Killer Heat (2024)
Two shootouts (only minor spoilers)
This movie contains two shootouts, and both are absolutely ridiculous. None of them make any sense. But by then, I had already checked out, realizing that this film won't give a satisfying payoff.
Very predictable, in a way that you think "Oh, but it can't be THAT easy" and then it totally is. The voice over was annoying, even though I got that they were inspired by crime noir-films. All the flashbacks were so infuriating.
Also, for those who have seen it, why did he board the boat with the gentlemen singing? They didn't give him any information, and then he got a phone call that gave him the information he needed. What a strange scene.
The Mole: Nobody's Safe (2024)
Calling it
Spoiler for episode 1, but obv not a spoiler for the actual mole, since it's just episode one.
Somethings fishy with this challenge. Since the mole can't get eliminated, what would happen if the mole was selected as the leader? And if one of the intruders won, wouldn't the crew know for sure that the intruder is NOT the mole, since that person might as well not get in.
I'm guessing we'll get some answers in the finale, but for now, I think the mole is Melissa. She was right, the person that was the first to be nominated is also the person that the rest of the group voted on. That could have been the plan from the producers, that she would vote first, and set the agenda for the rest of the vote.
It could also be Neesh, and that the game was fixed, and the intruders was just extras. But this is risky, since it all came down to Ryans final shot, and if she would have missed and intruder would have won. But then, as i mentioned, wouldn't everyone know that the intruder clearly wasn't the mole for the rest of the game...
So yeah, i call Melissa after episode one! Let's go!!
Asteroid City (2023)
He has out-Wes-Anderson himself
Wes Anderson has always been a favorite director of mine. I have seen all his movies - but for me, the magic is gone.
I feel like The Grand Budapest Hotel was his masterpiece. Where every aspect that makes his films special was at its peak. The characters, the cast, the sets and, of course, the visuals were up to an 11. His craft was perfected - and it's one of my top 5 films of all time.
When I saw Isle of Dogs, I started to feel full. I felt like I had seen Wes's style a bit too much. And now this.
I feel that Asteroid City is pretty bland. The visuals are fantastic - but we've seen this all before. Instead of a compelling lead who has an interesting problem to solve - we get several bland characters who are quirky, and that's it. The acting is great though. But it's not that funny nor intriguing.
We were eight friends who saw this film together. Every one of us was pretty bored after a while. One of us really liked it though - but she had only seen 50% of a Wes Anderson film before. The rest of us felt... full.
We Have a Ghost (2023)
Bring back the 90 minute movie
It seems Netflix are determined to releasing new weekly movies that are mediocre and too long. This easily, just like other Netflix-films like the recent Jason Mamoa films Slumberland and Sweet Girl or the very recent Your place or mine, could have been 90 minutes. I'm confident I would have enjoyed this film much more if it was shorter - now I just feel numb.
Sometimes a light comedy can be just what I crave. It can have medium reviews but in a certain mood, a "medium" film can be perfect. But for two hours? Landons previous films in the Happy Death Day-franchise + Freaky are much more succesful in being enjoyable.
White Noise (2022)
One of the best original songs in years
I'm so bummed that it's unlikely that LCD Soundsystem will be Oscar nominated for their amazing end credits song New Body Rhumba. I hate it when an original songs only appears in the credits, like Taylor Swifts song Carolina from Where the crawdads sings, and then they use that to promote the film. But this? An absolutely amazing scene that made me smile til it hurt. Perfect ending!
The rest of the film? Before I saw it, i thought it looked tailor made for me. Marriage Story is one of my favorite films, and I love the cast. The first half of the trailer was amazing (I never see the second half of a trailer if I already know I'm going to see it, I want to go in fresh). The result was, however, not for me. I was completely zoned out in the third act. I wasn't expecting a straight forward disaster film - but I certainly didn't expect this.
The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 1: Stranger in a Strange Land (2021)
Needs its own Baby Yoda
...well not exactly but Mando had a clear goal and high stakes early - to keep Grogu safe. And Baby Yoda in episode 1 was a wonderful surprice. After this first episode I'm not pulled in.
