SonyLIV scored an International Emmy nomination for “Rocket Boys,” for lead actor Jim Sarbh. Netflix won the International Emmy for comedy for “Vir Das: Landing” and “The Railway Men” cracked the streamer’s global non-English TV top 3 in addition to topping the South Asian chart. Locally, Netflix dominated the Filmfare streaming awards with 26 wins including prizes for “Trial by Fire,” “Kohrra” and “Scoop.”

Sultan Of Delhi (Disney+Hotstar; 9 Episodes)
Starring Tahir Raj Bhasin, Mouni Roy, Anjum Sharma, Vinay Pathak, Anupriya Goenka, Nishant Dahiya, Mehreen Pirzada , Harleen Sethi
Directed by Milan Luthria, Suparn Verma
Once upon a time, Milan Luthria directed a film about gangsters called Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai. Not that it was any great shakes. But compared to Luthria’s new homage to gangsterism, it was a masterpiece.
The new monsterpiece stretching into nine episodes should have never been made. It is hideously bad in plotting and woefully inadequate in execution. The sets are tacky: a refugee camp in the opening episode looks like a college canteen.
Dull and cheesy, it establishes an immediate yawn sumbandh with the audience, provided there is an audience for these tales glorifying gangsters and sociopaths who should ideally be placed in the trashcan of anonymity.

Dara Kadri must be one of the most complex characters written in Hindi cinema. Many watching Bambai Meri Jaan are cognizant of the real-life mafia don he is based on. The makers allow the audience to have a look at Dara Kadri as a man who was carried away by a life of crime after he saw Haji Maqbool flaunt his power and hold over the city. We were shaped by our surroundings while growing up, and it contributed to Dara Kadri becoming a terrifying gangster in the city.

Bambai Meri Jaan, the Bombay-based period drama, has an ensemble cast that does not disappoint from start to finish. One of the main reasons why most of these characters leave a lasting impression is the writing. The creators and the director of the show made sure the screenplay and the character graphs would always remain at the forefront. Some layered and complex writing allowed the audience to view these characters from a neutral perspective.
Haji Maqbool, whose real name was Sulaiman Maqbool, was renamed by the locals after a successful Hajj pilgrimage as Haji Maqbool. We get to hear Ismail’s voiceover throughout the season. It began with talking about Haji being an opulent gangster. He often threw parties for politicians and film stars. He was a big fan of glamor and glitz. It began with talking about Haji being an opulent gangster. He often threw parties for politicians and film stars. He was a big fan of glamor and glitz. He was also known to be acquainted with actors and actresses who were popular at that time.

Bambai Meri Jaan is creating waves by showcasing stories that may be familiar to many of us. What makes this ten-episode-long show different from the usual fare we have watched on this subject over the years is the treatment of the story and the screenplay. This story is extensively covered in pieces of media like books, case studies, and articles. There are plenty of Hindi films as well that were either successful in being accurate portrayals of that era or they were just over-the-top dramatization, which in most cases did not give the audience the right picture to understand the nexus and the leaders.
Bambai Meri Jaan is based on the bestselling book ‘Dongri to Dubai’ written by India’s top investigative journalist S. Hussain Zaidi. ‘Dongri to Dubai’ has been the source material for many movies made in the gangster drama genre. What makes them less engaging than Shujaat Saudagar...

Bambai Meri Jaan, a brand-new Prime Video India original, takes us to the underbelly of the city of Bombay. It is also about the young men who came up from nothing, became gangsters and eventually ruled the city. These gangsters were notorious for smuggling contraband and precious metals, supplying narcotics, and committing murders.
The show spans three decades and talks about how these gangsters eventually became a nuisance for the state government and its machinery. The central government raised issues concerning these men, and suggested arresting them. If not, the city will be put through chaos and anarchy. In comes Ismail Kadri, who is an officer with the Mumbai Police. The man is known for his integrity, honesty, and respect for the uniform. Apart from these characteristics, Ismail is serious about catching the men who work for these gangsters and bringing them to justice. He is one of the few...

