This is a comedy basically making fun of toxic masculinity culture and buddies too invested in the idea of being men to remember they are buddies or able to ever just walk away or talk about it.
While there is some interest, I presume the many 9 and 10 reviews were posted by the makers? There really is no action till the end (when the duel finally comes round). The story is built on a premise of being interesting because an old world duel is happening once again in the modern vibe. Trouble is they literally committed to the idea that its this entirely awesome idea, and nobody would ever wonder why? I think the audience might have done better if one or both of the characters WERENT unquestionably locked in this weird illegal unbelievable idea that this is how they should settle this here in modern times? OIf they had shown one of them trying to escape, or both trying to escape, or their friends being the sadistic driving forces or some sort of side twist the audience could see as a reasonable reason maybe? But it just never really felt normal?
Still it had a few moments. But it mostly dragged on with no real believable ideals driving it forward.
You learned to disrespect toxic masculinity, men in general for being this level of stupid, and women who are painted as in no way worth what they drive men to do. None of it was really working well. It was a better idea than the finished product.

Reading twenty reviews or so, to see if this is worth watching or not, but I found them unhelpful. They all seem to be written by people close to the cast and/or crew. To give you an idea of what you're getting into, this movie is mostly dialog and little action. The storyline is about a guy who finds out his best friend has been sleeping with his girlfriend, thus taking him into a duel like it's the wild west!! It did not make sense even after I finished watching. You wonder why can't men resolve their differences in civil manner, or is that intentional propaganda? I'm all for independent filmmaking and do recognize the effort here. Budget-wise, it's a good production. Dialog is engaging, but it's nothing exceptional. I loved Patrick Warburton's performance. Would I recommend it to someone like me? Probably not. I'd skip it. But if you just wanted to pass time, it wouldn't be a total waste. There's great attempt from the filmmakers to make quality production here, from the writing, to the acting and cinematography. Therefore, I'm not giving it a rating lower than 5/10.

I thought based on the trailer that this movie was going to be terrible. Like I actually watched it because I thought hey, this is gonna be a really terrible movie and sometimes that's what I want to see. But unfortunately (fortunately), I was actually surprised by how much I loved this. It's pretending to be a dumb stoner comedy, but it's actually smarter than most movies claiming to be smart, and funnier than most films claiming to be a comedy. The deeper themes shined through especially at the end, and I couldn't have enjoyed more how they stuck the landing. Despite the fun I had watching, I'm not giving it ten stars because this movie is objectively a 7/10, although the experience was, for a low budget dark comedy, exceptional.

The Duel, starring Dylan Sprouse and Patrick Warburton, poses an interesting question, namely, can or should modern problems be solved with historic solutions. Specifically, was the antebellum tradition of dueling a bonafide, or even an honorable way for real men to settle serious personal disputes? While this may seem outrageous on its face to modern audiences, the film goes to great lengths to explain, after a fashion, the philosophical basis for a practice that presumably spanned many centuries. Of course, the idea that SoCal beach bums would readily adopt the Code Duello may strain the credulity of the viewer. Undoubtedly inspired, to some degree or another, by the success and notoriety of Hamilton on Broadway, The Duel posits an improbable question in a very engaging and watchable package. Patrick Warburton as the dueling expert is reason enough to watch this!

