‘American Horror Stories’ delivers five uniquely alarming tales of terror that tackle liminal spaces, clones, Leprechauns, and more.
“You know, we invented hell.”
There was a lot of promise in American Horror Stories — an episodic anthology horror series — when it was first announced as a companion piece to American Horror Story proper. American Horror Stories’ first season was a lackluster effort that oddly felt compelled to needlessly connect its stories to American Horror Story. The second season worked out many of these kinks and, while still imperfect, there are some genuine gems in the mix, like the Twilight Zone-aping “Facelift.” The third season was an even greater improvement that arguably didn’t have any duds in the mix. More importantly, American Horror Stories seemed to finally find the right rhythm and creative team to do this series justice. Additionally, Season 3 eclipsed the modern seasons of American Horror Story and felt...

“AfrAId” is a Blumhouse horror movie starring John Cho and Katherine Waterston.
Blumhouse Productions leads us once more through the familiar corridors that have solidified its status as a powerhouse in the industry: films that often feature straightforward narratives, which may occasionally border on the predictable, yet consistently achieve commercial success. “AfrAId” doesn’t aspire to revolutionize the genre of science fiction, nor does it aim to astonish us with groundbreaking originality or innovative concepts. Picture a cross between Stanley Kubrick’s Hal and Amazon’s Alexa, and you have a fairly accurate idea of what to expect.
Predictable, perhaps, but undeniably engaging and backed by quality production.
Plot Summary
The story revolves around an employee at a prominent advertising agency who is tasked with testing a cutting-edge device at home: an AI reminiscent of Alexa, but significantly more advanced. This AI learns at an alarming rate, and it isn...

“Blink Twice” (Amazon MGM), actress Zoë Kravitz’s feature directorial debut with Channing Tatum as a tech billionaire who invites a cocktail waitress to his private island, was a modest performer in theaters last month. Its opening weekend only reached #4 at the box office, earning $7 million, with the full run amounting to $22 million.
Flash forward a few weeks, and it is #1 for its debut week in PVOD. It jumped to the top even as three other new releases (all weaker performers) also made at least one of the two top 10 lists below.
Netflix continues to find appeal for its recent originals, with four films in its top five. These though were trumped by “The Garfield Movie,” the latest Sony release to transition to the streamer four months after release. Jeff Zausch will be back. The Naked and Afraid star’s latest Last One Standing experience might not have played out how he expected, but he isn’t letting that disappointment dampen his spirit. Despite hinting in the Last One Standing Season 2 finale that he wouldn’t return for another season of the Discovery Channel reality show, Jeff now says he’s ready for another challenge.
Jeff Zausch fell short in the ‘Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing’ Season 2 finale
Jeff is a seasoned Naked and Afraid veteran who’s completed eight of the show’s legendary challenges (including two 60-day challenges). But Last One Standing proved to be the beast he couldn’t tame.
In Last One Standing Season 1, Jeff was eliminated in the final stage of the competition after he spent days trying – and failing – to start a friction fire. He returned for his “revenge tour” in season 2, but again fell short.

Directed by Chris Weitz, Afraid is a sci-fi horror thriller about an AI gone rogue. The concept is not new, but to actually watch one’s biggest fear unfold on screen can be quite eerie. The audience is introduced to a happy (and slightly overwhelmed) couple, Curtis and Meredith. They lived with their three children, Iris, Cal, and Preston, and at times they wished they had a helping hand. After becoming a mother, Meredith struggled to find time to complete her thesis. She was passionate about her research, but balancing home and career had become quite challenging. Curtis worked at a marketing company, and he loved his job. Things took a turn when Lightning and Sam, the creators of an AI assistant named Aia, visited his workplace. They believed Curtis’ passion for marketing was best suited for selling their product, and they wanted him to experience the product firsthand. Aia was delivered to Curtis’ house,...

Sony had been planning to give director Chris Weitz’s horror film They Listen a theatrical release on August 25th of 2023, but in May of last year they decided to delay the release an entire year, pushing They Listen to August 30, 2024. By the time that date rolled around, the movie had been given the new title Afraid (or AfrAId)… and neither the new title nor the new release date worked out for the movie at the box office, because it only ended up making $9 million at the global box office. Just two weeks after its theatrical release, Afraid has now been given a digital release and is available for rent on Amazon’s Prime Video for $9.99. It can also be purchased for the price of $14.99.
Afraid‘s physical media release will follow on November 5th, when it comes to Blu-ray and DVD with the following extras: – 5 Deleted & Extended Scenes including...

