Hulu is giving Shark Week a run for its money this July with not one but seven National Geographic specials dropping on the streaming service at the start of the month. From Shark Beach with Anthony Mackie to Baby Sharks in the City, there are plenty of options for fans of these fearsome finned creatures.
Hulu also has a couple of fun offerings for adult animation fans with the full second season of Marvel’s Hit Monkey dropping on July 15 and Futurama returning for its 12th season on July 29th.
There’s not really anything notable in the way of original movies on Hulu this month, but Aliens, Step Brothers, and (500) Days of Summer are just a few of the noteworthy movies joining the library.
Here’s everything that’s coming to (and leaving) Hulu in July.

Being one of the main stars of the 1980’s, famous for her romantic flicks The Blue Lagoon (1980) and Endless Love (1981), Brooke Shields has recently been celebrated by the audience again, as her romcom is now #1 in Netflix’s Global Chart. Even though it’s panned by critics, it can be a perfect guilty pleasure movie for an evening chill.
Its plot centers on Shields’ Lana, whose daughter surprises her with an unexpected news: she’s getting married. The thing is that the wedding is scheduled not only in a month, but at a resort in Phuket, Thailand. However, it’s not the end of Lana’s shock.
After arriving there for the ceremony, she meets her daughter’s groom and his father, who is none other than Lana’s ex who broke her heart long ago. Together they’ll need to organize the wedding and not destroy the children’s relationship with their past.

Max’s first full month without ‘HBO’ in its rebranded title has a selection that kicks off summer 2023 in fine fashion. Three of the four iterations of “A Star Is Born,” including the most recent remake starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, are streaming on Max in June. The 1954 and 1976 films land June 1, while the 2018 version arrives June 8.
To prepare for Margot Robbie’s performance in “Barbie” come July, one could watch one of her more intense roles as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya” (2017). For some lighter summer watches, viewers might consider “Dolphin Tale” (2010), “Grease” (1978), “Hairspray” (2007) or “Tooth Fairy” (2010).
“Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023) starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek Pinault lands at Max after its theatrical release in February this year. Another major theatrical release from 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022), swims onto the streamer starting June 7.

HBO Max is no more. In its place are…HBO and Max. Warner Bros. So here is everything you can expect to find on Max (including every new HBO show) this month.
Even though June 2023 is the first full month of Max’s existence without the helpful “HBO” modifier in front of it, literally all of its major original offerings are thanks to the pay cable network. June 4 sees the premiere of The Idol, the controversial TV project starring The Weeknd and written by Euphoria‘s Sam Levinson. Michael Jacobs’ romantic comedy attempts to present a universal portrait of the difficulties faced by couples young and old, those just starting out and those married for many years. So it’s ironic that Maybe I Do, which features such stellar screen veterans as Diane Keaton, Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon and William H. Macy plus relative youngsters Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey, has exactly the opposite effect. Instead of relating to the characters onscreen, you marvel at how they all look so good. The dominant message isn’t that all couples have issues, but rather that movie stars age so much better than the rest of us.
Adding to the dissonance is that the film represents reunions for many of the cast members — and that we’ve seen them together before, most of the time in much better films. Gere and Sarandon have played married couples in Shall We Dance...

It's taken 13 years to get to this point, and just as we arrived, the rug is getting ripped out from under us.
Good Witch Season 7 Episode 9 addressed the elephant in the room with stunning clarity. It was said out loud. There wasn't any hiding from it.
The Merriwicks are witches.
Not only have we finally uttered the word but it was done many times on an episode that found our beloved trio of charmed ones discovering new powers as the red-haloed moon threatened to strip them of all of their powers.
Of the three Merriwicks, Cassie has been having the most difficult time with current events.
Instead of being fearful of what might happen should the red-haloed moon achieve its goals, she's welcoming a time when she doesn't shoulder the responsibility of powers she didn't request.
Her feelings come from several places. She doesn't know who she is without magic,...

“There is no theme. Film whatever you want, however you want, with whomever you want.” This is the message that Egyptian filmmaker Sam Abbas sent to his favorite cinematographers as an invitation to contribute to the new film Erēmīta (Anthologies). Directors of photography from five countries––USA, France, Argentina, Italy, and the UK––answered the call and today we’re pleased to debut the exclusive trailer for the anthology project.
Featuring contributions from Abbas (Alia’s Birth, Marie, The Wedding), Alexis Zabe (The Florida Project, Silent Light, Post Tenebras Lux), Antoine Héberlé (A Son, My Favourite Fabric, GriGris), Ashley Connor (Madeline’s Madeline, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, The Death of Dick Long), Soledad Rodríguez (Pendular, Maternal, The Student), Stefano Falivene (Siberia, Pasolini, Mary), the zero-budget production will now get a release next month on VOD and Virtual Cinemas with all profits going entirely to a charity the team will choose.