Sometimes a movie comes along that diverts our attention and reminds us to relax, leave our phones behind, and lose ourselves in a story. That's just what "The Duel" delivers - a short dramedy about a night in the lives of four young men who find themselves divided when one of them shatters the bonds of friendship and falls for his best friend's girl. Alliances are tested, boundaries are crossed, and tempers ignite, leading to the best surprise movie ending of 2024.
Colin (Dylan Sprouse), Woody (Callan McAuliffe), Sam (Denny Love), and Kevin (Hart Denton) are Los Angeles buddies who enjoy beach parties and surfing. When Colin reveals that he's secretly cheating with Woody's girlfriend Abby (Rachel Matthews), their brotherhood is questioned, leading them on an unexpected trip across the border to a mysterious millionaires' villa to settle their differences.
Sprouse ("The Suite Life of Zack & Cody," "Big Daddy") pulls double-duty as the film's Executive Producer and unfaithful protagonist. Patrick Warburton ("Seinfeld," "The Tick") delivers big laughs as the peculiar antique store owner/historian who infuses himself into the group's unconventional quest for resolution.
Writers and directors Justin Matthews ("The Morning Show") and Luke Spencer Roberts ("The Package") avoid the temptation to draw on the young cast's aesthetics, an often used amateur approach by new directors. Instead, they allow the actors' capacity to explore emotional ranges, creating a casual cadence to their sometimes uncivil circumstances. The plot is established early and gradually develops a satisfying slow burn while exploring themes of friendship, virtue, and conflict. The dialogue blends authentic modern voices and immortal etiquette in a tale that could occur anywhere, anytime.
Surprisingly, the movie was filmed in and around Indianapolis during the pandemic. From a downtown tiki bar to an underground moat to a 107-acre sprawling estate, the film features some underestimated regions of The Circle City, the home of Pigasus Pictures, the independent film company behind "The Good Catholic," "The Miseducation of Bindu," and "So Cold The River."
"The Duel" is a satisfying film that questions our pride and principles and engages our curiosity up until the very last shot.

Masterfully shot. Great acting by a superb cast. Awesome sound. Innovative plot line for sure! And the complex ending toys with one's emotions. Funny and horrifying at the same time.
Warburton is phenomenal. Sprouse and Macaullife provide nuanced believable characters. Guttman is glorious. At any given point, any member of this large cast is doing the heavy lifting of carrying the movie!
Set in California and Mexico, with mysterious and opulent settings, this film was shot almost entirely in Indiana by up and coming Pigasus Pictures!
If you want to catch it on the big screen... it'll be on 500 screens nationwide on July 31 only! (Followed by a smaller number of theatres for a longer run). Will be a bit before it's streaming.
So put on your tux with tails and white tie (like the characters), grab a red Solo cup, and get to a theatre soon!

I was lucky enough to attend the premier in Indy. Knowing little about the plot, I was surprised by how much humor and heart was in this dark comedy. Warburton is fantastic in everything, and he shines alongside the younger cast members. The leads bring a lot of gravity to some of the more surreal plot lines, and there's a lot of tongue in cheek moments that play well to anyone who lives in Indiana and knows the landmarks where this was filmed. I highly recommend this film to anyone who enjoys indie films. It's smart, fun and you leave it feeling like you've had a great time with your crazy friends.

Love the movie and production! Always refreshing to see new concepts in movies at a time when all new movies are remakes or sequels. Highly recommend to all friends and family! Funny, creative, exciting, and interesting dynamics explored between friends and love in modern times. The character personalities mix well and highlight many differences in opinions between friends and family. Would love to see another movie by these directors. I've watched the movie 4 times and every time gets funnier and deeper. Can't wait to see where this team's careers take them. Fantastic job and great things to come for them.

I had the honor of being among the first to see "The Duel," and it's exceptional. This dark comedy about two best friends spiraling out of control is both hilarious and poignant. With standout performances and a unique plot, the film delivers a great message without being preachy. The humor is sharp, and the story maintains its emotional depth throughout. The direction by Luke and Justin is masterful, showcasing their talent and vision.
This independent film is a testament to the power of storytelling and creativity. It's a film that stays with you, provoking thought and laughter long after the credits roll. Highly recommended!

There are several reasons that I thoroughly enjoyed The Duel.
The storyline is solid and thought provoking. The cast of characters delivered this humourous dark story cleverly and intensely.
The film is stocked with unanticipated comedic situations and dialogue.
I am drawn to stories where morality and personal principles are battling the need for exact retribution. Its very amusing.
Hats off to the Creators, Cast, Pigasus Pictures and their on set crew, the cinematographers, lighting, costumes, and post production.
After seeing The Duel in the city with my favorite people, I am looking forward to seeing it again & adding The Duel to our physical movie collection.

