Award at the Dances With Films festival.
The film chronicles Ryan’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a key player in Silicon Valley during the 1980s and ’90s. It focuses on Ryan’s development of the “pizza box” modem, which revolutionized internet access by offering faster speeds at half the price of competitors. This innovation allowed struggling internet service providers to stay afloat and ultimately led to Ascend’s meteoric rise in the tech industry, culminating in its sale to Lucent Technologies for $24 billion in 1999.

While the Battlefield series lost its charm with its 2021 release, that doesn’t mean players have forgotten what it gave to the military shooter genre. One of the series spin-offs, Bad Company, gained a cult following after the release and it still feels like the franchise should’ve been concluded as a trilogy.
Maybe that’s why the conversations for it are still alive, as some fans were recently seen debating and going nostalgic over the spin-off. The first game was released in 2008 that also made use of the studio-developed engine Frostbite. It gave a new definition to destructible environments.

To date, there are 24 distinguished individuals (living and deceased) who have won competitive Oscar, Emmy and Tony Awards. The Triple Crown of Acting, as it’s known — see the list below. And there’s no horsing around.
Glenda Jackson became the most recent person to join the club when she received the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play in for “Three Tall Women” in 2018.
While the recent 77th Tony Awards didn’t produce another Triple Crown Acting champion (there was no Tony-less Oscar and Emmy winner in contention), it is possible that some unsuspecting thespian was put on course to becoming the 25th name on the list above. And so the awards plot thickens.

I’ll appropriately start with Sarah Paulson, who accepted the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for “Appropriate.” (It marked her first Tony nomination.

Every summer, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invites a deluge of new members to join its ranks. Since #OscarsSoWhite back in 2015, the Academy has moved away from its elitist tendencies and toward embracing younger and more diverse artists and executives from all over the world. This year’s invited class is no exception.
If the invitees all accept Academy membership, the total members will number 10,910 and voting members 9,934. And with the addition of the 2024 members, 35 percent of Academy members identify as women, 20 percent of Academy members are from underrepresented ethnic and racial communities, and 20 percent of Academy members are from countries or territories outside the U.S.
As usual, a slew of Oscar nominees and winners are gaining admittance to the club (71 Oscar nominees and 19 winners), including actors Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Sandra Hüller, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”), costume designer Holly Waddington...

Chris Pratt became a star almost by accident. After early acting jobs on such TV series as “Everwood” and “The O.C.,” Pratt was booked to guest on a short six-episode arc on a new NBC sitcom, “Parks and Recreation.” When the six episodes aired, however, the unexpected happened. From just that brief time, Andy Dwyer, his goofball of a character, became an immediate fan favorite, and the show’s producers wasted little time in inviting Pratt to return as a series regular for the second season. As the show’s acclaim grew, so did the cheers for Pratt, resulting in his first Critics Choice nomination.
From there, films beckoned as Pratt was cast in key supporting roles in a number of Best Picture nominees, including “Her,” “Moneyball” and “Zero Dark Thirty.” 2014, however, proved to be Pratt’s breakout year, as he moved up to starring roles in a pair of...

Things seem to be moving pretty quickly on her new film, following the scrapping of Kathryn Bigelow’s previous Netflix project.
After a protracted period of development, it was with some dismay that we learned back in April that Netflix wouldn’t be moving forward with Kathryn Bigelow’s planned film Aurora. As you likely know, there’s been a change in leadership at the streaming platform’s film division and Bigelow’s project – her first since 2017’s Detroit – was deemed as no longer suitable due to budgetary reasons.
On the bright side though, Netflix quickly announced that the Point Break and Zero Dark Thirty filmmaker would be directing a different project with it, and thankfully, things seem to be running much more smoothly this time.

Katheryn Bigelow will be getting back in the director’s chair for the first time since 2017’s historical drama Detroit. Bigelow was known for some beloved titles in the 90s, including Point Break and a movie that we’ve featured on a video about films that are hard to find — Strange Days. Bigelow reached new success when she directed The Hurt Locker in 2008, which would go on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. She would then follow that film up with Zero Dark Thirty. Deadline reports that not only is Bigelow directing a new film for Netflix, but she may lock down two stars for her film with Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson.

Jessica Chastain always manages to turn heads with her fashion choices. I find her style bold and daring; for me, she’s a total red carpet icon. She constantly impresses me with her ability to pull off unique looks that perfectly flatter her figure.
That said, I am not as blown away by her latest outfit. It isn’t a bad look by any means. Her look is polished and chic. However, it doesn’t quite have the same wow factor I’m used to seeing from her.

With business partner Monika Skerbelis, Edwards also co-wrote the books The Complete Filmmaker’s Guide to Festivals: Your All Access Pass to Launching Your Film on the Festival Circuit and I Liked It, Didn’t Love It: Screenplay Development from the Inside Out, currently in its 3rd edition. Memorial Day is meant to honour the valiant deeds of the departed troops who gave us the freedom we enjoy today. Apart from engaging in suitable Memorial Day celebrations, viewing movies with military or combat themes might serve as a solemn reminder of the real significance of the occasion.

A handful of them touch on other topics, like romance, friendship, and, of course, American life, but the majority are dramas or biopics.

Kathryn Bigelow was set to direct Aurora for Netflix, but that film got scrapped: now, though, she’s got another one.
Since Dan Lin was appointed as Netflix’s new film boss, we’ve all been waiting to see what kind of movies would be getting the green light at the Silicon Valley streaming outfit.
As of today, we have the very beginnings of an answer. Along with Happy Gilmore 2 – a sequel to Adam Sandler’s beloved 1996 comedy – it has also been announced that Kathryn Bigelow will be directing an as yet untitled thriller for the company.
Not much in the way of news has been released about the project but thanks to The Hollywood Reporter we do know this: the film will be focused ‘on a group of White House officials scrambling to deal with an incoming missile attack on the U.S. Sources say the story will...

Netflix has teamed up with Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow for a harrowing ticking-clock thriller.
The streamer has greenlit a film centered on a group of White House officials scrambling to deal with an incoming missile attack on the U.S.
Sources say the story will be told in real time and that its tone harkens back to Bigelow’s foreboding 2012 hit Zero Dark Thirty, which chronicled the hunt for Osama bin Laden and the Navy Seal mission to kill the terror leader.
Netflix wouldn’t confirm any details about the project, merely announcing an untitled Bigalow movie at their upfront presentation to advertisers in New York City on Wednesday.
The film — along with a Happy Gilmore sequel announced today — is the first movie greenlit by the streamer’s new film division head Dan Lin. However, the film’s development began during the division’s previous regime led by Scott Stuber,...