Chicago – When we last talked to Melinda Hill, it was for her stand-up comedy special “Inappropriate.” It also turns out that she acts in a new film, the ensemble comedy “Love, Weddings & Other Disasters,” directed by Dennis Dugan and featuring Diane Keaton, Jeremy Irons, and Maggie Grace, among others.
An impending wedding is the backdrop for the film, as it weaves multiple storylines regarding the search for love by a colorful group of characters. They include an inexperienced wedding planner nicknamed “The Wedding Trasher” (Maggie Grace), a fussy celebrity caterer (Jeremy Irons) going on a “blind date” (Diane Keaton) and a Russian exotic dancer (Melinda Hill) participating in a reality show that literally chains her to Jimmy (Andy Goldenberg). It all comes together, connecting the love encounters and the nuptials. The film also features Andrew Bachelor, Jesse McCartney and director Dennis Dugan talking on a role.

Since it was launched as a joint production venture between Finland, Estonia and Latvia, the North Star Film Alliance has labored to lure international film production to this scenic corner of Northeast Europe, which is enjoying a star turn after the Estonian shoot of Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet.”
This year the alliance redoubled its efforts by opening offices in the heart of Hollywood, hoping to sell studio execs on what the region has to offer. “Hollywood is always open to new ideas, new looks, new ways to tell stories in the most original ways,” says Eleonora Granata, who heads the group’s L.A. office.
The former VP of acquisitions at Turner Pictures says the Hollywood launch, as well as the unveiling of new offices in Tokyo, will help “to prepare the ground [and] really plant the seed of what these places are offering.”

Egyptian filmmaker Sam Abbas made a splash when he released his queer-themed movie “The Wedding” in secret locations across the Middle East via his Egypt-based ArabQ shingle. The director is now starting a new company in Paris.
Abbas, who is Egypt-born and until recently lived in New York, drew some media attention in 2018 with “The Wedding,” which he wrote, directed and starred in as a young closeted Muslim man from Brooklyn who, while planning to marry his American girlfriend — played by Canada’s Nikohl Boosheri — is having affairs with other men.
“The Wedding” played in secret speakeasy-type venues by invitation only in Turkey, Lebanon, Tunisia and Egypt via ArabQ, Abbas claimed, which helped prompt some publicity when the film briefly screened in New York to unenthusiastic reviews. Variety’s Jay Weissberg called “The Wedding” “a dull slice of Lower Manhattan mumblecore.”

The following contains spoilers for The Haunting of Bly Manor.
While many have pointed out that The Haunting of Bly Manor is not quite as scary as its predecessor, it certainly has a more satisfying conclusion. The Haunting of Hill House seemed to lose its nerve in the final hour, delivering an ending that was too saccharine and unearned. On the flipside, Bly Manor concludes its story in heart wrenching, then bitter sweet fashion, revealing the identity of the series’ mysterious narrator, detailing the fates of the 1987-set characters, and expelling the spirits of the titular manor.
Here is what really happens at the end of The Haunting of Bly Manor.
The Romance of Certain Old Clothes

Turkey’s 57th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival is forging ahead with a hybrid edition this year that will feature a mix of the best new Turkish features and cherry-picked international titles.
The storied event being held Oct. 3-10 in the bustling resort city on Turkey’s Southern coast has been through a spell of politically-prompted turbulence that led to the appointment last year of new fest chief Ahmet Boyacıoğlu and artistic director Başak Emre, who both stated that “Return to Roots” would be their mantra as they took the helm.
That’s because the 2017 and 2018 editions, headed by British-Irish producer Mike Downey, had done away with the national competition, historically the backbone of Turkey’s oldest and most prominent film event.
Therefore lots of locals during those two years “boycotted the festival” since Turkish cinema, which had been folded into the international lineup, “was practically out,” says Boyacıoğlu, who...

Callin and Brendan Paulhus are driving toward an inferno. It’s mid-September 2020; Los Angeles County has 474 new reported cases of Covid-19, the city is experiencing some of the worst air quality and pollution in the world, and five million acres across the West Coast are scorched due to forest fires. The Paulhus brothers knew all this, and still decided to pack up Bren’s 2016 Toyota Sonata on a Monday, put money down on a four-month lease, and make the cross-country drive from their family’s home in Massachusetts. They have 29 hours left until their destination.