The Duel is a brilliant dark comedy about two best friends trying to settle an argument. This film is a perfect combination of dark humor, comedy, and drama. The performances are incredible and really have you fully engaged with these characters and their story. Denton, Love, and Warburton will have your sides hurting from laughter! The script is layered with commentary on friendship, love, heartbreak and will. Justin Matthews and Luke Spencer Roberts truly are a dynamic writing duo to keep an eye out for! It's nothing short of a good time. You will most definitely have fun watching this. It will not disappoint!

I might not be the demographic for this movie (a 61 year old women) but I found the film very entertaining. It was smart, funny, very well acted, and certainly made you think (especially at the end). It's a rarity to find such an original film this day that still entertains and doesn't feel too artsy. I thought the Duel hit all the right notes. And in today's society where some praise toxic masculinity, I thought the Duel appropriately made fun of, yet took a serious look at the issue. The film is very well directed and well shot! Loved all the characters...and characters they were!! Go see it!

Had a great time at the movies watching THE DUEL - Patrick Warburton is fantastic as is the rest of the cast in this dark comedy. The production design of the film was top notch. There were several laugh out loud moments as the story developed. Really enjoyed the mix of contemporary problems among friends layered in the throwback "old ways" of solving problems with honor through dueling, that led to some very funny moments and interactions. The entire cast was solid and built an great ensemble for this "what a crazy thing happened to us!" kind of movie, in the same vein of The Hangover. Strongly recommend!
We attended the red carpet premiere and after party at the art museum of Indy, and had the best night ever! It was SO cool to se our hometown featured all throughout the film! I laughed the entire movie, and met some of the cast, who were just so kind! It was a great, fun, goofy movie!! The ending was a little outta pocket, but it also cracked me up! I do feel like there could've been an anlternate ending but overall it was great!! Indy and Pigasus Pictures should be so proud! Would love to see more films completely shot and produced in the Midwest like the Duel. Indianapolis ain't half bad!!!

Pigasus Pictures brings a simple premise of disappointment and betrayal within a close-knit brotherhood of friends, and the journey that ensues. An umbrella of tension between hilarious mad-cap moments, some whimsy, some dark humor, empathy and understanding. The dialogue is smart and fluid. Denny Love and Hart Denton as "the seconds" are comedically responsible for breaking the tensions between Sprouse and McAuliffe's characters. While the venerable Patrick Warburton shepherds the cast from start to finish. In the end, you want these boys to make the right decision... but will they? You'll have to see for yourself!

This is a sharp, dark comedy that explores friendship, rivalry, and the chaos that ensues when best friends clash over a shared love interest. With a talented cast and a unique narrative, the film stands out as a fresh addition to the dark comedy genre. A nice change of pace to what we have had in theaters lately.
The duel is not just a physical contest but a battle of wits and emotions, with surprising and often hilarious outcomes. Thanks to the great cast line up we have in this film!
Dylan Sprouse and Callan McAuliffe deliver standout performances as Colin and Woody. Sprouse brings a mix of charm and vulnerability to his role, while McAuliffe expertly balances arrogance with underlying insecurity. Their chemistry is palpable, making their rivalry both believable and entertaining. Patrick Warburton adds a significant comedic touch as Christof, the character who provides much-needed levity to the film's darker moments. Warburton's timing and delivery inject humor into the narrative, ensuring the film maintains a lively and engaging tone.
The supporting cast, including Hart Denton and Denny Love, who play Colin and Woody's best friends, Kevin & Sam, provides excellent comedic relief. Their performances enhance the film's dynamic and contribute to its overall charm. This could be said the same for Maria Gabriela de Faria as Aphrodite as her eagerness at the most inappropriate times was impeccable.
Justin Matthews and Luke Spencer Roberts make a notable debut with The Duel. I love how they managed the ability to blend dark comedy with sharp storytelling. Their direction is confident and inventive, capturing the variation of the characters' relationships and the absurdity of their situations. It's almost over the top, kind of satire like. The cinematography effectively conveys the film's tone, balancing dramatic and comedic elements with a polished yet gritty aesthetic.
The screenplay, written by Matthews and Roberts, is witty and incisive, exploring themes of friendship, rivalry, and the complexities of romantic entanglements. The dialogue is sharp, and the plot twists keep the audience guessing. The film's humor is both dark and clever, providing a refreshing take on the genre.