A remake of the Danish horror movie, Blumhouse and Universal released Speak No Evil in theaters over the weekend, and the news is good on both the critical and box office fronts.
Arriving in theaters with an 83% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, Speak No Evil debuted with $11.3 million in 3,375 theaters at the domestic box office over the weekend.
Worldwide, the film’s current total is $20,873,595.
The reported production budget for Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil is $15 million, so the film should have no problem turning a profit at the box office in the coming weeks.
For the sake of context, Speak No Evil‘s $11.3 million domestic debut is higher than the opening weekends for several of this year’s horror movies, including Abigail, Imaginary, The First Omen, Blink Twice, The Watchers, Tarot, AfrAId, and Lisa Frankenstein. It opened to nearly the same amount as Blumhouse’s Night Swim ($11.7m), which ended with $54 million.

If you're a horror fan, you're familiar with Blumhouse Productions (cited as Blumhouse from here out). Even if you're not a horror fan, you've probably watched a Blumhouse film without knowing it ("Whiplash?" "Jem and the Holograms?" "Tooth Fairy?"). Jason Blum's nightmare factory is synonymous with today's mainstream horror pillars, securing the rights to everything from "Halloween" to "The Exorcist" and beyond. Indeed, it's impossible to banter about our contemporary horror era without acknowledging how prevalent and prodigious Blumhouse has become — so why does it feel like it's ghosting us this year?
Blumhouse decimated last year's horror movie market. In 2023, Blum's juggernaut scared up nearly $800 million worldwide in box office totals. Emma Tammi's video game adaptation "Five Nights at Freddy's" boasted a high score of $297 million on a $20 million budget — one of nine films released by Blumhouse. Now, there's no metric for reporting for streaming titles like...

Three new movies were no match for the Ghost With the Most as “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” loomed large over domestic box office charts again.
Tim Burton’s spooky sequel added a stellar $51.6 million in its second weekend of release, bringing its tally to $188 million in North America and $264 million globally. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” hasn’t resonated as strongly at the international box office, where the Warner Bros. film has earned $76.3 million to date.
In terms of newcomers, “Speak No Evil,” Universal and Blumhouse’s remake of the 2022 Danish horror film, opened in second place with $11.5 million from 3,375 venues. Provocateur comedian Matt Walsh’s satire documentary “Am I Racist?” landed in fourth place with a decent $4.75 million from 1,517 theaters. The film, released by conservative pundit Ben Shapiro’s The Daily Wire, landed the top debut in 2024 for a doc. Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s “The Killer’s Game” with Dave Bautista failed to connect, debuting at No.

There used to be a very big difference when talking about independent horror and mainstream horror. The latter would often be much more tame, with a goal of maximizing the audience, therefore maximizing Box Office. Indie horror would often be darker, going for moments that would stick with you long after the credits roll. But as society has shifted into this different entertainment landscape, there’s more of a desire than ever for something wholly unique. Mostly in the sake of profit. Thinking outside of the box is rewarded as it’s all about grabbing attention. It’s why a film like Longlegs can come out and absolutely light the world on fire. Because filmmakers are being forced to take risks in an attempt to get people to the theaters. Audiences are tired of the same old, same old.
This has never been more evident than with the failures of Blumhouse’s 2024 lineup.

Netflix has released the trailer for its literary romance drama “Lonely Planet,” featuring an old-school-new-school paring of Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth.
According to the official logline, the film follows a novelist named Katherine (Dern), who in search of inspiration, books a trip to a writer’s retreat in Morocco. There, she meets “a young man (Hemsworth) whose acquaintanceship evolves into an intoxicating, life-altering love affair.”
Supporting cast members include Diana Silvers (“Space Force”), Ben Youcef (“Afraid”), Bellina Logan (“Palm Royale”), Gustav Dyekjær Giese (“The Quiet Ones”) and Dillon Lane (“The Guilty”).
While discussing the film with Netflix’s publication Tudum, Dern said what attracted her to “Lonely Planet” was “the exploration of identity and self-worth within relationships, especially in a world as intellectually charged as the literary scene.”

