Limbo (2020)
Same road but different approach.
The writer / director achieved what I can call the hero change from within , where the protagonist took the same open road at the end but the journey changed him completely. From my humble opinion, this is how a festival film should look like. Although a lot of films tried to tackle the Syrian refugee case but this film was totally different, using filmmaking to tell the story in an artistic and sarcastic way.
Joker (2019)
Did you get the joke?
I still remember the excitement I had when I saw the Batman, I was 10 years old ,then saw it for more than 5 times throughout my childhood years and every time I saw it I couldn't find a reason why the joker is so evil but that didn't mean I lost the excitement. The dark knight was released and Micheal Caine or Alfred gave some reasons to the joker evilness "some men aren't looking for any thing logical like money, they can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch The world burn".
When I watched the joker yesterday it added more reasons to his evilness and unpredictable doings with challenging performance compared to the deceased Heath Ledger. The joker performance by Joaquin Phoenix added a new approach to the character, starting from his laugh, posture and attitude down to his inner conflict. The protagonist journey from Arthur fleck to joker shows how society can have a massive impact on Arthur descend into madness also giving another reason to the hatred for the Bruce Wayne family. It's not a joke to hurt someone's feelings and it's not a joke to think that you're infamous by making a couple of dollars.
I don't agree or disagree with the joker but I felt so bad about our humanity and what we could say or do that turns one of us into a criminal and if something happens to any human being rich or poor known or a nobody we should all care. The joker is astonishing and a wake up call for humanity ,Joker "some people will get the joke and others won't". Before I watch the movie I thought it's a tragedy but after watching I realized it's a comedy.
JOKER "I used to think my life is a tragedy but now i realize it's comedy"HAHAHAHA.
The Square (2017)
Laugh out loud then think about
Simple story with huge impact, a lot of subtext and questions raised with a sarcastic view about humanity that will defiantly make you laugh. Are we animals or sometimes life drives us to behave like animals and what is our rights and obligations toward our community. It begins with a simple situation what if our protagonist Christian phone gets stolen and he knows the location of the thief in a building block and rather than giving up he starts to give mails to the whole block suspecting the whole block of stealing his phone and voila his phone is back but rather than the story ends it is just getting started. Christian manage a museum and launching a new show called the square but his attitude toward community changes from this simple situation and he starts acting like an animal if he already doesn't have some animal needs like sex without no feelings and in between scenes of Christian we see scenes for beggars in the streets like the one we see in our everyday life telling us that those people are not doing any good for our community. Cant forget the director decision making in some scenes like ignoring to use wide shots to show us whats happening in a situation but he prefers to focus on the important actor expressions so we can feel more than to see a situation. In the museum a lot of subtexts and massages like a piles of dirt and an old security female watching the room where a huge bold sign says YOU ARE NOTHING and no one actually want to enter this room which is a massage for all of us as humans – do good to your community cause at the end you will die and nobody will remember you and another room which is all about trust, like how could we trust each other if we couldn't stand for each other. In Social media people will only notice you if you you did a bloody and dark videos and its shown in the marketing campaign of the square show in the movie. Cant forget the amazing performance of everyone in the movie even the chimpanzee and the dog. We know chimpanzees are the closest to human behavior which lead us to one of best scenes I have ever seen, it act like the link between the whole story and the massage given to audiences (shown in the movie poster) and also reflecting an important question "what we should do if someone threatens our community, should we act like animals in these case or go blind and say we are civilized" this is the sarcastic view of the movie. The most important question we should look for doesn't concern us but concern future generations where its shown in the form of Christian two little daughters and the way they fight with each other and what we do in front of them that shapes there attitude towards community. "The Square is a sanctuary of trust and caring. Within it we all share equal rights and obligations" Christian words in the first half of the movie and in the other half he beats a young boy and searches in the garbage bin and do sex because he is horny just like an animal. Its a universal movie that will let you link and think about things happening around you in a different way and that's why its a Palm Doir winner.
La La Land (2016)
Love is just like jazz
I am not so into musical but when i knew that its nominated for more than 14 Oscars then its a must see movie. Will capture you from the beginning cause its a love story from a perspective of both lead characters where you will never get bored. Its a very classical approach to filmmaking where characters express there feelings by singing and at the same time using the light to focus on a character inner feelings, i loved the chemistry between Ryan gosling & Emma stone its magical. One of the greatest romance movies of its time with a message that will keep you thinking about. I recommend new couples, old couples or even singles to go and watch these piece of art. Love is just like jazz it could evolve or get old but it will never vanishes. And it's definitely a best picture Oscar winner.
