Rust Creek (2018)
8/10
Very entertaining thriller.
25 July 2021
Good acting all around, a lot of twists and turns and overall a very enjoyable film with likeable protagonists and a refreshing change from other 'hunted whilst lost in the woods' flicks that rely on gore and jump scares.

Can't help but laugh at some of the bad reviews here. "Why didn't she just turn around and go back the way she came rather than driving into the woods?"

Because then the film would be 10 minutes long and boring you pleb.

Creep 2 (2017)
5/10
Not as brilliant as the first.
25 November 2020
I was so excited about Creep 2. After giving the first one a 9/10, it's fair to say that I had high hopes for the sequel.

To be honest, I'm probably being too harsh but there is a particular issue that I have with the film in general. I didn't find it believable. In contrast to the first, which I found to have a likeable and relatable protagonist, I found the protagonist in this one to be somewhat annoying. She doesn't seem to react in believable ways to Mark Duplass' character from time to time, and didn't earn my sympathy like Aaron from the first film did.

Mark Duplass is brilliant as the Creep once again. I liked a lot about his role, but found the story to be a little long winded in general. Whereas the first film is spread out over a few days, this one takes place within one night. This kind of takes away the suspense a little for me. There isn't any stalking, there aren't any little messages being conveyed as to might what be coming... you just kind of wait to see what unfolds. And the problem is... throughout the movie... not very much.

I understand that they're trying to develop the two lead characters and create more of a psychological aspect to the film, but when the lead character is actually quite dislikable and annoyingly smug throughout the film, you kind of just want Mark Duplass to kill her and get the film over with already.

That being said, it certainly isn't awful. Duplass does another fantastic job of playing a deranged creep. It's probably worth watching just for his performance, but it's a shadow of the first one in my opinion.

Creep (I) (2014)
9/10
A little known masterpiece.
25 November 2020
Creep is an incredible experience. To say that I loved this film wouldn't be an exaggeration. It's probably the cleverest found footage film I've ever seen and by quite a long way too.

There're only two characters on screen during the film, but they're so developed and well-written, you're kept occupied with their story throughout. Mark Duplass plays Josef, a man who has an inoperable brain tumour who hires Aaron, a young struggling videographer to make a video diary for his unborn son, whom he is unlikely to ever meet. As you can expect from the moment you meet the character, Josef isn't quite who he seems.

The film relies on clever plot twists and great acting rather than excessive gore and violence to create suspense which is so rare for a horror movie these days. The ending is fantastic and the whole film just felt like such a joy to watch. It's truly a special film and I urge anyone to watch it and see what they think.

Starry Eyes (2014)
8/10
What would you do??
25 November 2020
A story about a young girl who will do whatever it takes to succeed to be a star.

I'd never heard of this film before, and only really chose to watch it because it was mentioned on a 'best of Prime Video' list. Normally all I take from these lists is that the film will be at least watchable, especially if I've heard nothing about it prior. However, I was pleasantly surprised at what was in store for me.

That's not to say the film is pleasant. It isn't. At all. It's actually a body horror film even if it isn't billed as such. The effects are convincing and the make-up is exceptional. There is also a lot of violence in the second half of the movie and it actually hits home rather hard, as in contrast to the surreal nature of the film itself, it is realistic and brutal.

The film is very well written and, without wanting to spoil anything, is a metaphor on what I expect an aspiring actor's life to be like. Something I find interesting about the film is that the protagonist is never forced into any of the horror that unfolds before us. She chooses to do it all. Admittedly she doesn't know exactly what she's getting herself into from the get-go... but isn't this what life is like for all of us?

The film isn't perfect. It has a slow start and requires a bit of patience for you to get through the first thirty minutes or so. I also feel that it sets a premise that you kind of want to know more about at the end of the movie. I guess that means that a sequel is a good idea?

Overall an enjoyable horror film for those who can handle a bit of violence and body deformation and well worth a watch. Just keep reminding yourself half an hour through that it hasn't really started yet.

Revenge (II) (2017)
7/10
The clue is in the title.
25 November 2020
Revenge doesn't do anything out of the ordinary. There is absolutely nothing here that hasn't been done before. It is the same script for every other rape and revenge movie ever made but set in a desert. However, what it does, it does extremely well.

Revenge doesn't need to overly develop its characters. There are three antagonists who are bad and then your initially hopeless protagonist whose horrific experiences develop her into an action hero. Actually, this is part of the movie that I feel is done particularly well. A lot of these types of films go a bit overboard and turn their protagonist into a twisted sadist and it makes it difficult to empathise with such a character. Jen's transformation is almost perfect and she still keeps a sense of vulnerability throughout the movie. The antagonists are also all very dislikable and you find yourself wanting to see them suffer.

The film is beautifully made. The camerawork is excellent and the music is brilliant. It's pretty violent. Definitely not as gory as some others in the genre but there is a lot of blood and close ups of injuries. Probably not one for the squeamish.

There are plot-holes and also a lot of goofs which are pretty noticeable. I found myself looking through the goofs section on IMDb and immediately recognising them. Normally I'm not one to pick up on things like this, but they're clear to see. I get why some of them are there, but it does detract from the experience slightly.

It's hard to give it higher than a 7 because it's so unoriginal and does have some small flaws, but at the same time, it's probably the best revenge movie I've seen. Really worth a watch if the genre appeals to you.

A really clever and different take on an unoriginal story
24 November 2020
Behind the Mask is a film that's taken me more than a day to decide a fair reviewing score for, since it's such a wonderful idea that would be very difficult to execute perfectly. It sometimes feels kind of silly when it should feel serious, and yet sometimes feels a little too serious when it should feel silly, if you get me.

