Power Book II: Ghost (2020)
Total waste of time not worthy of season 3
This was super hard to watch. Full of stupidity. Full of holes. Full of inaccurate law. Just a huge flop. Bad acting and actors. Stupid dialog. End it now. Biggest waste of time. 2 seasons is enough of this crap, end it now and put any extra money into book 4 with Tommy. Book 4 is the best. This one is just a total waste. Plus the actors all suck. A lot of it doesn't even make sense. The timelines are all screwed. The money, the product, the timelines are completely inaccurate. This series never should have been made. Tariq is such a bad actor, please don't put him in any more TV or movies, he should find a day job in a different business other than acting, cause he can't act.
Katla (2021)
Just another Icelandic series that shows the Icelanders as 'Morons'.
When writers can't write they make the characters pick up the slack and the best way to do that is to make the characters seem like complete idiots.....or at least that is my assumption after watching this series and how completely moronic and idiotc the characters have been written. This is one series you'll be screaming at the tv for them to stop being so stupid.....but bad writing is why the characters are so dumb....they've been written that way in order to breed some drama that otherwise is missing, like what you should probably do to this series.....miss it. Do yourself a favor and miss this one. Rates just a 6 for 'watchable'.
War of the Worlds (2019)
Can't believe there's a season two
This series was barely watchable at best and season one only rated 6.x collectively. So how on earth does this series qualify for a season two? It's slow, boring, not interesting, and should have been canceled. Don't waste your time....

Price of Faerie Tales (2019)
Hard hitting emotional drama
Smartly written, brilliantly directed and acted emotional drama that explores relationships between friends and family, dealing with mental illness, and learning to live with the choices we make in life.
Evil (2019)
Blah blah blah
A religious 'X-Files'.....don't waste your time. Storylines are forced, incoherent, and boring. Just more seemingly smart people doing implausible stupid things in order to create forced drama. Rates barely 1 star.
The Woman in the Window (2021)
Just watchable....not much better!!
Sleeper snorefest and just plain utterly forced drama. Nothing to see or miss in this one. An agoraphobic woman sees a woman murdered and nobody believes her. Sort of 'Rear Window' inspired maybe but without great acting, writing, and too many other holes to poke fun through. This might have been more watchable had the script been better written. Just another poorly written script with forced drama and implausible scenarios. Rated 6 for just 'watchable '.
Stowaway (2021)
What a waste of good talent....
I could not keep my eyes open through this film. Slow and boring and way to fake for my engineers brain. I should have turned it off after 10 minutes but kept rewinding after I dozed off to see what I missed, hoping it was something good or the movie would get better. All to no avail. Total waste of time and talent. Rated 5 for barely watchable. Sorry!
Resgate (2019)
Don't waste your time!
Hopefully this review/warning will help others to steer clear of this disaster of a movie. As I was watching this film I couldn't help but think that none of these characters are real actors because none of them could act. The plot and premise of the film is pretty straight forward and almost workable if it wasn't spoiled by bad writing, terrible acting, laughable characters, hard to believe premise, and stupid over usage of the 'n' word. Everytime one of these on screen idiots opened his mouth they used the 'n' word like a bunch of wannabe gangsta rappers....laughable at best. The basic plot....a man gets out of prison after four years and returns home to baby and momma. He finds out his mother died and her house is foreclosed unless $30k is paid. The ex-con has a job, a wife with a house, a baby, and yet he returns to crime because he wants to keep his dead mommas house, why? So from that scenario the ex-con goes back to his old ways falling in with old crime buddies and its all down hill from there. No redemption at all anywhere. The producers make every character seem as stupid and dumb as dirt. Dont waste your time with this one. Rated a 5 for barely watchable.
La trêve (2016)
This is fair at best.