The latest Prime Video original, Bambai Meri Jaan, is more than just a period drama. The show brings forward the tale of a dysfunctional family. Ismail Kadri and his children, throughout the ten episodes, have had different attitudes toward how life should be led. Ismail believed in being honest and put his self-respect above everything else. Dara Kadri and his siblings craved power and materialistic things. The first season of Bambai Meri Jaan chronicles the stories of several Mumbai-based gangsters and their rise to power. The highlight of the show is Dara Kadri becoming a powerful man in the city in a short period of time when gangsters like Haji, Pathan, and Anna were at the peak of their might.
The series takes the audience through the trajectory that led to a rivalry between Dara and Pathan’s gang. A bloodbath that killed many close to these gangsters eventually ceased...

Bambai Meri Jaan
Starring Kay Kay Menon, Avinash Tiwary, Kritika Kamra, Nivedita Bhattacharya, Amyra Dastur
Directed by Shujaat Saudagar
One thing about the enduring interest in lives of smugglers and gangsters: they provided a lot of employment to Mumbai’s population back in the 1960s, 70s and 80s when they were active; they continue to provide employment to actors and technicians who are part of these never-ending sanguinary sagas of nebulous loyalties and sticky alliances.
Bambai Meri Jaan based on S. Hussain Zaidi’s Dongri to Dubai: Six Decades of the Mumbai Mafia is a slowburn crime thriller with criminal characters trapped in a sordid system that fosters treachery. At a running time of almost ten hours, it gives us a lot of time to think for an answer to that ultimate crime conundrum: does crime pay? How much did Excel Entertainment make out of this deal. By the way?...

New Delhi, Sep 15 (Ians) Ambitious gangsters have worked their way up the ranks of the criminal underworld and go on to hit big time too. This is an over-familiar tale with nearly all offenders claiming a childhood that looked normal but some minor aberrations and later major ones, turned them into the most wanted category of lawbreakers.
Mumbai can’t seem to forgive or forget Dawood Ibrahim. With good reason too. The global terrorist is an Indian mob boss, drug lord, and terrorist from Dongri in Mumbai, who is wanted by the Government of India.
‘Bambai Meri Jaan’ is an action-packed period drama set in the 1960s, based on and a sneak peek into post-Independence Bombay and its streets riddled with crime. It is as much an honest cop’s journey as he attempts to protect his family.

Bambai Meri Jaan loosely translates to “Bombay, you are my life”. Mumbai, as we know, was called Bombay or Bambai several decades ago. As we have seen in several films, the Bombay underworld has been of great fascination to the Hindi film industry. There have been countless films particularly that have been modeled around gangsters and the glitz around them. Their stories have been told repeatedly, to the point that many of us are aware of what transpired when the mafia in Bombay was at its peak.
Bambai Meri Jaan takes us through the bitter rivalry between two factions of gangsters who want to control the city of Bombay through illegal businesses, power, and terror. The underlying theme of the show revolves around the dysfunctional dynamics between a father and his children. They struggle to understand each other’s ideologies yet somehow manage to live under one roof.

Netflix and leading Indian studio Yash Raj Films (Yrf) have set a multi-year creative partnership.
The two entities will “collaborate to create films and series to bring defining stories to audiences in India and across the world,” they said in a statement.
The partnership will kick off with four-part thriller series “The Railway Men,” a previously-announced tribute to the unsung heroes of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy. A cloud of toxic gas escaped from an American pesticide plant, in 1984, in the central Indian city of Bhopal. It killed and injured thousands of people. The protagonists of “The Railway Men” are workers at the Bhopal railway station who saved thousands of lives. It is the first production from Yrf Entertainment, the studio’s streaming production arm.
The cast is led by R. Madhavan (“Rocketry”), Kay Kay Menon (“Bambai Meri Jaan”), Divyenndu Sharma (“Mirzapur”), emerging talent Babil Khan (“Friday Night Plan”) and Sunny Hinduja...