Sex Education: Episode 6 (2021)
Love triangles... again
The show keeps insisting on love triangles. Last season we had 3-4 similar storylines and one of them (Meave, Otid and Isaac) just keeps going.
After last season I was excited to see an actual relationship between Adam and Eric but here we go again.. gets repetitive.
The 93rd Oscars (2021)
We stayed up all night for this??
Love the Oscars, and as usual we stayed up all night (in Sweden the pre-show began 12:30 am and the main show finished at 5:20 am). It's always worth it, even though I have to take some time off work. But for this?? A conference for industry people. So many dull, lifeless choises. No music, no humor, no clips or even images. I don't care how 10 people I've never heard of discover cinema - I want to see the work they're being celebrated for.
The Prom (2020)
How I would have fixed it
At most 100 minute screen time. First 50 minutes is leading up to the prom, then the fake prom, then they head over to the real prom. First it's sad and uncomfortable, then lessons are learned, people come to new understandings and then a joyful ending. The hour between the fake prom and the inclusive prom is too damn long with forgetable music
Superintelligence (2020)
Too many chances
Ben Falcone has gotten too many chances. Melissa McCarthy used to be one of my favorite comedy actresses. But this is the last drop. Spending a nice friday on this film when nobody tried their best making it. Nobody
This Is Paris (2020)
Paris produced this
The documentary is unbiased since Paris is a producer. It seems she's presenting herself in a light she prefers, and not in an honest way. However, the Coachella scene is amazing, so damn awesome she gave cameras access to such a emotional moment. Best scene in a documentary I've seen for a long time
Sex Education: Episode 5 (2020)
Three too similar storylines
Otis, Meave and Ola
Eric, Adam and Rahim
Jean, Jakob and Remi
Three storylines about choosing between two love interests in the same season. Kinda lazy, especially since Otis and Ola logically should have broke up as soon as their parents became a couple. Jean and Jakob had chemistry and made sense, Ola and Otis had been on like one date
American Horror Story: Final Girl (2019)
Impossible task
Zach Villa said he got the script 2 weeks before the episode AIRED. WHY do they build up for a festival when they obviously don't have the time to film it? No climax, no age make up on Emma Roberts (playing at least 50-years old).. just like the Asylum the finale is mostly just talking + more new characters/storylines that we're not invested in.
Midway (2019)
Wa-a-y too man characters
You simply can't emotionally connect to so many People. Dunkirk did it best when narrowing it down and letting us follow their journey. Instead we're supposed to care about Ed Skreins one note character who reminds me so much of Tommy Wiseau it's hilarious
BoJack Horseman: Surprise! (2019)
I just love this show so much
Hilarious set ups for jokes, laughed so muched while FEELING THINGS. Also spot on representation of influencer culture + great voice work. The premise could have gotten old half way through but it worked to the end. I'm so happy the show is ending on such a high note.
American Horror Story: Red Dawn (2019)
Again??
Third season of "if you die here you stay here". Second season in a row with satan. I've felt that the show has gotten to repetitive for a while and therefore I was excited for this season for taking a new route. But even with a fresh setting it's the same as usual. I will finish this season but this will probably be the last season I watch
In the Tall Grass (2019)
Better than the novel...
...but still pretty boring and repetetive. So glad they toned down the annoying limericks from the novel while expanding (A LOT) from the source material. But the third act had me pretty checked out.
The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
Stop insisting on 13 episodes a season
Season 3 could have been pretty good if it was 8 episodes, without even removing any storylines. I will not bother with season 4 if the pacing doesn't get better.
The Handmaid's Tale: Liars (2019)
Even the "good" episodes are boring
5 minutes of excitement doesn't make up for 45 dull minutes. However, happy to see actual plot progression
Years and Years: Episode 2 (2019)
No place to live
Who sells their house and packs up all their stuff without having planned where to move next?
Otherhood (2019)
Hard to care for any character
Sometimes the characters have reasonable motivations and valid points - but most of the time all the characters are just unlikeable. Solid acting from the three leads makes the first act enjoyable but after that it's hard to care for any character