This series is only fair. It has pretty good acting. The story works too. It's got more to do with the writing that makes it only fair. I see this with a lot of foreign crime shows that the writers make the police out to be bumbling idiots and in this case, bumbling idiots the writers did make the police. As if the crimes are too easy to solve or something, so the writers had to make the police idiots in order to draw out the drama. American crime shows dont make the cops out to be idiots, they just make everyone do completely implausible and out of character things that nobody would ever do no matter the circumstances.....both are just lazy writing. This series rates 7 for fair.
NOS4A2 (2019)
S02 fell off a cliff
S01 was fair and scored a 7 but s02 fell off a cliff and just got stupider than stupid. The characters all seemed to just do things that are a complete and utter waste. Everything is so contrived....way worse than s01. Stupid characters doing stupid things that the writers of the show think everyone will believe. In the end the losers are the investors because this show needs to be cancelled now. Watch s01 maybe but dont waste your time on s02. Its the kind of unbelievable scenarios and scenes that you just sit in front of the screen and scream at the stupidity being shoved at you. Original rated 7, for fair....but after s02 rating now a 5, for barely watchable. Don't waste your time.
Host (2020)
Neck hair raising creepy jumpfest
This was one creepy ass scare flick. It may have been a bit long to start, but once it did the creepfest really got going. Mostly jump scares but some of the best I've seen in such abundance. Neck hair raising creepy. Worth watching at least once. Good cast, great stunts/effects, maybe a bit long, decent script.
Babyteeth (2019)
Never cried so hard in my life...a parents perspective.
Yeah this film from down under is funny, quirky, heart-warming, and heart-breaking and the on screen chemistry and electricity between the young lovers is so remarkable and unlike any love story ever put to film. The actors were phenomenal and absorbing and played their parts perfectly well. I was laughing one scene and crying the next.
So 'Babyteeth' is primarily a love story on one hand and a tragic family drama on the other with a bunch of comic circumstances and scenarios thrown in and juxtaposed with the love, loss, addiction, disfunction, and dieing portrayed in the film. Please don't think it's dark comedy or similar. This is serious film first. Direction, casting, acting, everything was perfect and spot on.
This film will elicit a lot of emotions....happy at times , sad others, and then flat out sadness sorrow and crying at the end. The plot/theme is nothing new but the way the director kept each scene simple and focused and kept dialog minimized and the chemistry and character development and interaction maximized, breathed new life and not cliché.
Take the time to see this picture....it won't disapoint. The subject matter may be bleak but you have never seen it like this and as tearful as it may be, it's so worth watching and experiencing the emotions for yourself. Rate 10/10 for 'off the richter'.
Normal People (2020)
Heart warming, heart wrenching, heart felt masterpiece
Season one of 'Normal People' was a total complete phenomenal masterpiece from start to finish. I binge watched it last night and loved every minute, absorbed every word, and laughed and cryed with the main characters for 6+ hours. A work of art. Start to finish everything in between was well written, directed, acting was fantastic, the closing sound tracks were totally relevant to the drama, and more and more. Could have gone with 1 hour format and still had plenty of material to work with but 30 minute eps kept the pace rolling along at a good rate. Plenty more I could heap praise on but I'll keep it short. Rate 10 for 'off the richter'!
Altered Carbon (2018)
10 stars S01, 6 stars S02
Not the best way to follow up a supreme season 1, but season 2 of Altered Carbon was somewhat of a let down. Incoherent story about characters I have no investment in nor care all that much about. A lot of new faces in S02 and one main one missing....Joel K. and not sure if Anthony M. was really up to the task. I've liked him in plenty of supporting roles but this lead was a bit of a stretch. Worth a watch but not if something better to do. A real disappointment from S01.
Systemsprenger (2019)
Very REAL Portrayal of very REAL Conditions
If this film is hard to stomach, or sit through, or you had to close your eyes and hold your ears through tough parts.....then this film succeeded in its main task of showcasing very real and difficult to treat psychiatric conditions. It can be a little rough to watch at times but also heart warming too so it won't be a total downer the entire time. If you find this film a worthy watch then check out 'Mommy' 2014 to see how this progresses. I rated this an 8, for good, but you'll have to see for yourself to be a fair judge.