I enjoyed the movie. I thought it was funny and loved the actors. They truly do a fantastic job of portraying the individual personalities of the in-depth characters. Nathan Baesel plays an oddly likeable slasher, who treats his status like a job. Remarkably, he hasn't done much work outside of this film, which is kind of sad because he reminded me very much of a villainous Jim Carrey, but without ever seeming TOO over the top. He does a brilliant job of getting you to enjoy watching his character develop, making you care about him, whilst never letting you forget that he is a dangerous man.

The script is funny and for the most part well written. There were a few little bits here and there that I felt it could've done without as they made the plot feel a little uneven in bits, but for the most part it was enjoyable to watch. The film never really drags. It's also interesting how the first half of the film is presented as a mockumentary, whereas the second half is your standard climactic horror movie, where you get to see the cameramen who filmed the first half of the film. I enjoyed the transition and haven't seen many similar instances of this.

The film unfortunately suffers a little from obviously fake special effects and definitely won't appeal to anyone looking for a scare. It's comical all the way through and never takes itself too seriously. The ending feels a little incomplete and to be honest, kind of predictable. However, it's a good watch for anyone looking for a funny film with an interest in the classic slasher movies as the jokes and dialogue will be relatable to fans of these. Just don't expect to be frightened.

The Beach House (II) (2019)
6/10
Generic but effective Epidemic Horror
23 November 2020
There's not much in The Beach House that hasn't been done before, but in this case it's been done well for the most part and it's a decent horror movie that keeps you intrigued as you follow a young couple's weekend in a Beach House interrupted by a deadly epidemic that emerges from the sea.

The acting is good as are the effects and camera work. The fog looks a little cheap for reasons that I can't quite put my finger on, but the effects of the epidemic look quite impressive and are somewhat squeamish. It certainly doesn't feel as low budget as I suspect it is.

However, it is extremely generic. Nothing in this movie hasn't been seen before and whilst it definitely isn't bad, you'll hardly be telling your friends that they simply HAVE to watch it. Definitely worth a look if you enjoy the genre though.

Strange one...
17 November 2020
An enjoyable but somewhat unbalanced horror anthology film, I think it's unlikely that you'll like or dislike all of the five tales in this one as they are so radically different in style and even in genre. It's a somewhat weird bunch of mini films to group together, but I guess that makes it intriguing and keeps you watching.

I personally found it all a bit disjointed. The first film is somewhat postmodern and quite comedic, with over the top gore and a fun storyline which I really enjoyed and then the second is a weird body horror where to be honest... not much happens. Third off we have an interesting one with demons and exorcisms and things... where the comedy shines through once again in the over the top action scenes... and then the fourth is... well... actually an interesting and well acted story about a woman who seems to be losing her grip on reality. Lastly we have a kind of nonsensical generic ghost story that I really didn't care for. Worst one of the bunch for me.

All these are then tied together with the subplot of a haunted theatre run by Mickey Rourke who is... well... Mickey Rourke.

Worth a watch I suppose... and it wouldn't surprise me if others preferred different stories to me. It's unlikely to impress you with all of its tales, but at the same time you're quite likely to find one you like.

Downrange (2017)
6/10
Suspenseful and gripping, but a little drawn out.
17 November 2020
Downrange is one of those films that is actually quite unique, even though the basic premise is extremely simple. Set in one location throughout, six friends are stranded on the side of the road as a ruthless sniper watches, picking them off one by one. That's it, that's your storyline. What then follows is an hour and a half of what is a mostly gripping horror/thriller as the friends try to find a way out of their predicament.

Too many movies try to have a certain set cast of characters... (the leader, the stupid one, the clever one, the bully etc...) but this film doesn't focus too much on the characters' personalities and I think it's better for it. These are everyday people who are reacting believably to the scenario they find themselves in. The director does a fantastic job of making the open country road seem like a claustrophobic prison and I for one was watching with no idea what the characters could do in their predicament and found myself drawn into a clever film and wanting to know how they were going to escape. Fans of gore will also be happy here, as the shooting is depicted in graphic detail.

That being said, the film isn't perfect. It does drag a little in the middle when the director does try and inject a little backstory in some of the characters. I also personally didn't think much of the ending. Some of the actors are a lot better than the others and the weaker performances do stand out unfortunately.

So is it essential viewing? Probably not, but there are far worse ways to spend 90 minutes of your life so if you like the sound of the plot, give it a go. You shouldn't be disappointed.

Big Nothing (2006)
10/10
My Favourite Film
9 November 2020
Big Nothing is a fast paced comedy that is truly a joy to behold. Simon Pegg plays an American con-artist who enrols hopeless family man David Schwimmer to help him blackmail a Reverend who they discover has been up to some no good. Plans then obviously go wrong and this snowballs into a very clever and inventive film that keeps hitting you with twists that are always unexpected but never feel unrealistic. The characters are all brilliantly casted and the script is hilarious. Add on top of this a fantastic soundtrack and you have a hidden gem and one of the most underrated films of all time.

Prevenge (2016)

Fun British Comedy Slasher Film
7 November 2020
Watched this late on a Friday night to kill some time before I could sleep knowing nothing about it other than 'I enjoyed Sightseers' and was very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

Alice Lowe has done a fantastic job with this project as it is very well written, well directed and well cast. All the acting is very good and it doesn't come across as being a low budget film, despite only having a modest £100000. The concept (pregnant woman goes on killing spree under the command of her unborn child) sounds very corny, but is actually extremely well done and doesn't come across as cringeworthy at any point. The writing is funny and quite suspenseful and the characters are interesting, realistic and I found myself sympathising with the more likeable ones.

Overall I would recommend watching this film if you enjoy traditional black British humour. You shouldn't be disappointed.
