In the early 2000s, Jennifer Aniston might have had her heart crushed by the budding romance between her now ex-husband Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie. However, the Friends star was not the only one who felt betrayed when they teamed up for their first-ever project together, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. In fact, while the 55-year-old might have been hit hardest by it, the film managed to ruffle a few more feathers.

After all, the film had everyone glued to their screens but did not portray one major part of it correctly. In fact, with Jolie and Pitt’s characters meeting for the very first time in Bogotá, Columbia, there seemed to be a few things that were missing.

For her fifth feature as director, Angelina Jolie has gone so far back to basics that Without Blood could quite easily be her debut. That isn’t a criticism, rather an observation about how hard it is, even for A-list talent, to make films about the brutality of war, even though many are raging all around us and, by displacing people in their thousands, feeding the anti-immigrant sentiment currently creeping up all around the world. But even after tackling conflicts in Bosnia, Cambodia, and even the Second World War, adapting Alessandro Baricco’s 2002 short story of the same name is a bold gambit; it’s a deliberately ambiguous two-hander that will have viewers wondering if they’ve missed a title card or two. What year is this? And where in the world are we?

Both being at the zenith of their careers, their marriage was the subject of adoration and envy. However, the fairy-tale narrative took a dramatic turn when the couple announced their separation in 2005.

Toronto – Perhaps it’s the subject matter she has gravitated to or the glare of the global spotlight, but it is embarassing how little respect Angelina Jolie has received as a filmmaker. Three of her first four narrative films as a director, “Unbroken,” “In The Land of Honey,” and “First They Killed My Father,” have demonstrated considerable cinematic skills. And, yet, when female directors are touted or pitched for projects you never hear her name.

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) celebrated some of the most talented figures in film and entertainment at this year’s Tribute Awards. The star-studded event, held annually at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, serves as both a gala dinner fundraiser for TIFF’s philanthropic efforts and a potential precursor for future award-season contenders.
Among the evening’s honorees were acclaimed actors Angelina Jolie and Jharrel Jerome, alongside directing legends David Cronenberg and Mike Leigh. Presenters included Julie Delpy, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Franklin Leonard and Sandra Oh (who served as honorary chair for this year’s edition).
Here are some of the highlights of the evening.

A woman (Salma Hayek Pinault) walks into a plaza sparsely occupied by patrons enjoying an afternoon coffee and a magazine and lottery ticket kiosk. She approaches the booth and fingers a stack of newspapers before asking the attendant (Demián Bichir), an older man with rounded shoulders and reading glasses perched on his nose, a question. Her delivery is studied, as if a more natural cadence battles against an inherent severity. She begs the man to close up the shop and have a drink with her. Her mannered sweetness becomes more urgent with his refusal. This is a command, not a request.
Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, Without Blood is Angelina Jolie’s latest foray into directing. The actress, who is making waves this festival season with her performance in Pablo Larrain’s Maria, adapted this thinly plotted parable from the novella of the same name by the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco.

In receiving the TIFF Tribute Award in Impact Media tonight, Oscar and Tony winner Angelina Jolie exclaimed that “When I am asked how I feel about the state of the world today, I admit I feel sick.”
She added, “After pushing for basic human rights for all people, only to see the reality worsen for so many, I feel a part of the failure of the system.”
However, Jolie always seeks to make a difference in showing the resilience of humanity. “A lot of Jolie’s films are about the long impact of war,” said TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey tonight at the world premiere of her sixth directorial Without Blood. As I sat through the North American premiere of Pablo Larraín’s biopic of Maria Callas at the Telluride Film Festival, which stars Angelina Jolie as the famed opera singer, I couldn’t help but recall a line from Al Pacino in “The Godfather Part III” (1990): “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!”
It’s been an awfully long time since Jolie was contending for a statuette — her last acting nomination was for 2008’s “Changeling” and she’s spent the time since then starring in popcorn movies like “Salt” and “Maleficent” or directing films like “Unbroken.” But if you needed a reminder of what a formidable acting talent Jolie is, it’s on display in her transformative portrayal of one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. It’s a chameleonic turn that can best be described as a a kind of cinematic possession.