Boris and the Bomb (2019)
There is a point to this film.....just too hard to watch and find it
This seemed like a good premise and creative plot.....but was painful to watch. Maybe that's what the director and producers wanted but the mix of comic slapstyle and serious dramatic scenarios along with seemingly amateurish actors and acting doesn't seem like good shtick. The whole film was just so amateurish and made no attempt to hide it.....or offer anything in general worth seeing. I won't spoil the plot, you'll have to find that out yourself if you can sit through the entire piece. Good luck. So this rates just a 5, for barely watchable, a generous score and just above a 4, unwatchable. Nice effort though.
Get Shorty (2017)
Well that ended sort of abruptly
Is this show cancelled now after an abrupt ending S03 just 7 eps in? I think it's a pretty decent series, enough humor mixed with great cast with semi-serious plot and plenty of twists and turns. I would say that all the strong arming, extortion, and deal making was getting a little over the top and implausible but still a fun watch with the main characters swimming and circling each other like a pool full of sharks. Season 3 was going along fairly well but it must be over because that was a crap wrap in my opinion. Still I'm giving this a 9, for excellent, based on S01 and 2 being so strong. PS: the Marcus Zane 'Phat Vapes' YouTube video segment was hillarious....'do you think he has a manager'?
Waves (2019)
Slow meandering journey of a families love, hardship, and reconciliation
I'll start by saying that slow doesn't mean boring as this film was anything but. The script was well written and structured to give you everything you needed to ride along and feel the highs and lows of life these characters were dealing with from start to finish. The dialog was very engaging and realistic to what real life teens and parents deal with every day....especially now in the digital age.
The main story of this film is every parents nightmare and nobody can accurately say this can never happen to them....it happens, so be prepared. Few families are epuipped to handle the tragedy that takes place here no matter which side of it you're on. Like a wrecking ball that destroys everything in its path equally affecting everyone connected to the heart of the centerline.....the dead are mourned, guilty are convicted, and both sides of families and friends are left in the aftermath to deal with the uncertainty of life.
This film conveyes powerful messages of love, family bonds, coming of age teens, the pressure of succeeding, failing, or just being average, the pressure of parental guidance vs control, grieving tragedy and how to cope and move forward, dealing with personal guilt, dealing with loss of a child, remorse, shame, and how to reconcile the loss of life, rebuilding family bonds after picking up the broken pieces, and much more and does it in a very subtle moving way that really hits hard on every chord of being.
This is a good movie and should be seen by everyone with children and by teen children of age to watch this movie and by anyone else who interacts with both. As such, I rated this film an 8, for good, so take the time to watch this before it's too late.
Bait (2019)
Subtle but mesmerizing film that will stick in your head
Black and white is back....'Bait' is a fine piece of visually stunning filmwork.....a bloody work of art. It also includes a cast of many first timers that pulled their weight like big Hollywood stars.
A subtle story with a huge message. As a coastal Floridian USA, I know exactly what this film is talking about, only this film says it much better. I'm not even sure I have the intellect or the vocabulary to offer a satisfactory review or critique of this film.
A simple story with complex characters. Dialog is sparse but adequate and spoken visually with few words. The old time black and white ambiance is the perfect foil to portray the flawed nature of character.
A love story shown from many perspectives. A one time fishing village now in flux and weathering out the new reality. A fisherman unwavering and unwilling to change with the times. I widowed father doing what he needs to survive for his son. The city folk looking for peace and quiet weekend. The Inn keepers building a summer business. Teenagers coming to age and looking for relationships and purpose. The bar, and owner at the center of town serving her patrons and trying to stay afloat. They all revolve each other as each character reaches for what they believe is most important. Tragedy strikes and we see what's truly the most important.
This is a must see film and direction, location, content, casting, script, audio, visual, media, production, editing, etc, etc....were all well defined and executed. I rated a 9, excellent, although this type of film might not be everyone's cup of tea.