Patrick Warburton, Denny Love and Hart Denton are all hilarious in this film. But it's not all just laughs, there's plenty of action, drama and deeper philosophical themes woven between the dark humor. The juxtaposition of history, fantasy and modern day problems is wonderful. It was also fun seeing Dylan Sprouse all grown up and returning the big screen! Production is excellent, writing is great, and the ensemble cast is phenomenal. We need waaaaaay more movies like this one! The perfect blend. Lionsgate, give these guys a multi film deal.... Because I could watch about ten more of these immediately.
I went into this thinking I was frankly going to see another ex Disney Channel cash grab from a major studio and unseasoned filmmakers. But instead I was blow away by the creatively and uniqueness of this story. It's funny, compelling, and controversial. In other words, something more exciting than 99 percent of the studio corporate remakes we keep having shoved down our throats. Indie films like this are the lifeblood of cinema. The spectacle of the larger movies may be what keeps theaters afloat, but the experience of these smaller arthouse pieces that try and ask more questions than they answer are what make going to see something in theaters actually worth it.
What a welcome surprise.
What a welcome surprise.

In this gripping 2024 thriller narrated by the wonderful Patrick Warburton, a high-stakes drama unfolds when a man discovers his best friend's betrayal with his girlfriend. The revelation sparks a challenge to a gun duel, sending their circle of friends on a tense journey across the border to a breathtaking but ominous estate.
The film excels in its atmospheric storytelling, with the estate serving as a hauntingly beautiful backdrop that amplifies the story's psychological tension. The cinematography and set design are superb, capturing both the grandeur and the eeriness of the setting, enhancing the film's suspenseful tone.
Dylan Sprouse and Callan McAuliffe deliver standout performances as the embittered friends. Their portrayal of the deep-seated emotional conflict and moral ambiguity is both compelling and nuanced. The producers skillfully build suspense throughout the narrative, leading to a dramatic climax that is both impactful and thought-provoking.
While the film's resolution is best left undisclosed, it's a powerful exploration of betrayal and vengeance that will linger with audiences long after the final scene. Personally, I love movies that keep you thinking long after you've watched them.

It was a great story with some amazingly dark humor and had the best cast to do it with! It really helps show off the diversity of Indiana landscape! A definite must watch film! It shows truly how regrettable it can be to go against your best friends but also how once you have started anything as serious as a duel you must see it through to the end. The Biltmore house, the Inferno Room, and Bluespring Caverns are all hidden gems that this movie has helped expose these amazing places to the world! Pigasus Pictures has truly entered the big leagues with this film! And i can't wait to be able to own a copy so i can watch it over and over!

I had the privilege of seeing this movie premier in theatre and let me just say, it was an EXPERIENCE! The audience loved it. It got a standing ovation! I loved it. It'll have you on the edge of your seat but also laughing at the perfectly timed jokes. You can tell the cast has really great chemistry. The production quality is amazing and oh my gosh the ending..... the ending. It's crazy. The perfect amount of suspense, humor and WTF moments. Great job at keeping it unpredictable but not all over the place. The cast being lovely off camera was such a treat and makes me love the movie even more. It was a 10/10 in my book!

The Duel is a witty and fun dark comedy full of unexpected turns! The self deprecating humor makes this film all the more compelling. Definitely worth your time if you've got a good sense of humor. It has about every flavor of comedy with some really deep themes tied in. Spectacular performances by Dylan Sprouse, Callan McAuliffe, Denny Love, Hart Denton, Maria Gabriela De Faria, Rachel Matthews, Christian McGaffney, Ronald Guttman, and legend Patrick Warburton. Each character plays a critical part in this hilarious dynamic and holds an important piece to the story. Hilarious, relatable, original, and just a must watch in my opinion!
