Music Box Films has acquired the North American rights to writer-director Martika Ramirez Escobar’s genre-bending “Leonor Will Never Die,” which won the Special Jury Prize for Innovative Spirit in Sundance this year after premiering in the festival’s World Cinema Dramatic Competition.
The film tells the story of Leonor Reyes, once a major player in the Filipino film industry during its ragtag action cinema glory days, but now in her golden years and struggling to pay her bills. When she reads an advertisement for a screenplay contest, Leonor begins tinkering with an unfinished script about a young man avenging his brother’s murder at the hand of thugs.
But after a falling television knocks her unconscious and sends her into a coma, Leonor finds herself inside her incomplete movie, re-writing and editing on the fly in a fantastical bid to complete the film while her body lies in limbo.

This year’s nominees for Best Music Video and Best Music Film are an interesting pack to say the least. With the elimination of the nomination committees, the nominations this year truly reflect what recording academy members loved and wanted to honor, but who will they want to honor the most?
SEE2022 Grammy predictions: Album of the Year Best Music Video
At first glance, this award should be an easy win for Lil Nas X’s “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”. The song’s video is easily the most talked about and praised of the year for its bold statement about queerness and religion. The video has also won its fair share of awards already, including three VMAs (among them Video of the Year and Best Direction), the Ama for Favorite Music Video, and the Ema for Best Video. The controversial and contentious experiment where Warner Bros. has debuted its 2021 slate of feature films on HBO Max will hit a crescendo in October thanks to the releases of “The Many Saints of Newark” and “Dune” on the streaming platform. Both “Many Saints” producer and co-writer David Chase and “Dune” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve have criticized the corporate decision to release films day-and-date in theaters and via HBO Max, but despite the outcry, the two highly anticipated features lead a massive lineup of acclaimed library movie titles and Emmy Award-winning original series coming to the network in October 2021. Highlights include:
“Curb Your Enthusiasm” (October): Larry David’s Emmy Award-winning series returns for its 11th season in October and will tackle the coronavirus pandemic in a way that feels organic to the show and its protagonist. “We figured out a way that we are definitely living in a reality where the pandemic has happened,...

How many filmmakers get to release two, technically three film and TV projects in a row? Earlier this summer, AppleTV+ released the adaption of Stephen King’s “Lisey’s Story,” which Larrain directed and then in August, his last feature, “Ema” co-starring Gael Garcia Bernal, was finally released theatrically in the U.S.

Documentaries about a da Vinci and a dictator, a Pablo Larraín drama with Gael Garcia Bernal, a Donnie Yen martial arts thriller by the late Benny Chan, and Coda — Apple’s record-busting Sundance acquisition — make specialty bows this weekend as the arthouse sector fights through a slow reopening.

The distributor debuts Larraín’s Ema in 11 theaters in nine markets with plans to expand thereafter — to maybe another 20, but it’s hard to say. “The normal [criteria] like what’s your opening per-screen average right now, those are all upside down,” Westphal tells Deadline.
He said a strong perf by Anthony Bourdain doc Roadrunner (Focus Features) and The Green Knight (A24) “doing as well as it has over the past few weeks, are good signs.

There are three new wide releases this weekend, but the question is whether they can pull the box office out of the downward trend it has been on. Last weekend had an overall box-office total of $65 million which, despite the opening of a big budget comic book franchise film, was the weakest overall weekend gross since June. It’s not easy to say exactly how much the resurgence of Covid-19 has impacted the box office in recent weeks, as there are other variables to factor in, from shortened or nonexistent theatrical windows, to content that perhaps isn’t quite “Must See” status, to get people out the door.
However, at this point it’s hard to deny that the Delta variant could set back the industry’s recovery, as Covid cases are the highest they’ve been in over six months and double where they were just a few weeks ago.

This review of “Ema” was first published after the film’s premiere at the 2019 Venice Film Festival.
Several years after Pablo Larraín’s fractured first lady biopic “Jackie” launched the filmmaker from the festival circuit to the Oscar race, the Chilean director returns with “Ema,” a hypnotic new film that builds on the premise of his previous effort while taking it to more formally daring ends.
As with Larraín’s American debut, the Spanish-language “Ema” once again finds the director tracing the complicated emotional life of a fiery female lead, using all the tools of the trade to map the peaks and valleys of a protagonist’s fractured mental state.
The similarities end there, because “Ema” is its own unique beast, a prickly punk remix that takes a traditional art house character study about a young woman dealing with emotional turmoil and filters it through the stylistic approaches more common...

Though we’re already halfway through 2021, we’re only a month away from the official North American release of “Ema,” one of our favorite films of 2020. Okay, that’s a bit of an understatement, as Pablo Larrain’s dance drama ended up on our lists of best films, best posters, best cinematography, and best soundtracks/scores. All that to say, we think everyone should go out and see “Ema” when it hits theaters in August.

Pedro Almodovar, Jane Campion, Paolo Sorrentino in the mix.
It may only be the second day of the Cannes Film Festival but industry chatter is growing louder around what could be a very enticing world premiere line-up at the Venice Film Festival – in just eight weeks.