Zombieland: Double Tap (2019)
Disappointing to say the least
Well as much as I liked the first Zombieland film and was eagerly looking forward to Double Tap, this second installment of the Zombieland franchise, it failed horribly to live up to the first in almost every instance. Yes zombie films are usually shallow blood fests with thin plots and polar opposite characters trying to survive their circumstances together in close quarters trusting each other with their lives and then throw in the reality check that brings on the drama or comedy or romance.....for at the heart of every great film is a love story and this one is no different. The problem lies with a completely rediculous plot, rushed script, and unbelievable characters. Even a lot of the dialog seemed forced and out of character. The actors tried their best but the script was a very heavy weight to lift no matter how talented they are. So while this was still a fun watch, I had to rate it only a 6, which is just a watchable movie on my scale. I know sequels usually dont stand a chance and this one falls right into place.....far below the first.
Imprisoned (2018)
Barely watchable rubbish
How does one describe and give review of such an obviously poor movie.....well here goes. First off, this was basically a love story wrapped in hatred and jealousy and topped off with revenge plus a tad bit of guilt and atonement...of course I don't want to spoil the overall plot. It's a common recipe that's been done countless times and sometimes it works brilliantly and sometimes it works out like this film did.....very poor. The script was full of holes, implausable scenarios, unnatural dialog, hollow characters, and forced drama. The action, special effects, and stunt work were unrealistic and almost laughable. The overall production value was worse than a made for TV movie. To finish off, this film was led by some fairly decent acting talent, which was the only reason I watched to begin with....but the script was so bad that no amount of acting talent could help. In fact, I'm really surprised some of them even signed on to this project, they must not have read the script or something. Anyway, I rated this film a 5, which is barely watchable on my scale, so don't waste your time.
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
Super heros with heart, drama, and pain
This series starts out a bit slow but quickly kicks into gear and brings the mystery, intrigue, action, drama, character development, special effects and direction by the end of episode one and forward. It can get a little bogged down in back stories and inner-family drama for an action super hero series, but if you can stick through those segments the overall plot and story along with enough action and special effects should be enough to hold your attention and make you like. The characters all have their own stories and personal drama going on as subplots and they're also all involved in the overall main plot. The acting was excellent, camera work, special effects, and directing were as well. The musical score was perfectly timed and matched to the in sequence of action taking place on screen as a very creative use and blend of sound and visual stimuli. My main complaint occured in the last episode where I thought a focal characters inner conflict seemed juvenile and way over blown and dramatic. Hard to believe someone is going to just stand still and let there throat be cut too. Also, throughout series, the writers made drama where none was needed and forced it along by not allowing the characters to simply communicate fully and accuratly with each orher. I guess that's how the writers thought they had to write in order to intensify the drama but what happens is the characters look inept, juvenile, and not very realistic. For the audience, it makes the character interactions in the series annoying and implausible. At any rate, the extraordinary powers genre is getting more and more crowded each year but this series is a top contender and looks like it is going to stay there.
Extracurricular Activities (2019)
Tightly woven dark comdramady
This was a fun film with a very well written script that will keep you entertained till the very end. The plot was simple and the acting was excellent. Even though some scenes were sort of predictable there was enough twists and turns to keep it smart and interesting. Definitely worth a watch as I rated it a solid 7, for very fair.
Castle Rock (2018)
Season 2 is way better than season 1
I almost gave up on this series during season 1 as it didn't have a very cohesive plot and was a bit of a snorefest. I liked the way Kings books (adapted from) make up all the plots and subplots but there wasn't enough scarey horror thriller mystery genre stuff in the first season. Well that all changed in season 2 and thankfully so and even I almost missed watching it but decided to give it another try anyway....and thankfully I did. This season 2 blended Salems Lot into the mix, although an adaptation, and really turned on the firehose of what this series should deliver on.....plenty of suspense, murder, thriller, mystery, psychosis, satanism, witchery, raising the dead, body snatching, etc, etc, King style. So be prepared for a way better story, better actors and acting, and at a much faster pace than s01. So if you liked s01, you should love s02....so much so it might even gain an extra star rating.