Disney and Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War will dominate yet again this weekend, and while it's unlikely it will have much of a shot at the largest second weekend ever, a shot at the second largest is well within reach as it pushes toward $450 million domestic and over $1 billion worldwide. In terms of new releases, there isn't anything hitting theaters that should cause the superhero film to lose audience, though look for Pantelion's Overboard remake to score a solid debut while Tully and Bad Samaritan should deliver openings in the low-to-mid single digits. Following Infinity War's $257.7 million debut, looking at the five previous $200+ million openers, the second weekend drops range from 39.8% for The Force Awakens to 67.5% for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In between, Black Panther dipped 44.7%, Jurassic World dropped 49% and The Avengers fell 50.3% in their sophomore sessions. To compare all six films side-by-side is difficult given the two...

10 “The Whirligig,” by Hamish Linklater, at Off Broadway’s New Group. Who’s to blame for a young woman’s impending death from drug addiction? Bigger question: who talked such talented actors (Norbert Leo Butz, Zosia Mamet, Dolly Wells) into performing this script? 9 “Amelie,” by Craig Lucas, Daniel Messe and Nathan Tysen, on Broadway. The movie’s whimsical heroine turns into an insufferable annoyance on stage. 8 “Gently Down the Stream,” by Martin Sherman, at Off Broadway’s Public Theater. An old gay man (Harvey Fierstein) not only talks and talks about every atrocity suffered by the Lgbt community. He has somehow been witness.

With the big end of the year holidays still a couple of weeks away, what kind of big event can gather a big family (or a diverse acting ensemble)? It’s gotta’ be a comedy so a funeral is probably out of the question, although both the British and Us versions of Death At A Funeral are pretty darned hilarious. No, there’s got to be a romantic angle, so the setting should probably be a wedding. Film makers have used them for lots of comedies that are ripe with conflict from all the versions of Father Of The Bride to those big cast showcases like Robert Altman’s A Wedding and the big, big superstar-studded , appropriately named The Big Wedding just three years ago. And like that flick, some of the exes are involved, upping the tension and making for The Wilde Wedding that lives up to its name...

Welcome to this week’s “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide release movies. The Fate of the Furious made history last weekend as it captured the biggest worldwide opening ever with a staggering $532 million. The film somewhat disappointed stateside with $98.8 million, but Universal is undoubtedly pleased with the worldwide result. Many studios saw this coming and decided to stay away from the Furious wake. As a result, we have a pretty slow week of moderate openers including Born in China, The Promise, and Unforgettable.

What we are excited about: Although not quite a yearly tradition, DisneyNature has released six nature documentaries over the Earth Day weekend since 2009. This year will bring us Born in China, which looks to be just what we have come to expect from the series. It looks to boast beautiful shots of cute animals and narrated by John Krasinski.

We've already seen some strong performances at the box office this year all of which have contributed to the yearly domestic box office topping $3 billion in ticket sales faster than it ever has before. Last weekend, The Boss Baby became the fifth release of 2017 to top $50 million at the weekend box office and while this weekend won't see similar returns for the week's new wide releases, it's the relative calm before the storm as Universal's The Fate of the Furious debuts next weekend, sure to become the year's second $100+ million opener. As for this weekend, the top twelve may struggle to reach $120 million collectively as both Smurfs: The Lost Village and Going in Style are looking at relatively soft openings while Pure Flix's The Case for Christ should find a spot in the lower half of the weekend top ten. At the top of the box office it's looking like...

Nearly 35 years ago DeNiro truly stunned film fans (yes, he could do that back then) when they learned of his next big screen collaboration with Martin Scorsese. It was crazy enough that the duo would follow the brutal one-two punch of Mean Streets and Taxi Driver with a glossy homage to big splashy MGM-style movie musicals, New York, New York, but this? They seemed to be back in their comfort zone with the classic Raging Bull, when they made another big detour. A look at comedy, namely a portrait of a failed stand-up comic (he’d be dubbed a “hack” today) named Rupert Pupkin. 1982’s The King Of Comedy even co-starred the iconic Jerry Lewis, who often claimed that royal title. The film was then considered a box office flop, but the years have been most kind to it (in stand-up parlance, maybe it was “too hip for the room”). Now,...
