Dead Places (2021)
Refreshing break from what were accustomed to from Hollywood
Really enjoyed it. The twist in the end ties in really well with the first episode, although was expecting the ending to answer a few questions since the story was steering us in a certain direction; Will's inspiration for a new book. Overall I loved the actors. This is the second horror series I've watched from SA (first being DAM) and I love that the stories are grounded with an African perspective.
Jiva! (2021)
Certainly hope that was not the last we saw of Jiva!
There's a lot going on for the show: the dances, the drama that keeps unfolding, the unexpected, the predictable. I was left wanting more. I'm really appreciating the different expressions in our continent. Good job SA.
Hope there will be a season 2.
Sweet Tooth (2021)
Did not expect to love it this much!
It's a really compelling story. Loved every bit of it. Gives you a number of things to reflect on in terms of the things that matter in life. Hoping for a second season coz that ending!
Shadow (2019)
Really enjoyed it
Binged it in a day! Loved the action and the story. Plus the coming relief was perfectly timed. Although I do wish the fight between Shadow and Cyrus could have been grand. I felt like it was over just when things had started to heat up.
Cruella (2021)
Really enjoyed it
The cast was phenomenal! Also loved Emma Thompson's performance.
Doctor Sleep (2019)
Very thrilling
Really enjoyed the thrills I got from this! I can't wait to re-watch this and understand the things I might have missed.
Jupiter's Legacy (2021)
Really wish they could have stuck to one timeline
I felt the show had something fresh to offer. What I was expecting from the show after watching episode 1 wasn't what I got. Instead, I got an entire backstory of how the superheroes got their powers. I felt the entire easeon hinged itself on the backstory instead of what the first episode had already sarted to set up; the crumbling relationship between the original superheroes and the young superheroes. But this is just my opinion.
I agree with some reviewers about confusing timelines which result in making the show underwhelming. Really hope is a season 2 is on the way, that things will be clearer.
The OA (2016)
I can't believe Netflix cancelled it!
This is a very unique story. Right from the start all my predictions were thwarted and I liked it! Kept me very engaged. I love how it brings up the need to think about the spiritual side of life and not in a religious way.
Shadow and Bone (2021)
Great show
Great show! The pacing was great. The story was captivating. However, I felt the first episode could have done more to set up the world of the show. I had to watch till episode 3 to start putting the show's world into perspective.
The rest of the episodes from espidoe 4 do an amazing job at unveiling the story.
Hope they do a second season.
Altered Carbon (2018)
Amazing show
Really loved this show. Binged both season 1 and 2. The themes raised in this show left me thinking a lot about humanity in general. A lot of 'what if' questions were running in my mind. I've always wondered what would happen if we actually had power over death. At least this is one way of answering this question. All the limitations of humanity somewhow feel like they are for our own good. Also, didn't know the series was based off a book. Will definitely read the books now.
Requiem (2018)
Keeps you doubting ever character
At first, I couldn't stand how the first 3 episodes were paced (mostly be side at the time I was a bit mentally drained and was looking for something that could take my mind off things), but then the last 3 episodes really delivered the thrills. Loved how I kept doubting every prediction I had made, even when I was right.
Would recommend to watch when you are not mentally exhausted.
The Irregulars (2021)
Some comments provide insight to fully understanding the show
Great show! It's an interesting take on Sherlock Holmes, although the music really threw me off. But after going through some of the comments, I realized it was very much intentional. At least this keeps me at ease, even though I kept wondering why the music just couldn't depict the world the show was already set on.
New Amsterdam (2018)
Warm overall tone
Love it so far. There are a number of characters that are loveable, like Dr. Iggy and there are moments where it got so emotional 😭. Really love how the show tries to enforce empathy. As an audience, I feel like I can relate to some of the characters.
Hope this remains the case since I'm yet to finish season 1.
UPDATE:
Finished season 2 and I'm invested in the story! Can't wait for Netflix to update with season 3.
Crime and Justice (2021)
Not your typical Crime drama
I like that this show presents issues that affect Kenya currently and it gives the audience an opportunity to experience the justice system through the eyes of detectives Makena and Silas, even if that means that the story sometimes doesn't have a happy ending.
Also, so proud of our local actors! 🇰🇪
The Third Day (2020)
I'll have to agree with most of the reviewers
Gets very confusing from the 4th episode. Almost wish it had ended at the 3rd episode.
The performances are spot on though.
The Outsider (2020)
This one is a must re-watch!
Kept me at the edge of my seat, guessing each and every time, trying to piece up the bigger picture.
Dam (2021)
Really unique storyline
It has a very unique storyline and really interesting. I got horrified in the end, which is what I came for.
Queen Sono (2020)
A great African story I can relate to
Loved everything about this series; the acting, the storyline, plus the appearance of a Kenyan actor! Really hope Netflix does a season 2 for this.
The One (2021)
Binged it in a day
The show gave me a lot to think about in terms of finding 'the one.' Does the one actually exist? Is there anything like the perfect match?
Also love how it explores the various ways scientific breakthroughs can be used for harm and the ethics of going about scientific research.
I do have to agree with some reviewers about the show giving out too much too soon.
Behind Her Eyes (2021)
Enjoyed the show
Love how the show just keeps you guessing. I was glued all the time from episode 3. It starts of a bit slow though, but it certainly picks up and delivers such a twist!
Monica (2018)
Amazing show
This is the second Kenyan TV series that has really impressed me (the first being Kona). I binged season 1 for an entire day. Brenda Wairumu doesn't disappoint. Plus the story is really captivating albeit a bit predictable, but still fun. Hope the momentum continues on in the rest of the seasons.
Lusala (2019)
Mind blowing film!
This film blew my mind! Loved everything about it. The writing, the acting, the directing, the editing.
I was so hooked to this film!
Plan B (2019)
Enjoyable film
I enjoyed the film a lot. The cast was amazing although the editing was a bit jarring, especially the time jumps. I felt more could have been done to ease those moments.
