IndieWire attended the New York City premiere of “Adam Sandler: Love You” on Tuesday, August 20. Following “Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh” from 2018, the actor and comedian returns to Netflix for his latest stand-up special, directed by none other than Josh Safdie.
Reuniting with one of his “Uncut Gems” directors, Sandler told IndieWire that being directed by Safdie for this special was a very, very collaborative experience. “He was very hands on,” Sandler told IndieWire. “Right when he became a part of it, he had thought after thought, and I thought I was just going to do a standard stand up special. I had an act that I’ve been working on and all my stuff [prepped], and then Josh came up with some ideas that were different than that.”
At the end of last year, it was reported that Sandler was set to make his reunion with his 2019 crime thriller directors with a “live baseball” film.

Nearly six years after the release of his last comedy special, Adam Sandler is returning to Netflix with “Adam Sandler: Love You.” The comedy special directed by “Good Time” and “Uncut Gems” co-director Josh Safdie will premiere globally on the streamer Aug. 27.
The first trailer for the special shows Sandler in a surprisingly intimate theater rather than a large arena. After joking with the audience a bit, he gets down to the brass tacks of what everyone can expect.
“Anyway, I talk a lot and then I sing and then we do a bunch of s–t. All right, so here it goes,” Sandler says.
The ever-moving camera then cuts between Sandler onstage with mic in hand, closeups of him signing shirts and a car driving away as its being chased by a crowd of people. “We’ve lost control,” Sandler says as a dog appears from backstage and happily greets the audience.

Best known this time of year for “The Hanukkah Song,” Adam Sandler took a more somber tone on Tuesday to remember the late comedic actor Chris Farley on the 21st anniversary of his death.
Sandler, 52, shared a clip from his Netflix special Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh, in which he pays tribute to “my friend Chris Farley” with a song.
“The first time I saw him he was sweeter than s—,” Sandler sings. “Plaid jacket and belt too tight, he wasn’t even doing a bit.”
Farley and Sandler became close friends when they worked together on Saturday Night Live in the 90s.