Exclusive: After landing the villain role in Ryan Coogler’s next project, Jack O’Connell continues to fill out his dance card. Sources tell Deadline that he is set to join the cast of 28 Years Later, a sequel to 2002’s 28 Days Later. Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes also star in the pic, which is part of a planned trilogy.
Danny Boyle is directing the first movie from a script by Alex Garland. Sony will release the film in theaters globally.
While plot details are vague, the original 28 Days Later, directed by Boyle, written by Garland and released in 2002, centered on a bicycle courier (played by Cillian Murphy) who wakes from a coma to discover the world had been overrun with zombies following the outbreak of a virus. The pic grossed more than $82 million worldwide and led to the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, on which Boyle and Garland served solely as EPs.

Whenever novels are created into live-action series or movies, a large part of the fandom is left disappointed as the live-actions are not always very close to the original source material. Developer Mgp Studios (creators of the Hotline Miami-esque Project Downfall) has dipped their toes into Tarantino territory with their upcoming grindhouse Fps game, Unbroken. That means over the top “visceral bursts of violence” with a kick that turns inanimate objects into projectiles, coupled with the always-welcome Bullet Time mechanics.
Unbroken takes place in the realm of Crests Edge. You are a nameless stranger on a quest for revenge against a man known as Nielsen. In “Back to Black,” Jack O’Connell’s Blake Fielder-Civil comes into the life of Amy Winehouse — played by an exceptional Marisa Abela — with seductive bravado, sweeping the singer off her feet on their first meeting in a London pub thanks to, among other things, a lip-synced rendition of the Shangri-La’s “Leader of the Pack”.
As the divisive biopic, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and released in the U.K. by StudioCanal this Friday (and in the U.S. by Focus Features on May 17), agonizingly portrays, the smitten pair quickly descend into violent self-destruction — a “toxic co-dependency” as Fielder-Civil later describes it in the film — fueled by alcoholism and drug abuse.
Many may question the ethics of picking at a tragic story that was heavily chronicled and sensationalized by the media in real-time during Winehouse’s final years. But for anyone who’s been tracking O’Connell’s career, the opportunity to...

Hailee Steinfeld is no stranger to the supernatural, having voiced Gwen Stacy in the immensely popular animated Spider-Man movies — Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse — and fighting alongside Transformers in the spin-off prequel Bumblebee. She also was teased to return to the MCU in the post-credits scene of The Marvels. Now, the actress is set to star in Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s secret genre project. Earlier, it was reported that Jack O’Connell of Unbroken is in talks to play the villain. Delroy Lindo is also attached and there’s said to be “a musical element” to his character. Recently, Loki‘s Wunmi Mosaku was also reported to have joined the project.

Jack O’Connell may be about to be seen on screen in the Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black,” but the actor has also stepped behind the camera to shoot a video for another U.K. music icon, Paul Weller.
The Brit — who stars as Winehouse’s ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s feature alongside Marisa Abela as the late, legendary singer — has made his directorial debut with the music video for “Nothing,” a track set to be part of Weller’s new album “66,” releasing in May.
“It was a good stroke of fortune,” O’Connell tells Variety. “Paul’s been a mate for a while and he’s got a bunch of new music coming out. He asked me to be in [a video] and I said, ‘Can I direct it instead?’ He obliged. And now we’ve edited it and cut it together.”

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt used to be one of the most popular celebrity couples throughout their relationship. However, things took a turn for the worse in September 2016 when the 12-year relationship ended.
Even after years of separation, the ex-couple keeps making headlines now and then. Much like their relationship and subsequent marriage and divorce, their legal battle regarding a winery that they formerly owned together has also been covered by worldwide media. In a new legal filing obtained recently, some shocking claims have been made about Pitt.

While we wait to see if that Lindo will still be in that vampire hunter movie when it finally goes into production, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Lindo has been cast in the mysterious genre project that’s coming our way from frequent collaborators Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan – who have worked on Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever together as director and cast member, and have other collaborations that Coogler didn’t direct. Exclusive: Jack O’Connell (Ferrari) is in talks to star opposite Michael B. Jordan in Ryan Coogler’s untitled event film for Warner Bros, sources tell Deadline.
While both the plot of the film and O’Connell’s role remain under wraps, we’re told it’s a period genre pic in which he’ll be playing the villain. Deadline was first to tell you about Warners’ acquisition of the project, following a heated bidding war.
The film brings Jordan and Coogler together following their collaboration on the Creed and Black Panther franchises, having first worked together on the acclaimed Sundance pic Fruitvale Station. It’s also the second project from the collaborators that Warner Bros Film Group co-chairs and CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy have championed, after greenlighting the box office hit Creed III during their time at MGM.
Coogler is writing and will also produce alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian.

