Forty years ago, author William Gibson brought the world a cyberpunk novel called Neuromancer – and an adaptation of that story has been trudging its way through development hell pretty much ever since. Versions of a feature film adaptation have passed through the hands of directors like music video maker Chris Cunningham, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob‘s Chuck Russell, Torque‘s Joseph Kahn, Cube‘s Vincenzo Natali, and Deadpool‘s Tim Miller. An adaptation of Neuromancer is currently moving forward as a 10-episode series that’s set up at Apple TV+, and we’ve previously heard that BAFTA Award-nominee Callum Turner of Masters of the Air and The Boys in the Boat will be playing the lead character, Henry Dorsett Case. Now Deadline reports that Briana Middleton of Sharper and The Tender Bar is taking on the role of Case’s partner Molly,...

One of the last major Oscar players made its digital debut the same day that voting ended. Will that put the movie at the top of Academy members’ minds?

The surest bet is newly BAFTA-recognized Danielle Brooks, reprising her barn-burning role from the Broadway production. The Gravity actor added, “It’s fun to come in in the morning and it’s fun to write a screenplay and then have somebody build a set that you wrote, it really is.”
While Clooney has starred in dozens of projects, including Ticket to Paradise, Up in the Air, Michael Clayton, Ocean’s Eleven and ER, he has also directed a handful of films throughout his career such as The Tender Bar,...

George Clooney’s directing career has been one of both ecstasy and agony. His bold, respected spy dramedy debut (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) was immediately followed by the incredibly lauded (and incredibly great) period drama Good Night and Good Luck. What followed was a run of more mixed fare. One film was ambitious and flawed (The Midnight Sky), one overrated (The Ides of March), one undercooked (Leatherheads), and two really didn’t work. Then came The Tender Bar in 2021, a modest piece of work featuring nuanced performances from an impressive cast. It’s an old-fashioned picture starring Ben Affleck, who offers many old-fashioned, matinee idol charms, square jaw and all. Perhaps Clooney learned something about himself as a filmmaker with The Tender Bar: he may be at his best when breathing life into fact-based drama and not trying to be too cute about it.

The scrappy ragtag team, the gruff but kind coach, the against-the-odds triumph — sports dramas rarely veer far from a basic template. It’s no surprise when the story’s athletes accomplish their unlikely goal; it’s how the director leads us there that matters. In the case of The Boys in the Boat, a telling of true events that can feel overly cautious in its admiring distance, the surprises lie in small moments and grace notes.
At the helm for his ninth feature, George Clooney follows the intimate coming-of-age tale The Tender Bar with a return to the realm of history. He puts a subdued spin on the story of unlikely Olympians — and generally avoids the stodginess of The Monuments Men. George Clooney officially has eight directorial features under his belt, with the ninth, The Boys in the Boat, rowing towards a December 25th release. And it was with that movie that Clooney faced perhaps his most unique challenge yet: directing remotely.
It was during filming on The Boys in the Boat — which began in March 2022 (the project has been in development for quite some time) — that George Clooney caught Covid for the first time. But production couldn’t just stop and so he had to direct from an iPad. Speaking with People, Clooney remembered one scene with Callum Turner, who plays Olympian rower Joe Rantz. “I’m on an iPad hacking away from my bedroom…[co-producer Grant [Heslov] was sitting on the camera and they’d hold up the iPad to Cal and I’d go, ‘Ah, go fast.’ I’d rasp out ‘Faster’ whatever that was.” While this didn’t result in the best direction,...

An inspirational true story turned into a bestselling novel is about to make its way to the big screen. That tends to be the natural playbook for these sorts of dramas, but this one in particular comes loaded with an extra amount of star power.
Based on author Daniel James Brown's book of the same name, "The Boys in the Boat" tells the well-documented events surrounding the 1936 Summer Olympics and the feats accomplished by the US men's rowing team from the University of Washington. As with other incredibly underdog stories, the stories of the individuals involved -- all of whom were working class athletes struggling to come out the other side of the Great Depression, almost rivals the magnitude of their achievements.
A few significant differences with "The Boys in the Boat," however, comes from its A-list director George Clooney and the historical backdrop of Nazi Germany hosting the...