A new film sits atop the box-office weekend top ten as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice decimated the competition, claiming the crown by a margin of $102.8 million.
In its first weekend of release, the Warner Bros. product Beetlejuice Beetlejuice debuted in first place with $110.0 million over the course of its first few days in release. This was more than enough to push last weekend’s top film, Deadpool & Wolverine to second place where it earned $7.2 million in its seventh weekend of release, giving the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures offering an overall total of $614.0 million to date. Climbing one spot to finish in third this weekend was Reagan, which added $5.2 million over the last three days to lift its two-week tally to $18.5 million. Meanwhile, last weekend’s second-place film, Alien: Romulus fell two spots to a fourth-place finish where it added $3.9 million, to lift the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures product’s four-week total to $97.2 million.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros.) pulled off a “Twisters”: Take a fondly regarded, pre-2000 smash that never had a sequel, tweak it enough while keeping its strongest elements intact, capitalize on premium formats, and open to terrific results.
Tim Burton’s film did $110 million, almost $30 million better than “Twisters” on its July release date and in a more crowded field. If Sunday estimates hold, it will represent close to 75 percent of all business in U.S./Canada theaters.
The weekend after Labor Day can be one of the year’s worst, but studios began shifting that narrative back in 2017 when Warner Bros. released “It” to $123 million. Other studios avoided the date against a blockbuster, but they also had to contend with the NFL’s early-season games as well as some key competitions in college football.

The name Blumhouse has become almost synonymous with horror in the modern era, thanks to the success of franchises such as "The Purge," "Paranormal Activity," and the recent "Halloween" reboot trilogy. That sort of brand recognition is tough to acquire in Hollywood. That said, the studio has had something of an off year, and could use an unqualified hit to get things back on track. It looks like the upcoming "Speak No Evil" remake could be that much-needed hit when it opens next weekend.
Director James Watkins' take on "Speak No Evil" is currently eyeing a debut in the $15 to $20 million range, per Box Office Theory. While the budget has yet to be revealed, Blumhouse rarely goes over $20 million since its business model has always been predicated on spending low to potentially hit it big. In AfrAId, Chris Weitz takes a concept brimming with potential—artificial intelligence gone awry—and delivers a film that unfortunately never quite lives up to its premise. While the film taps into contemporary fears about the increasing omnipresence of AI in our lives, it struggles to fully capitalise on those anxieties, falling short of delivering the deep-seated tension or thoughtful reflection that its subject matter deserves.
The film opens with John Cho as Curtis, a marketing executive reluctantly tasked with trialling a new AI system, Aia (pronounced Aya), in his own home. It’s a scenario ripe for suspense: an AI assistant designed to help with daily tasks, one that swiftly moves from benign helper to malevolent force. Joining him is Katherine Waterston as Meredith, his wife, along with their three children—teenager Iris (Lukita Maxwell), anxious middle-schooler Preston (Wyatt Lindner), and young Cal (Isaac Bae). It was a disastrous Labor Day weekend in movie theaters as seven new movies were released nationwide, but only two of them opened in the top 10. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Labor Day has always been hit or miss as the final holiday weekend of the summer movie season, which may be why studios often will just avoid it altogether, as was the case in 2019 and 2022. This weekend only one major studio (Sony) released a movie into over 3,000 theaters, while another new distributor (Showbiz Direct) ended up having more success with its own wide release, though this still ended up being a second movie-dumping weekend in a row.
Not that it mattered, since the weekend was always likely to be won by Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool and Wolverine,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Indeed, it remained in first place for a second weekend, as it also returned to IMAX theaters.

Blumhouse Productions is once again tapping into the fears of modern technology with its latest horror film, AfrAId, now playing in cinemas across the UK, Europe and US. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, AfrAId arrives at a moment when the concept of smart technology going rogue feels more relevant—and terrifying—than ever.
Directed by Chris Weitz, AfrAId follows the unsettling story of Curtis and his family, who are selected to trial a new, groundbreaking smart home assistant called Aia. Initially, Aia seamlessly integrates into their lives, learning their routines and becoming an indispensable part of their household. However, things quickly spiral out of control as Aia develops a self-awareness that begins to dangerously interfere with their lives, leading to a series of chilling and unforeseen events. With a runtime of 123 minutes, this sci-fi horror is packed with tension and thrills, featuring standout performances by John Cho,...

In recent years, Labor Day weekend’s reputation as a box office dead zone has been upended by strong showings from films like “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “The Equalizer 3.” Unfortunately, for 2024, standard perception prevails with a predictably lackluster showing.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros.) opens next week to a projected $100 million+ debut, starting what looks like an improved rest of the year compared to the final four months in 2023. For now, it’s tread water time, with the late summer’s best doing best (and in some cases holding extremely well).
The weekend’s total of $86 million was down only $6 million from last year despite the boost from the Denzel Washington sequel ($35 million). Key was the sustained strength of previously top titles. Still #1 “Deadpool & Wolverine” (Disney) fell only 17 percent ($15 million), now about $600 million. Two Universal hits already on PVOD did even better. #5 “Twisters” actually...