What’s a film without distribution? The Popcorn List sets out to make sure that doesn’t happen to the best indies.
Founded by Lela Meadow-Conner and Barbara Twist, the inaugural annual survey spotlights 20 features that debuted at major or regional film festivals this past year and come highly recommended by festival programmers. Nineteen out of the 20 movies have reviews on Letterboxd, despite not yet having theatrical or digital distribution in the U.S. All 20 have won awards — including Audience Awards and Jury Awards — at festivals like Sundance and SXSW.
Billed as being The Black List for undistributed films, the 2024 Popcorn List highlights independent films that are currently still without domestic U.S. distribution, like the documentary “Chasing Chasing Amy” about the making of Kevin Smith’s comedy.
The other 18 are: “Ajoomma,” “American Pot Story: Oaksterdam,” “Art for Everybody,” “Asog,” “Blood Sweat & Beers,” “Caterpillar,” “Citizen Sleuth,” “City of Wind,” “Crows Are White,...

Up next from Wyrmwood writer/director Kiah Roache-Turner is a shark attack survival movie titled Beast of War, and Variety brings news that the shark horror movie has been acquired for distribution by Signature Entertainment for the U.K. and Ireland, and Well Go USA for North America.
The period Wii film is loosely based on real-life events.
Beast of War “follows a warship carrying hundreds of Australian soldiers across the Timor Sea to the frontline of WWII. Suddenly, Japanese fighter jets scream out of the sky, and within minutes the ocean becomes a hell of steel, fire, oil and blood. While a handful of soldiers build a makeshift raft from floating debris as they cling to their lives, their biggest battle is yet to come. In the dark below, the ultimate apex predator — a great white shark — hunts in the wreckage and is drawn to the smell of fresh blood in the water.

It’s the surprise Oscars snub that many of us saw coming. Greta Gerwig missed out on a Best Director nomination for “Barbie,” even as the film scored an impressive eight nominations: picture, adapted screenplay, supporting actor (Ryan Gosling), supporting actress (America Ferrera), costume design, song (“I’m Just Ken”), song (“What Was I Made For”) and production design.
So how did Gerwig stumble? Let’s look at the five most likely reasons.
1. “Barbie” had absolutely zero snob appeal.
The Directors Branch of the academy is notoriously highbrow, and its members like to salute what they are feel are genuine, original and unique achievements in the field of film directing. They don’t care about celebrity status or box office. Gerwig was previously cited by the branch for 2017’s “Lady Bird.” She beat out the likes of Martin McDonagh for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and Steven Spielberg for “The Post.

If there’s one thing apes are afraid of besides drowning, it’s George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa. To avoid conflict at the box office during Memorial Day weekend, 20th Century Studios‘ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is moving to May 10 to avoid Furiosa’s wrath. The personal stories of the seven Weber siblings are shared in Beth Lane’s gripping and hopeful UnBroken
Beth Lane, in the two intertwining strands of her gripping and hopeful documentary, UnBroken (co-written with Aaron Soffin and a highlight of the 14th edition of Doc NYC), introduces us to her mother and surviving aunts, and travels to Germany to trace the incredible journey of her ancestors. “There is no rational explanation for miracles” wrote the director’s late Uncle Alfons about his arrival, together with his six sisters in the United States from post-war Germany. They are to this day the only seven Jewish siblings known to have together survived the Holocaust.

The Maze Runner trilogy director Wes Ball’s addition to the Planet of the Apes franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is set to reach theatres on May 24, 2024 – and in an interview with Empire magazine, Ball revealed that he has drawn inspiration from the likes of Star Wars and Apocalypto when putting together his Apes movie.
According to Empire, Ball is making Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes “an adventure movie, tonally distinct from the darker impulses of the recent Apes trilogy, while hoping to retain what made those films so special.” The director said, “When I first started on it, I said, ‘I feel like Apes needs a little bit of Star Wars’. It’s all still very grounded in reality, but it is essentially a quest narrative. Our main character – the young, impressionable Noa [Owen Teague] – meets characters along the way and becomes awakened as...