In what may feel late to average viewers at home and oddly early to awards insiders, it’s nearly time for the Golden Globes! Airing nearly two months after its typical early January date, the HFPA’s 78th annual ceremony was pushed back along with the rest of the awards calendar in order to accomodate releases delayed by the global pandemic. That being said, the Oscars won’t be held until April 25 and the nominations won’t be announced until March 15.
But those are concerns for the film world. Here, we’re predicting the TV winners, and hoo boy are they as tricky as ever. Even though new TV continued to roll out throughout the year, the 2021 class of Golden Globe nominees still reflects an upended release schedule. Neither of last year’s big winners (“Succession” and “Fleabag”) are eligible in 2021, and plenty of repeatedly sidelined series found their way into the running.

The start of February 2021 was a milestone for Anya Taylor-Joy, who picked up career-first nominations from the Golden Globes (Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for “Emma” and Best Actress in a Limited Series for “The Queen’s Gambit”) and the Screen Actors Guild Awards (Outstanding Actress in a Limited Series for “The Queen’s Gambit”). While Taylor-Joy is competing in the limited series categories for “The Queen’s Gambit,” it appears the actress isn’t shutting the door completely on playing series protagonist Beth Harmon again.
“It’s so surreal and very wonderful that people want a second season,” Taylor-Joy recently told Deadline following her big awards nomination week. “We never thought about it, there was no discussion about it. That said, never say ‘never’ in Hollywood.”

From the moment she put down Walter Tevis’ book The Queen’s Gambit, Anya Taylor-Joy knew how she would portray chess genius Beth Harmon, who blazes a trail and explodes glass ceilings during the Cold War-era 1960s as a femme champion in the testosterone-dominated game-peg playing world.
“I said to myself, ‘If we were shooting tomorrow, I know exactly what I’m doing, I know how I want to do it, I understand this woman so well’ “, said Taylor-Joy, the American-born Argentine-British actress who received not only SAG and Golden Globe nominantions for the role but also, Globe Best movie actress nom for her turn in Focus Features’ update of Jane Austen’s Emma.
“With Beth, it was instincts on a whole other level, I never had to reach for anything,” Taylor-Joy said. “They just had to yell ‘action’ and something would happen.”

This year’s Oscars have set a new record for the largest number of entries ever in the Best Original Song category, but the 105 eligible songs do not include Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ “(If Only You Could) Save Me,” a 1930s-style big band song from “Mank” that was recently nominated for the second annual Society of Composers and Lyricists Awards.
The song is heard briefly coming from a radio in the background of one scene and plays for only about 40 seconds. Academy rules require “a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody,” and the song was judged to not fulfill that requirement.
Other songs that didn’t make the list, although they were thought to be in the running, include “Uh Oh” from “Promising Young Woman” and “Boss Bitch” from “Birds of Prey.” Even without those, the list of eligible songs tops 100 for the first time...

“Saint Maud,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Nomadland,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Ammonite” are among the leading films on the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ (BAFTA) longlist for annual British Film Awards that were announced Thursday.
The publication of the longlists follows the BAFTA 2020 Review, where over 120 wide-ranging changes were introduced across voting, membership and campaigning to address a lack of diversity in the 2020 Film Awards nominations. As part of these changes, a new longlisting initial round was introduced for the awards, resulting in three rounds of voting. Round one voting, which took place from Jan. 12-26, produced the longlists in all categories.

The Golden Globes were announced on Feb. 3 where Netflix’s “Mank’ from David Fincher led the nominations with six. The categories have been analyzed and what they mean for the awards season. Down below are the five big takeaways to the overall narrative and how it relates to the Oscars.
“Nomadland” is the one to beat, and we should get used to it.
Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” landed an impressive four nominations — including best picture, director, actress in a drama and screenplay. It has dominated the critics awards, winning more than a dozen best picture prizes, with Zhao nearly sweeping every director award. Frances McDormand has also been leading in actress trophies. The Searchlight Pictures feature should continue its steamroll. When it comes to the major guilds, it’s expected to perform well with the American Society of Cinematographers, Cinema Audio Society and the like.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has unveiled “longlists” that narrow the field in 24 categories at the Ee British Academy Film Awards. The longlists were part of an overhaul of BAFTA voting procedures instituted in September to increase the diversity of nominations. Longlists existed in BAFTA voting prior to 2012 but were eliminated that year.
Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” led all films by being longlisted in 15 different categories, buoyed by four different cast members in the Best Supporting Actor category. It was followed by David Fincher’s “Mank” with 14, Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman” with 13 and Paul Greengrass’ “News of the World” with 12.
Other films that hit double digits included “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “The Mauritanian” and “Saint Maud,” which were each shortlisted in 11 categories.