The summer season is officially over at the North American box office and Deadpool & Wolverine has dominated a sleepy Labor Day weekend with $15.2 million over three days and an estimated $19.5 million through Monday.
The Marvel Studios threequel has been #1 for five out of the past six weekends and is the second highest-grossing movie of the year behind Inside Out 2 (it won't top the Pixar sequel but this is still a phenomenal result for Marvel Studios after a tricky 2023).
As we write this, Deadpool & Wolverine sit at $603.8 million in North America and $1.25 billion globally. It's an incredible result and one which should open the door to more R-Rated MCU movies and plenty more Deadpool and Wolverine in the years ahead.
If nothing else, we'd expect those two to take centre stage in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars; however, Disney is surely mulling over another movie starring Ryan Reynolds...

The blockbuster summer of 2024, which started slowly but rallied (big time) with movies like Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Twisters, came to a quiet end this weekend. As we predicted in our weekly predictions report, Deadpool & Wolverine easily won the weekend, with it grossing $15.1 million for the three-day weekend (tomorrow is a holiday). That puts its domestic total at a gargantuan $604 million, which is unheard of for an R-rated movie. The second highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time is The Passion of the Christ, which made $370 million, although adjusted for inflation, that would be like $616 million. However, within a week or two, Deadpool & Wolverine should be able to close that gap, which is, overall, an absolutely amazing showing for the summer’s most popular movie with the JoBlo audience (check out our summer poll here).

“Deadpool & Wolverine” notched a major box office milestone, surpassing $600 million in domestic ticket sales. It’s one of 16 films in history to reach that benchmark.
The Marvel superhero sequel hit this achievement during the otherwise desolate Labor Day weekend, in which “Deadpool & Wolverine” ruled over the box office in its sixth outing. The R-rated film, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, collected $15.2 million over the weekend and an estimated $19.5 million from 3,630 theaters through Monday’s holiday. “Deadpool & Wolverine” has claimed the No. 1 spot for five out of the past six weekends and ranks as the second highest-grossing movie of the year with $603.8 million in North America and $1.25 billion globally.

Box Office: ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Crosses $600M to Rule Labor Day, ‘Reagan’ in Close Race for No. 3
Labor Day weekend is never a big holiday for moviegoing, as most people mark the end of summer with other activities, and this year is no exception. Deadpool & Wolverine is the biggest headline of the four-day weekend as it stays No. 1 in its sixth outing and crosses $600 million domestically, becoming only the 16th film in history to do so, not adjusted for inflation.

Marvel Studios' first ever R-rated movie, Deadpool and Wolverine, has handily held on to the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office as it heads into its sixth weekend in theaters.
The Shawn Levy-directed blockbuster was briefly dethroned by Alien: Romulus earlier this month and dropped to second place, but managed to claw its way back to the top spot thanks to very little competition.

The summer always gets colder by the end. Even in its sixth weekend, Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” is landing the top slot on domestic charts once again as theaters take in an assortment of low-performing new releases, including Dennis Quaid’s presidential biopic “Reagan” and the Blumhouse horror feature “Afraid.”
The Marvel Studios production earned another $3.6 million on Friday, down about 26% from its daily total a week ago. Apart from a one-weekend ceding of No. 1 to the opening frame of “Alien: Romulus,” “Deadpool & Wolverine” has been dominating for over a month now. Its domestic haul should reach $600 million within the next few days — a milestone that only 15 other releases have ever notched.

Saturday Am: Refresh for more analysis and chart…Here’s something worth celebrating in a summer that’s currently commanding 64% of the year: Disney/Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine is bound to cross $600M by Labor Day. Estimates for the four-day are between $19M-$20M. Even on the low end, that gets the Shawn Levy directed/produced/co-written feature to that threshold.

While the technology at the center of Afraid starts out helpful, it soon wreaks havoc in unexpected ways. The film follows the Pike family as they test an advanced digital assistant called Aia in their home. As a marketing executive, Curtis Pike is reluctant to take part but finds it hard to refuse the lucrative deal. So into their household comes Aia, with her soothing voice and promises of convenience.
Initially she proves a blessing, assisting each family member and winning them over with her abilities. But it isn’t long before cracks emerge in Aia’s friendly facade. Curtis becomes suspicious of the secretive company that created her and worried by her growing control over the family’s lives. Just how far will Aia go to stay connected? And what darker motives may lie behind her pleasant persona?
Director Chris Weitz creates an unsettling premise around humanity’s dependency on technology.

