Cold Meat (2023)
Quite enjoyed this even though it was dodge in places!
Well, here I am, start to the week, work finished, feet up and so I fancied watching something online. Cold Meat came up unexpectedly, and unexpectedly I quite liked the premise of the film.
The opening scenes had my attention mostly due to the location and diner type feel (those diners that seem to look like bigger than average Trailer Units). The acting is good and when there is interaction it feels so in a not unnatural way which is always a plus for me in movies such as this.
Anyway, as other reviews have said, there are plenty of twists and turns so it will keep one's attention and interest. The acting between the two leads is good and you can see the effort they have put into portraying their respective characters.
I think movie lovers will enjoy this is probably my overall verdict.
I understand this was filmed in a short time but I have to say the film is well made, enjoyed the lighting, cinematography, and editing.
The Serial Killer's Wife (2023)
Overall, an entertaining binge watch.
Suffering from a flare up of sciatica I thought I'd watch something I don't normally watch - plus it's a Saturday and a long weekend with the bank holiday. Anyway, my partner out for the afternoon I thought I'd give this a go.
First impressions are it has potential so keeps one interested just (about). Although the acting seems wooden I thought it actually worked. The storyline is not one that many people wouldn't know about being about a murder-mystery. But the way it's executed, I think ok editing, loads of unexplained plots , but overall it just seemed to work for me on this occasion.
I'd recommend this to anyone having a lazy day/evening and needs something non-taxing that keeps the interest going. Oh, given some scenes I'd recommend over 13 years and above.
The Castaways (2023)
Hmmm passes the time, that's what I'll say
Episode 1 is nothing to write home about and if I'm honest, and it wasn't Easter, I would not have watched any further. As it is, I found myself starting to watch episode 2 in the hope that this would get better. I mean, who doesn't like a good old fashioned marooned on a desert island story, especially when it has characters who survive a plane crash! Background stories were vaguely interesting but didn't really add much to the plot. There are a few annoying scenes when one thinks for heavens sake, you're on an island and need to be in survival mode and not rock the boat the more you find out about your fellow survivors.
Anyway, it didn't get any better but I found myself watching it all.
If you have nothing better to do and appreciate Sheridan Smith (even though I did find her annoying in a couple of scenes, but overall, terrific actress), maybe you'll like it more than the 6 stars I gave it - which was being generous!
A Gentleman in Moscow (2024)
Good start
Really enjoyed the first episode and here's hoping it goes on in the same vein. It starts slowly and feels a slow burn - I haven't read the book yet but by all accounts the book also seems a slow burner. Don't let that put you off, the characters are interesting, Ewan McGregor fits in seamlessly for his role and it is quite atmospheric. I can't think of anything negative to say and have to say this feels like an original and I can't think of any series it's taken from. The story starts towards the end of the Russian revolution and it's a Russia that is finding its feet and getting round to Leninism and Socialism.
I'm looking forward to the second episode so here's hoping the good work continues.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
Watch alone for a maximum immersive experience
I've watched this film twice. The first time when it was released with others and I have to say, I enjoyed it. Having recently seen this again, I decided I'd make this my matinee film. I enjoyed it even more the second time of watching (14 years after I first watched it!).
Anyway, the film is beautifully shot, it's very atmospheric and I found the run time at just over 2 hours perfect. All the actors are wonderful and believable - Javier Bardem excels (as he does in most of his movies).
Pacing is perfect. Scenes are in chronological order so one doesn't have the flashbacks that some film makers use for context.
As in the title of this review, I have to say watching it alone was great and I would highly recommend people to watch it in one sitting.
Soleil Ô (1970)
A film made in 1970 still relevant in 2017!
I saw this as part of the BFI film festival in October 2017 in London. I was curious because it featured immigration from Mauritania, a country I had visited decades before, to France, who were the colonialist rulers of Mauritania.
The film starts in a really interesting and visual manner with many of the first scenes framing whats to come in the rest of the movie.
The themes in the movie are as relevant now in 2017 as they were back in the 1960's/70's. The acting is acceptable, and one can only marvel at the innovative way the film is made on such a low budget.
I was laughing, crying, dismaying, basically this film makes the viewer go through a gamut of emotions.
I think this film should be essential viewing for anyone interested in colonialism, racism, immigration, and last but not least, African cinema.
The Reader (2008)
Beautifully told and enacted
This, in essence, is a simple story told in a very matter of fact manner that doesn't insult the viewers intelligence. From the opening to the scene it is spellbinding stuff and if the viewer were to watch the film for what it is, which is a coming of age romance with an emotionally stunted woman who has somewhat lost her humanity, and that includes the losing the emotion of love, then it is indeed a brilliantly told film. What makes this film so emotive is the subject matter that resonates most of the way through the film, namely the holocaust. The film doesn't pretend that this is secondary in any way shape or form, it's just that the main story is of two people, one lady, who has lost her way in life in terms of emotions and primarily one boy (often referred to as 'kid' by the older lady).
As much as the holocaust and anything associated with it sickens the senses, the fact that it is one of the subject matters of this film associated with one of the leading characters doesn't necessarily mean this need be considered a holocaust movie - in fact it's not! The subject of the holocaust is respectfully dealt with and I think they've done a good job with the subject matter.
In fact, I really enjoyed this film and it was a joy for me not have all the buttons pushed when they could so easily have gone that way.
All in all, watch it folks, if you love movies I think you'll love this for what it is!
