Eight piece rock and rollers The Revivalists have returned with a brand new album “Pour It Out Into The Night”, along with the stellar new single “Kid” via Concord Records. “Pour It Out Into The Night ” is a life-affirming album. Offering an unburdening and an appreciation for living in the moment, the new music was fueled by lessons in gratitude and life realizations that came from personal experiences over the past few years as the world came to a standstill.

Venice has played host to the premiere of Harry Wootliff’s oddly bog-standard story of a Ramsgate benefits officer wooed by a love-rat
Harry Wootliff is the talented director who made the excellent, Glasgow-set Only You a few years ago. Ruth Wilson is a reliably fine actor; Tom Burke was a revelation in Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir. On paper, therefore, True Things –their account of a toxic relationship in the less glamorous bits of Kent – has everything going for it. I’m still scratching my head over what went wrong with this one.

Ruth Wilson puts in a riveting performance in Venice Film Festival Horizons entry True Things, an impressive follow up to director Harry Wootliff’s debut Only You. Wilson and Jude Law are also among the producers for this intense story, based on the novel True Things About Me by Deborah Kay Davies.
Like Only You, True Things is a portrait of an all-consuming relationship, but this one’s different. Kate (Wilson) hates her job in a benefits office in a coastal town, and is flattered when a claimant (Tom Burke) flirts with her. He’s just out of prison, but that doesn’t bother her: in fact, it may excite her. The pair embark on a passionate liaison, but “Blond” — as he’s named on Kate’s phone — is unpredictable and unreliable. One minute he’s sweeping her off her feet and taking her to wild parties; the next he’s disappeared with her car.

From the second that benefits office worker Kate makes charged eye contact with the flirty, scuzzily charismatic claimant across the desk from her, you’re torn between pulling her back, as a sensible best friend would, and urging her to go for it, as we might secretly do ourselves. The man has red flags practically pinned in his bleach-blond, boyband-style hairdo, not just because he’s an ex-con, and not just because intimate client relations are strictly verboten in Kate’s job.
As played, quite rivetingly, by Tom Burke, he seduces women in a way that makes clear his simultaneous capacity to hurt them; as played, quite recklessly, by Ruth Wilson, Kate comes across as a woman who can live with being hurt if it makes her feel alive. Harry Wootliff, one of Britain’s rising women filmmakers, is in Venice for the world premiere, in the Horizons section, of her second feature, “True Things,” starring Ruth Wilson and Tom Burke. The film also plays at Toronto. Variety spoke to the writer-director, and the producers, Wilson, Jude Law, Tristan Goligher and Ben Jackson.
The film, based on Deborah Kay Davies’ novel “True Things About Me,” was initially developed by Jackson and Law’s production company Riff Raff U.K. and Wilson’s Lady Lazarus. When they brought on board The Bureau’s Tristan Goligher, he recommended Wootliff, with whom he was working on relationship drama “Only You.” That film went on to earn her a BAFTA nomination for outstanding debut, and the British Independent Film Award for debut director.
“True Things” follows Kate, a single woman in her early thirties, working in a dead-end office job in an English coastal town.

Steve McQueen’s “Lovers Rock,” one of five movies in the director’s “Small Axe” anthology on Amazon, is a dreamy, sensual fantasia of a film, a 68-minute evocation of one Saturday night at a dance party in 1980 London. The story follows Martha (newcomer Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn) as she sneaks out from her family home to attend “Blues Night” at a house in London’s West Indies community that’s been transformed into one big reggae dance floor.
In the peak scene, she dances with a young man she’s met (Micheal Ward) to the rhythm of Janet Kay’s silky “Silly Games.” And when the music stops, the crowd keeps singing, entranced by the fevered bliss of the song.
McQueen has focused on the Black experience in all of the “Small Axe” films. Several of them depict real events: “Mangrove” is a courtroom drama and “Red, White and Blue...

“The Cry” producer Synchronicity Films has optioned Craig Russell’s “Lennox” book series and will adapt the period Scotland-set thrillers for TV. Robert Murphy – whose extensive series credits include “Dci Banks,” “Inspector George Gently,” and “Vera” – is attached to handle the adaptation.
The “Lennox” series is set in tough inner-city Glasgow in the 1950s. The titular Lennox is a private eye, born in Scotland but raised in America after the Depression. He is billed as “a damaged man in a hard city at a hard time” and finds himself caught between three Glasgow crime bosses – The Three Kings.

Ahead of its full slate of nominations next month, BAFTA has unveiled the 10 short-listed films that will compete in the category of outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer.

“The Personal History of David Copperfield” was the big winner at Sunday’s British Independent Film Awards taking home five trophies: Best Supporting Actor for Hugh Laurie, Best Screenplay for Simon Blackwell and director Armando Iannucci, Best Casting (Sarah Crowe), Best Production Design (Cristina Casali), and Best Costume Design (Suzie Harmon and Robert Worley).
But while Iannucci’s film will undoubtedly continue to gain recognition for its below-the-line crafts, the writer/director is firm that his film is not just “a neatly tied-up period drama.” Rather, he characterizes it as “celebrating the Britishness that we don’t hear much about at the moment.” As he explains, “It’s so tempting to see Britain as isolated and withdrawn and serious at the moment. We forget that actually, for most people, Britain is funny, outgoing, generous and is about community. And that’s what this film is a celebration of.”

On December 1, Josh O’Connor won Best Actor at the British Independent Film Awards for Harry Wootliff’s heartfelt drama “Only You.” That bookends the Bifa that he picked up in 2017 for Francis Lee’s Lgbt romance “God’s Own Country.” And this rising British star may well need to find room on his mantle for a slew more awards as he is getting rave reviews for his portrayal of a young Prince Charles in season three of “The Crown.”
Watching O’Connor work the press line at the BIFAs, one can’t help but be struck by the fact that he even stands and walks like the heir to the throne. It’ almost like the actor, who also headline TV’s “The Durrells” for four seasons, can’t quite shake this new role. “It’s been really nice. I’m coming to the end of dealing with the ear-puns,” jokes O’Connor.

Syrian documentary “For Sama” was the big winner at the British Independent Film Awards on Sunday, taking home four awards for its sobering portrayal of how the ongoing war in Syria affects the women who live there.
“For Sama,” directed by Aleppo resident Waad al-Kateab with Edward Watts, follows al-Kateab through five years of her life as she gets married and gives birth to her daughter, Sama, all while the city crumbles around her. The film won BIFAs for Best British Independent Film, Best Director, Best Documentary, and Best Film Editing, adding to an awards list that includes The Golden Eye for Best Documentary at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary at the SXSW Film Festival.
