Hilary's comeback
"You could be my dirty secret, I could be yours, we could be a rumor, never be sure, I could meet you in the backseat, late night, high up in first class, mile high..." Dunno, first impressions count, and I thought about DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES even though I've never seen it. And then there's the old golden Mercedes-Benz convertible, reminiscent of Carly Rae Jepsen's music video TONIGHT I'M GETTING OVER YOU. And another thing, why is it okay for a girl to be in hot pursuit of a guy, the way Hilary and her dance posse is after this guy? Role reversal and he'd be a stalker! :) I'm just saying.
As for this music video, Hilary was a pretty child during the mid-aughties, with songs like WHY NOT, SO YESTERDAY, WAKE UP and COME CLEAN. She was very young and came across as even way younger, very, very naive, overly into fashion, and perhaps a bit well what word am I gonna use, nothing nasty, let's just say pampered overprotected white bread duckling... Then she matured and we the fans had PLAY WITH FIRE and really time should have stopped there. Acting-wise, she had the looks, but let's just admit the repertoire was limited. Still say she should have been in something great, but... There was the BONNIE AND CLYDE debacle, the still-floundering project that dropped her from the lead role due to her pregnancy. And this here is all about bouncing back post-toddler and yes, hell, how many mommies can still look like this? Perhaps only a few in the entire damn world. But, but, but, the magic is gone. At least here, with this one. CHASING THE SUN, another comeback vehicle, she fares considerably better there, in my opinion. Here everything is slightly forced, an effort to look good, I'm sorry to say. Do not get me wrong, I'm grading on a curve here, and Hilary has the toughest competition, the teenager from WAKE UP, and the young debutante from PLAY WITH FIRE, and they are hard acts to follow.
Addendum (later same day): As is my habit, I let first impressions count for a whole lot when judging music videos. I saw this one today for the first time, and that which I wrote earlier today, was my immediate reaction. I'm of course heavily influenced by her early work, and as is another habit of mine, I cling to how things used to be. Well, nobody can stay the same, and the looks of an adolescent is but a fleeting treasure. A very valid point made here earlier, is how beautiful Hilary still is in this music video. Pardon me for being shallow, huh? My subject, the Glam in RavenGlamDVDCollector, demands it. So, it's not the good old days anymore, but there is still a very bright future for Hil.
Not to mention that she appears so delightfully mellow in here. Back in her teenage days, very, very far from the (almost approachable) casually laid-back style here.
(Love ya, Hills!)
