Mari Tamaki is a high school who dreams of doing something special but is too afraid to take the first step. However, her life changes when she meets Shirase Kobuchizawa, who dreams of going to Antarctica.
To earn money for a trip to Fremantle, Mari takes a job and thinks about Antarctica. She draws the attention of coworker Hinata Miyake, who decides to join her. The three friends head to Tokyo to observe the Antarctic civilian exhibition.
The girls are approached by Yuzuki Shiraishi, an actress who was invited to film in Antarctica who has no interest in going. However, her mother says that if they can befriend her and convince her to go, they will be able to tag along.
With the looming threat of studies, Mari and the others go to a summer training camp in order to prepare for the voyage to Antarctica. They meet Gin Todo, who has them go through flag placing exercises.
The date of the expedition draws ever closer. Mari is excited to go, but her friend Megumi has been acting very strange. When the moment arrives, unspoken words between the two finally gush out.
Arriving in Singapore for a two day layover, Hinata is shocked to discover she has lost her passport. Without it, she cannot go to Antarctica. As the deadline approaches, the group risks not being able to travel together.
The group arrives in Fremantle and see the ship that will take them to Antarctica. They explore the ship and wonder how the trip is going to go. Shirase then has some words with Gin about her missing mother.
The ship sets sail for Antarctica. Mari and the others start training through various odd jobs and grow excited for their destination. However, a bout of seasickness strikes and their enthusiasm takes a hit.
One of the crew has fallen in love with Gin and asks the girls if they can interview her for information. They get more than they bargained for when the conversation turns to Shirase's mother Takako.
The girls arrive at Syowa Station and start preparing it for the rest of the expedition. Considering a role in a drama, Yuzuki wonders what friendship is and how the other girls are so close with each other.
The girls start receiving some video messages from friends and family congratulating them on their journey. The occasion is not entirely a happy one, however, as Hinata gets an email from people she'd rather forget.
The girls head out to continue the expedition on a snow cat. However, they will be going to the place where Takako vanished 3 years ago. Shirase is unsure of what to do now that she has finally gotten to this point.
The Antarctic expedition is drawing to a close. The girls, along with the other members, decide to have one last day of celebration. On the place where her mother vanished, Shirase has conflicting feelings.
