Netflix’s animated Tomb Raider series captures the essence of the popular gaming franchise and delivers an action-packed adventure that’s ripe with mysticism and monsters.
Netflix has made a big splash as a streaming service that caused major waves in the television and film industry. One area in which Netflix particularly excels is that they’ve become the number one home for animated video game adaptations. Netflix has developed a diverse roster of series between Castlevania, Onimusha, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Tekken: Bloodline, The Cuphead Show, and even more ambitious offerings like Arcane and Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix. An animated Tomb Raider series makes perfect sense for the streamer, but it’d also be very easy for Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft to get lost in the shuffle.

Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen recently earned a new milestone when the protagonist of the anime and manga series made a cameo in one of the biggest comic book franchises, DC Comics. Yuji Itadori surprised his fans as he sneaked into the DC world and got a feature in a crowd shot in the previews.
Yuji Itadori in Jujutsu Kaisen
As soon as fans found out about the feature, they instantly went on social media to talk about Yuji’s achievement and how Jujutsu Kaisen is making the rounds around the world. Not only fans, but even the voice actor of Gojo Satoru, Kaiji Tang, also took part in this banter and added a nice twist to the discourse.
Instead of appreciating Yuji’s success, Tang compared the two worlds and pointed out that the antagonist of the series, Sukuna, who is currently wreaking havoc in Jujutsu Kaisen, won’t...

Anime and manga fans will know what the Gundam series is in that world. This long-running franchise has spanned numerous anime, manga, and video games and is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable titles from the world of manga and anime. The series has been evolving over the years, reaching new heights and exploring new realms. In light of that fact, we are happy to announce that Netflix’s upcoming Gundam series, Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance, has received its first trailer and confirmed a Fall 2024 release date.
As officially described by the streaming service, Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance will be a completely new take on the franchise’s history, as you can see from the official description:
“Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance” is an all-new original animation composed of six 30-minute episodes focusing on the European front of the One Year War, which was the setting of the first Gundam series,...

This Cyberpunk: Edgerunners review contains no spoilers.
Netflix has received quite a bit of criticism in recent years for everything from its overwhelming release schedule to its liberal cancelation policy. One thing the streamer is doing that should receive nothing but praise, however, is its growing track record with video game to anime adaptations. Last month Netflix released Tekken: Bloodline to rave reviews from hardcore fighting game fans, and now it’s added to that resume with the impressive Cyberpunk 2077 spin-off, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
The best adaptations are able to be enjoyed by people who are already immersed in the source material, and those who are jumping headfirst into the world for the first time. As someone who hasn’t played the game this show is based off of, one of the first thoughts that entered my mind was how much it made me want to try out Cyberpunk 2077. I am...

The legacy of video game adaptations is a complex one, as most attempts to create standalone stories based on massively popular video games have failed on some fundamental level. Thankfully, there have been some exceptions in the recent past, which include Netflix's "Arcane" (based on "Arcane: League of Legends") and "Tekken: Bloodline" (based on the popular "Tekken" franchise). So, when CD Projekt Red announced a standalone anime series titled "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners," based on the mega-hyped "Cyberpunk 2077," fans of the open-world game were cautiously hopeful. Netflix dropped the series today, and I have good news for you: "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" brings the world of the game to life in the best of ways.
While fans of "Cyberpunk 2077" will rejoice at the anime's dedication to the game's in-world lore, aesthetics, and core concepts, those unfamiliar with the original source material might feel a little lost at first. What exactly does the protagonist,...

The latest animated version of “Tekken” the video game has hit Netflix this month, following the story of its third edition, in six episodes that definitely leave room for sequel(s).
The first of the six episodes shows Jin Kazama learning the Kazama Style Traditional Martial Arts from his mother Jun, in their secluded cabin in the woods. Despite some incidents here and there, the two of them live a peaceful life, with their relationship being quite good. However, for reasons unknown, an ancient demon, Ogre, appears in their house, ending up killing Jun who barely manages to save her son. The next two episodes revolve around the relationship between Jin and his grandfather, Heihachi Mishima, powerful martial artist and business mogul, who eventually agrees to train him after he mentions what happened with the Ogre. Heihachi proves a rather hard teacher, but through the years, Jin becomes a truly powerful fighter himself.

This Tekken: Bloodline review contains no spoilers.
Video games are hard to adapt to movie or television screens because the gameplay is the meat of the experience. When you disengage the player from the story, the writers have to ensure their filmmaking is top-notch to reimburse the fans for what they’ve lost in the process. This is why gaming continues to be a hit-or-miss translation. The more these shaky adaptations occur, the less confidence studios have to produce them.
The creative minds behind Tekken: Bloodline on Netflix understand how much the interactive nature of gaming factors into the love for the medium. When putting a famous fighting franchise onto a streaming platform, you have to figure out how you are going to engage the audience that misses button-mashing and figuring out how to defeat the opponent. It’s not as fun to watch fists fly as it is to make them soar yourself.

Just a few months ago, Netflix appeared to be on a very rough track. Then Stranger Things season 4 came around and led to a less-apocalyptic-than-expected Q2 earnings report for the streamer. With its new releases for August 2022, however, Netflix is going to have to find another hit to keep the good vibes rolling. Here are some of their best options.
Perhaps the biggest breakout candidate for Netflix this month is The Sandman on Aug. 5. Though Neil Gaiman’s classic comic has long been thought to be unadaptable, the folks behind 10-episode series are betting they’re the ones for the job. Get ready to meet Morpheus, the king of dreams and the ruler of The Dreaming.