One of the last reels of the series shows the protagonist passing through a dark tunnel into the light, metaphorically telling that there is light at the end of tunnel in terms of possibilities of curbing and dealing with the black money mafia. Kaala seems to be derived from the term ‘Kaala Paisa’ or ‘Black Money’. Earlier filmmakers dealt with the counterfeit notes mafia in ‘Farzi’, this time around Bejoy Nambiar’s ‘Kaala’ deals with ‘Hawala’ dealings. From the director who made thrillers like Shaitan, David & Wazir, Kaala adds to his exceptional storytelling repertoire and introduces us to the term ‘Reverse Hawala’ – converting white money into black and pumping huge stash of cash for illicit activities including terrorism.
Kaala is set against the backdrop of chaotic Kolkata, a riveting tale of love, loss, betrayal and irony. With young and ambitious Ib officer Ritwik Mukherjee (Avinash Tiwary) life seems like a series of random events,...

Television shows and movies in the period drama genre are tricky and expensive. Other than spending time on the narrative aspect, the makers must convince us with splendid world-building. The production, dialogue, and ambience add meaning to the story. Amazon Prime Video India has knocked it out of the park with yet another period drama this year. The streaming network gave us Jubilee in April 2023, and within a few months, they’d given us Bambai Meri Jaan. This gangster period drama was released on the platform on September 14, 2023. Based on S. Hussain Zaidi’s book Dongri to Dubai, the Prime Video follows a bitter rivalry between gangsters that eventually engulfs the city in violence and chaos.

Shujaat Saudagar, the director of the upcoming streaming period crime-drama ‘Bambai Meri Jaan’, has opened up on suffering major setbacks during the making of the series. The series hit the roadblock first in 2020 when the world at large was going through the testing times of the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Shujaat said: “Sulk karne se kuchh hota toh hai nahi, we are all grown ups, we got to do what we gotta do. We had many setbacks, the first of which we encountered during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Covid was something which was very new to the world back then, none of us knew about what was going to happen or what the future will be especially, during the first wave, there was uncertainty.”
He further mentioned that problems often trigger the sense of community within people and it’s something that helped them sail through during the difficult times.

The two have known each other for over 2 decades with both of them having worked in the advertisement industry. They share a very good equation to the point where Menon could gauge from his director’s eyes if the latter liked a certain take or not.

Prime Video’s upcoming crime thriller “Bambai Meri Jaan” tells an action-packed tale of good vs. evil in post-independence India — but at its core, the show is a story about family.
Premiering Sept. 14 on the streamer, the 10-episode series was created by Rensil D’Silva (“Dial 100”) and Shujaat Saudagar (“The Underbug”), based on a story by longtime crime journalist S. Hussain Zaidi. At the show’s global premiere in London on Tuesday night, the cast and crew — including D’Silva and Saudagar; Excel Media and Entertainment producers Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani and Kassim Jagmagia; stars Kritika Kamra and Avinash Tiwary; and Prime Video execs James Farrell and Aparna Purohit — spoke with Variety‘s Naman Ramachandran about bringing “Bambai Meri Jaan” to life.
“This family unit … really, really engages you beyond the bad guys vs. the good guys,” Akhtar said. “It really stays with you. It’s an emotional journey, you feel what the characters are feeling.

The actress’s character of Habiba makes for a good contrast in the show as she stands out as a bold and confident woman who breaks away from the stereotypical construct of a woman in such a setting, to make her voice heard with impact.
Sharing the dimensions of her part, Kritika said: “Habiba is a woman of many shades. She is stubborn like her father, courageous like Dara and is fiercely loyal like him. Actor Kay Kay Menon, who is a chameleon when it comes to getting into the skin of any character, said he plays people and not roles. Kay Kay is all set for the release of his next series ‘Bambai Meri Jaan’ in which he will be seen playing the role of an honest cop.
The trailer of the series was launched in Mumbai on Monday and it has been getting great response from everyone.
Kay Kay has earlier also played the role of a cop on screen.
When asked what difference will the audience get to see in his role this time, he said, “I play people on screen and not roles. No two people are the same in this world and there can be limited number of roles. For example one can play the role of a cop, professor, lawyer but each person is different. So I tend to play that person on screen.
