Cuando acecha la maldad (2023)
Putting all horror genres was a bad idea
The more horror movies I watch, the more I realise not every horror movie is for you. I like suspense/thirller type of horrors, with mounting tension, and mystery to solve. Preferably a ghost one, may be with a demon, some faimly secret etc, give me the Nun or Conjuring 2 or Insidious any day. Slashers pretty fast had became a nope for me, I'm not a fan of the weird ones aka Heridetary or Spoonful of Sugar as they are both scary enough for me just annoying. I can appreciate the acting, the storyline and the execution in those other horror types, but this... heck this was a mess.
What a mess!
Putting all type of geners was such a bad idea!
Like it's gore but not scary just disgusting, there is talk of possession but it's just talk no explanation, there are scare jumps but by that point everything is exhausting, there is zombie thing but by that point I was feeling more like laughing at this silly idea of putting another type of horror to the mess than anything. The lore is weak and doesn't make sense and there is no explanation not conclusion. The only positive thing was the main characters, the brothers, grandma was cool too. And ingotta five, the film is not withholding punches, the horrific things start haopeing from the start, but i think id orefer a prooer tension built up.
Generally speaking the movie is ...exhausting, disgusting and disjointed. And the ending is lacking.
Dune: Part Two (2024)
Sequel surpassed part 1, and it was a pretty good thing in the first place
Just saw a Marathon of part 1 and 2. I loved part 1, it has such a quiet, slow, philosophical feeling to it. The second one is more action, more pacy, woth fabulous charactersiations, part 1 was great but 2 is even so much better. I loved the funny delivery, many people laughed outloud in the cinema. Also the acting, the scenery, the music. A masterpiece. I also loved that there weren't prolonged sequences of fights or anything, in a way it's a movie of vignettes that are well executed, well conected and make logical and easy to follow story. And I speak it as a person that has not read the series. Finally, when I realised it's already the second part of the film and we are nearing the end, all I was able to think was, it's going to be a looooong wait for part 3. Because I want it here NOW, LOL.
12/10 for me.
Dark Windows (2023)
A solid supsene/horrific movie.
It was a fourth movie in a Halloween marathon at local cinema, and it did very well in comparison to the others. I wasn't bored, the story/mystery, though hinted gradually and solvable, was engaging to keep me focused on the movie.
The acting was good, I felt for the characters - each of the main actors did a great job of bringing out the characters they played. I felt for them, I sympathised with them, I was sad for them in the end at the end.
There were good jump scares, and tension filled scenes. The finale was surprising in a way, like it was obvious there was a voice mail record of the accident, but the mystery was who had gotten it.
The movie is a tale of dealing with tragedy, a take on dealing with grief and trauma. We have 4 different takes. And all of them painfully real and relatable. I liked it a lot.
The only plothole is, that the house belonged to one of the girl's grandmothers. She's not related to the killer. So then why and how did the killer know the layout of it? And could have prepared everything? That doesn't make sense.
Nevertheless, a good suspense, horrific movie.
All Fun and Games (2023)
Not good not bad
I saw it during a Halloween marathon at my local cinema. Wouldn't have chosen it otherwise. And that would have been better for me. Don't get me wrong, it's not that bad at all (I have seen way, way worse). It's just not my thing.
I'm not a fan of slasher movies and so I've chosen the Scary Marathon over the Bloody One at the cinema, and yet this was more slasher than anything. The story wasn't bad, although the film was short enough to not make you get engaged in the characters. Consider it at your own will if it's good or bad.
I did like the main character/killer acting though. He was creepy in a good way. The young boy actor was *way* more better in Bly Manor on Netflix than here though, I had been pretty impressed by him and the little girl back then, here he mostly annoyed me with his acting choices. Trying to be too intense. Not good at all.
The story is predictable, the finale as well. But the ending is sad, understandable, but sad. All in all a teen slasher for people who like this kind of movies. Not for me.
Spoonful of Sugar (2022)
Not a horror movie IMHO
I'd say this is not a horror movie, but a psychological thriller if anything.
