Condition of Return is a really good, gripping indie film about a controversial subject. The film follows two law enforcement officials as they investigate a woman who kills eleven people in a Church shooting. As disturbing details come to light, it begins to appear that the Devil is closer than you think.
There is an eerie feeling to the movie because the story successfully meshes the Devil to a mass shooting. With such shootings now commonplace across the US, the premise could be truer than you think. Dean Cain, Natasha Henstridge and AnnaLynne McCord all give great performances which elevate the script. The intense and twisty nature of the story demands intense performances from the cast who do not disappoint. It is good to see both Cain and Henstridge in more features after they disappeared from our screens not too long ago. Natasha Henstridge has a knack for playing potent villains and here, her villainous turn is both menacing and memorable.
The grimdark cinematography is completely in line with the tone of the story while the violence is both shocking and brutal. Such dark and gloomy crime thrillers with a religious aspect are now a rarity in Hollywood these days so it is great to see a story that dives into the Devil-ish aspects of how crimes are committed.
Tense, gripping and potent, Condition of Return is a well made crime thriller that ticks all the right boxes. The film has an impressive cast, an interesting premise and good execution all of which combines into a visceral experience.