Joel Edgerton Coaches An Underdog Rowing Team in George Clooney’s ‘Boys in the Boat’ Trailer (Video)
When money, food and shelter were in short supply, joining a rowing team was a matter of life and death. That’s the hook in George Clooney’s latest directorial effort, “The Boys in the Boat.”
Based on Daniel James Brown’s non-fiction novel, the picture concerns the 1936 University of Washington rowing team that competed at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. The trailer hits all the underdog sports team cliches, although cliches become as much for a reason. The picture looks handsomely staged and impeccably acted by the likes of Joel Edgerton and Callum Turner.
This marks Clooney’s first directorial effort since the Ben Affleck-starring “The Tender Bar” in 2021. It’s unquestionably a sign of the times that Clooney hasn’t directed a feature for a theatrically focused studio since “Rubicon” for Paramount in late 2017.

Rudolph Isley, a founding member of the Grammy-winning Isley Brothers who helped create some of the most memorable songs in American musical history, has died. His brother Ron confirmed the news to Deadline. Rudolph Isley was 84.
In a statement provided to Deadline, Ron Isley said of his brother’s passing, “There are no words to express my feelings and the love I have for my brother. Our family will miss him. But I know he’s in a better place.”
The Isley Brothers have had various lineups through the years, but Rudy was with the band from its beginnings in the late 1950s to his retirement from music in 1989, when he took up a Christian ministry. During that time, they recorded such classics as “Shout,” cowritten by Rudy, which in 1959 became their first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. The record sold over a million copies. There’s something familiar in the air — namely, another Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Viola Davis perhaps. Despite being outside the top five and six in our Oscar and Golden Globe rankings, respectively, the newly minted Egot winner is currently expected to land a SAG Award bid — her 12th — for her supporting turn in Ben Affleck‘s “Air,” according to our early odds, in which she’s in fifth place. But that should not come as a shock to anyone.
After all, few people have ruled over the SAG Awards quite like Davis has. The 11-time nominee has parlayed five of seven individual nominations into victories, prevailing in lead for “The Help” (2011) and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (2020), supporting for “Fences” (2016) and TV drama actress for “How to Get Away with Murder” (2015-16). Hollywood megastar George Clooney has come out in support of SAG-AFTRA and its 160,000-strong membership as the performers union takes to picket lines.
“This is an inflection point in our industry,” Clooney said in a short statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
“For our industry to survive that has to change. For actors, that journey starts now,” he added as the actors union goes on strike after failing to reach a new deal with studios and streamers.
SAG-AFTRA members join Writers Guild of America members, on strike since early May, in the first double strike in Hollywood since 1960, which looks to largely shut down the film and TV business.
Clooney in his statement added “actors and writers in large numbers have lost their ability to make a living.”

For all involved, prolific author and cultural critic Chuck Klosterman’s 2008 book “Downtown Owl” sets the stage for a number of firsts. For starters, it’s Klosterman’s earliest fiction novel and is the source at the heart of Lily Rabe (“The Tender Bar”) and Hamish Linklater’s (“Midnight Mass”) joint directorial debut which just premiered at the Tribeca Festival.
If only the freshness associated with all these firsts was felt in the film by Rabe and Linklater, who are both creative collaborators and real-life partners. Instead, something feels stale, strange and out-of-focus right at the start of “Downtown Owl,” a cold and aimless 91-minute feature that makes its compact runtime feel anything but, while broadly navigating its small town rural tale with little insight and even less purpose.

Before diving into a new role, Briana Middleton prepares her suit of armor. Metaphorically speaking, of course.
“I love prep and research,” the actress says of her process. “I don’t like this analogy, but it feels like ammo or armor going into a project. If I have all of this stuff surrounding me, and then I go into the chaos that is filming, I don’t go crazy.”
In Benjamin Caron’s A24 psychological thriller Sharper, Middleton plays Sandra, a young woman who finds herself wrapped up in the ruthless world of New York City con artists. What begins as a picture-perfect love story between Sandra and Tom (Justice Smith) slowly unravels, as the story reveals its characters are not who they appear to be.
Upon reading the script, the New Orleans-based actress says she immediately was won over by her character. “I fell in love with her heart,...