BAFTA has published the longlists for its 2021 Film Awards, which members will now whittle down to the final nominations. You can see the lists in full below, there are 15 per category for most awards, with exceptions.
These aren’t nominations, so drawing too many conclusions from them is premature at this stage. However, if a title didn’t make the cut here, it won’t be getting a nom.
A few takeaways: as per the Globes, Minari is in for foreign-language movie but not for Best Film (Another Round made both); Tenet missed both Best Film and British Film but did make Director and below-the-line categories; Spike Lee isn’t on the Director list, but Da 5 Bloods is on nine including Best Film and Screenplay; Malcolm & Marie missed everything aside from the two lead performances; zilch for On The Rocks, and fairly slim pickings for Apple in total,...

In what is the first official glimpse of the pandemic’s impact on U.K. film and television production, British Film Institute (BFI) data reveals that film and high-end television production spend exceeded £2.84 billion ($3.9 billion) in 2020, only 21% down on 2019 levels.
BFI boss Ben Roberts tells Variety that the speed with which the industry was able to band together and hammer out guidelines for production allowed the sector to weather the toll of the pandemic, particularly as it allowed the buoyant studio sector to quickly rev up operations. Film and television production has continued through the U.K.’s three national lockdowns, working to pan-industry guidelines that were drawn up in late spring. The BFI led the Screen Sector Taskforce, creating the guidance for Covid-safe productions alongside a host of industry players, including the British Film Commission and producers’ trade org Pact.

Many of the films we expected to be nominated for Golden Globes made it into today’s announcement, including “Nomadland,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” but few could have predicted the presence of one nominee: “Music.” Sia‘s directorial debut starring Kate Hudson as a rebellious woman charged with taking care of her autistic teenage half-sister wasn’t even in the Gold Derby prediction center. Yet, it managed to land two nominations for Hudson and for Best Film Comedy/Musical. The inclusion of “Music” was the first topic in Gold Derby’s new slugfest about the film nominations, featuring me and fellow contributors Riley Chow, Sam Eckmann, Luca Giliberti and Rob Licuria. Watch the video slugfest above.
Eckmann described the “Music” nominations as totally “out of the blue,” especially for it getting into Best Film Comedy/Musical over films like “Emma” and “On the Rocks.” Just as out of...

Nominations for the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced Wednesday morning by Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson, and history could be made when the awards are eventually handed out later this month. Anya Taylor-Joy,Olivia Colman and Sacha Baron Cohen are poised to potentially join an elite group of performers who’ve won two acting awards in the same year.
After Taylor-Joy broke out as the lead in Netflix’s limited series adaptation of “The Queen’s Gambit,” a Best Movie/Limited Series Actress nomination for the young actress seemed like a foregone conclusion. She’s up against Cate Blanchett (“Mrs. America”), Daisy Edgar-Jones (“Normal People”), Shira Haas (“Unorthodox”) and Nicole Kidman (“The Undoing”).
Taylor-Joy was leading the race heading into the nominations announcement on Wednesday, and she had been for a while. It’s exactly the kind of role the Hollywood Foreign Press Association loves, so if...

Below is just a sampling of their cheers and jeers for the 14 film categories. What do you think of the roster revealed on February 3? Sound off here if you dare:
Best Film Drama
gabspss: They Don’T Like “Da 5 Bloods.”
Luca: “Promising Young Woman” fans, you Won!
Best Film Comedy/Musical
tom92: “Hamilton” should not be eligible.
gorman: What on god’s green earth is “Music”?!
Best Film Drama Actress
Aint2Proud2Beg: Of course Andra Day got a nomination. She is amazing irrespective of the stinker she is in.

The crazy side of the 90-member Hollywood Foreign Press is back in force. You can always count on the Musical/Comedy category to deliver Golden Globes nomination surprises, but don’t expect Sia’s directing debut “Music” (February 12; 29 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) to turn up on Oscar nominations morning March 15. Ditto Oscar longshots Dev Patel (“The Personal History of David Copperfield”), Anya Taylor-Joy (“Emma”), Rosamund Pike (“I Care a Lot”), James Corden (“The Prom”), Andy Samberg (“Palm Springs”), Jared Leto (“The Little Things”), and Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton” isn’t Oscar eligible).
The Golden Globes will be broadcast live February 28 with comediennes Amy Poehler and Tina Fey hosting on two coasts, from the usual Globes hub at the Beverly Hilton and New York’s Rainbow room, respectively. Oscar Best Picture eligibility ends February 28. That means this year’s Globe winners have a tiny window to influence Oscar voting.

The nominations are in for the 78th Annual Golden Globe awards — and so are the reactions from those who were lucky enough to get a nod.
As per usual, many newly minted nominees said they were “honored,” “grateful,” “thrilled” and “proud” on Wednesday after the nominations were announced — including writer Peter Morgan, actresses Emma Corrin and Andra Day and Sacha Baron Cohen, who picked up nominations for both “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” But some are also “overwhelmed,” “humbled” and “speechless” after receiving recognition from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association this year.
See statements from all the overwhelmed nominees below. Readers can find the full list of 2021 Golden Globes nominations here.
Gary Oldman, Best Actor – Drama, “Mank”
“Despite a stressed pandemic year, there is a comfort of sorts in embracing traditions, perhaps it is a hopeful sign that we will get out of this eventually.