As a horror it falls short. Not scary, no scare jumps, lots of disgusting scenes. No mounting tension or thick atmosphere. Oh, it was definitely creepy, but not scary at all. It's also painfully predictable with all it's twists: spoilers!!!
The first time we see the main character eating the watermelon over the swimming pool, I already knew she had bodies in there. Her killing others was also predictable. The boy killing nannies was spoiled at the very beginning when they mention the previous girl Samantha.
Oh well, just not my type of movie I suppose. I think it's like Midsommar or Hereditary. I don't find either of the movies scary. Nor do I like them. Just creepy and weird, and not worth a rewatch at all.
But! The acting was *very very* good here. All of the main actors did a fab job in the creepiness. But as a horror it's meh for me.
The Piper (2023)
A solid, tension filled horror possible spoilers.
Just saw it during a Halloween marathon at a local cinema in my country. A solid, tension filled horror. There are long passages of raising tension. A few scar jumps, if you like those, and the even a few gruesome scenes for slasher lovers (not me), but they are scary in a disgusting way.
The storyline doesn't drag necessarily, although it becomes predictable, especially the finale. And speaking about the finale, it was kinda weird, kind of discordant (oh, irony) in the way it was shot. But the characters and actors are engaging enough. Although the main character could have realised that she's gonna need her flute. Honestly, that was one moment I went almost out loud *finally!*.
All in all, quite a good movie, probably will revisit it again.
But, the best part is ...the music :) The main tune stays with you even after the movie ends. Hope that's not ominous or anything ;) (also waiting for the OST to be available on Spotify *fingers crossed*).
The Unholy (2021)
I think it's a great movie but hear me out why
So I gave the move 9/10 because I think it's a great movie but as horror it doesn't have lots of scary moments so one star less for that.
Why I think it's a great movie? Because I'm a Roman Catholic believer, a person of faith involved in her church and a person with a master degree in Roman Catholic theology who can look at her Church critically. And what I love about the movie is how it shows vices of my Church and how they can mislead into devil's hand.
Don't get me worng, I'm far from preaching about evil, but there is something about unheatly interest in Mary in my Church (She always point to her Son, thats the correct teaching of the Church, and she never points to herself, so that was one of the very first sings in the movie that something was wrong, I got chills when Alice leaves Holy Mass at the moment of consecration when we believe Jesus Himself comes to be with us, and Alice leaves in the middle of that importanto moment! The devil literally leads everyone form the church, from God, Himself).
Also the undoubtedly commercial part to the shrine! How many times have I seen it? People hoping to gain money from church related things, like those t-shirts, rosaries, 'tears of Alice'. There was also the Bishop with ambition and dreams of grandeur. I have seen this too in real life. Not everyone is like that but there are some like him.
And fianlly, all those people, with good intentions, hoping, wanting to believe in something, following the miracels, but lacking in critical thinking. I find it very accurate and in a way chilling. How easily we can get manipulated.
Those were very interesting points of the movie.
And I loved, simply loved the main character's journey. His character growth! From self serving to sacrificing. I had tears when he prayed at the end.
For me, as a person of faith, this movie is great.
A Perfect Enemy (2020)
A good psychological thriller
Someone wrote here that if you like MCU you will not like this, well, I love MCU and I loved this movie too. They are completely different type of movies and shouldn't be compared. But true, if you like one type you may probably not like the other.
This one is a slow burn, it's not about action but about about mystery. I solved one right away from one detail at the very beginning of the movie, and was surprised by the reveal anyway because my hunch was right but it was done with a twist. The movie doesn't have action packed scenes but it keeps you entertained and intrigued till the end. And, finally, the end. Kind of left me with a shiver. Tomasz Kot made a fabulous performance at the end. Chilling. Then again he won me over already in Bogowie.
The actress was also very good. Annoying for the main character and for the viewer and that was the point, she did fab job as well. I loved the music, and I hope soundtrack will be available.