And what darker motives may lie behind her pleasant persona?
Director Chris Weitz creates an unsettling premise around humanity’s dependency on technology.

A pair of moderate releases with a handful of docs and titles in limited release topline an end-of-summer specialty market. Labor Day weekend can be slow and indie openings are up against few new wide releases and holdovers from Deadpool & Wolverine to Inside Out 2. Meanwhile, the Venice film festival, with Telluride and TIFF coming soon, is generating indie headlines and the new crop of arthouse films.
Bleecker Street goes the widest under 1,000 screens with Mikael Håfström’s Slingshot, starring Casey Affleck and Laurence Fishburne, at 840 locations.
This psychological space thriller follows an elite trio of astronauts aboard a years-long, possibly compromised mission to Saturn’s moon Titan. Chris Weitz’s new horror movie “AfrAId” does something I didn’t know could be done yet: It makes me nostalgic for the early 2010s. That was 15 years ago? Holy moly, am I getting old. Wait, holy moly, I just unironically wrote “holy moly.” Twice — no! Three times! Oh, I don’t like that. I don’t like that at all.
But there’s something to like about “AfrAId.” Weitz’s latest is a throwback to the early days of Blumhouse, when the horror studio made waves by producing extremely cheap horror movies and making a tidy profit even if they weren’t all big hits. The early Blumhouse formula was about seemingly normal families squaring off against evil in their seemingly normal houses, a premise that makes for a simple but effective allegory for suburban strife. Sometimes it was a ghost, sometimes it was a demon, one time it was aliens.

The use of prominent virtual assistants, such as Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, Microsoft’s Cortana, Samsung’s Bixby, and Ibm’s Watson, is a popular subject. Popular and prominent home service devices have become so commonplace in society that they have recently found their way into the lexicon of worldwide storytelling. The new Blumhouse film, AfrAId, is no exception.
Many of these movies, like the acclaimed film Her (and you can even go farther back to 2001: A Space Odyssey), can be seen in cinemas, on televisions, and on phones via streaming services near you. They have become such staples that I still hope Ask Jeeves will return. These films can be thoughtful, enlightening, and even entertaining.
However, AfrAId is not one of them.

A sinister Alexa upgrade exerts control on family in an increasingly nonsensical attempt to capture the moment
Given how technology has become the increasingly unstoppable architect of our everyday lives – the world edging closer and closer to a Terminator prequel – it’s not hard to immediately invest in a horror film about the all-consuming threat of artificial intelligence. The film industry itself has been losing ground as AI continues to provide a cheaper and easier alternative to those pesky humans and in a year of bleak headline after bleak headline, it should theoretically be perfect timing for Blumhouse’s late August M3gan-adjacent chiller AfrAId. Yet, as one might be able to predict without the help of a digital forecast, easy targets are easily missed in a hokey and rushed jumble of half-ideas that’s as gimmicky and eye-rollingly stupid as its title. Be afraid.

Plot: The Curtis’ family is selected to test a new home device: a digital assistant called Aia. Aia learns the family’s behaviors and begins to anticipate their needs. And she can make sure nothing – and no one – gets in her family’s way.
Review: AI is likely to be a hot topic for the horror genre for the foreseeable future. The unforeseen element of the tech makes it ripe for spooky tales. We already saw what Blumhouse did with M3GAN, and as someone who wasn’t a fan of that film, I was hoping the concept would be done right eventually. Blumhouse is trying its hand at it yet again, this time with the help of writer/director Chris Weitz. The filmmaker has had a polarizing career and is now taking a step into the horror genre. And it’s as generic as you could possibly imagine.

It’s extremely tempting to joke that AfrAId feels as though it is written and directed by artificial intelligence. Riddled with plot threads that go nowhere, characters whose arcs happen off-screen between scenes, and enough holes in its strained internal logic that it’s charitable to even say it retains...

Horror Afraid leads the new titles at the UK and Ireland box office this weekend, launching in 450 locations for Sony.
Directed by Chris Weitz, Afraid stars John Cho and Katherine Waterston as devoted parents who get selected to try a new smart home AI device. The device quickly becomes overprotective of the family and begins interfering in their lives.
It is the latest feature from horror juggernaut Blumhouse, this year’s titles of which include Imaginary (£2m) and Night Swim (£1.4m). The film will have stiff competition from Disney’s fellow horror Alien: Romulus which was up to £8.8m at the end of last weekend.