Drive (2011)
"Your friend Nino didn't make it across the river"
If the story was't made before with different Genres i would have voted 10 out of 10. Its Ryan gosling best performance ever, the name of the character not mentioned once in the movie even his name in IMDb is driver, we don't know his background, all we know about him from the first couple of scenes that he can drive and he is very organized but the real acting appears when he starts to meet Irene (Carey Mulligan) and how we get to understand from a couple of scenes that a love relation starts to grow, Without they even speak you can feel the love between them.Very hard for a performer to say much without saying nothing but when he speaks you want to listen and here comes the work of art from Iranian writer Hossein Amini, even in the action sequences and how real it appears where in a little time they do a lot. One of the great scenes is the elevator scene where the director took a risk by playing with lights to shift between his love to Irene and showing his bad character side at the same moment.A movie is all about how a director let you use your most important senses (sight-hearing) to make you shift between your emotions. The director Nicolas Winding Refn from Denmark toke a Cannes award for this work of art. If you watched the movie and your asking yourself why the driver wears a scorpion jacket and what does it mean by "Nino didn't make it across the river" check out this story: A scorpion asks a frog to carry it across a river. The frog hesitates, afraid of being stung, but the scorpion argues that if it did so, they would both drown. Considering this, the frog agrees, but midway across the river the scorpion does indeed sting the frog, dooming them both. When the frog asks the scorpion why, the scorpion replies that it was in its nature to do so.
Big Eyes (2014)
Big Eyes is all around us
Big Eyes: a must see movie for all female fighters because it could happen, if it didn't happen already and also because its a true story. It starts with a love bound created between Margaret and Keane two amateur painters, an unconditional love. They started to help each other to succeed as professional painters but after a while Keane found out that her talent overcome his so he started to focus on selling her work with his own name on it. When she started to feel that he is not helping her but he is helping only himself she went for advice but she came back with nothing and continued on painting with the name of her husband. Finally a critic appears played by one of the greatest British actors Terence Stamp to change her course of her life forever to give herself a chance for redemption, to take her own advice rather than others and to stop thinking about Keane and because he is weak he threatens to kill her so she ran away and with the help of her daughter which acted through the whole movie as a wake-up call, finally Margaret stand against Keane and at the end her talent proved him wrong in-front of everyone. On a second thought this movie is not only for female fighters, its also for anyone who thinks that talent could be stolen cause it could be borrowed but never stolen. Big Eyed people will somehow try to kill your talent but not for long cause your talent will find a way to prevail. One important thing in this movie there is a lot of Oscar nominations and winners from cast and crew.
The Revenant (2015)
Why It deserves three Oscars and much more?
This movie took three Oscars a best director, actor and cinematographer Might be for the following reasons: Best cinematography for using the minimum dialogue and maximum visuals to show the inner felling of Hugh glass in every scene specifically when he is approaching death. The protagonist is not only destroyed mentally by the death of his family but also destroyed physically by the bear attack which left him speechless and It gets worse and worse by the ruthless and evil heart of John fretz portrayed by the infamous Tom hardy. I can feel how it took a hard, long time to direct by maintaining the continuity of either the shots or the cinematography and sometimes nature uncontrollable atmosphere. Let's not forget the great acting skills by Leonardo DiCaprio who survived coldness, eating raw meat and horseback riding that looks like riding a bicycle . It's a one of the great and most educational film I've ever seen and it will be mined in the history of Hollywood as one of the greatest films for years to come. Can't forget the great talented writers that tried to tell us revenge won't make you relieved or satisfied but it will let you carry a heavy burden that could Weigh your movement and only make it worse.
Warcraft (2016)
From darkness comes light and from light comes darkness
If you are good, evil (vile) can control you and lead you to do bad things also a little of good (light) in you if we you are evil can change you into good and light also can be understood as knowledge this is the real war and what the people who brought this game into life added such a great meaning. I don't remember that I played this game before and I don't have to so I can understand this movie and all the characters.there is magic in the moment you put on the 3D glasses and started to understand this world and I will be waiting for more sequels because I already got hooked into this world and the amazing imaginary characters or even the simplest special effects and the whole effort of Warcraft cast and crew.Go for the ride and choose your side.
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
First time to like captain America as a superhero team leader
When I was a teenager I wished that Hollywood would make a film that is all action from the beginning to the end but after that I knew that my wish couldn't come true cause it will be a shallow movie with nothing to say. Captain America: Civil War succeeded in making a film with more than 50% action sequences, giving me the feeling of a teenager once again and that nothing is impossible. Funny, explosive with quite a good message about friendship, revenge and believing in teamwork.First time to like captain America as a superhero and liked the spin at the end of the movie which hold a strong link from the beginning till the end. a lot of comic characters appeared in the movie where there appearance made the movie stronger and funnier. definitely tony stark or Robert is such a great actor and i wish to see him in a villain character in his upcoming movies and it doesn't matter if its a comic or not.
X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
The best XMEN and maybe the best comic ever made
First of all if I am going to speak about the director Bryan singer he directed and assisted in writing XMEN , X2 and then came back after ten years with Days of the future past also can't forget The Usual Suspect one of Hollywood's greatest film that inspired a lot of movies around the world including Egypt. I found out that Bryan singer is breathing XMEN and his love for the characters is felt while watching. I heard before that Hollywood focuses on the villain because its a rule of some = if the villain is great the hero will be a legend and it's the first time through my watching of comics specially XMEN to find out that it's not about the power you got its about how to control it and use it in doing good things or fighting evil. Bottom line I enjoyed the movie like a roller-coaster ride that got me scared but still wish to go for a second ride. X-Men: Apocalypse as all comics that got many characters joining forces is talking about friendship and above all the most important four letters word that could change your life H O P E .
