The King's Man (2021)
Why the low score?
It is a prequel to the Kingsman movies from 2015 en 2017. It may not be the gem from 2015 and allthough the 2017 movies has higher rate than this one, both this one and the 2017 deserve at least a 7 star rating. It is fun to watch, gives a great twist at our world history, has great scenery and cinematographic experiences and the acting is just great. Or good at least. Storyline is fun and holds your attention throughout the movie. And you keep asking yourself: who in the heck is the bad guy? You never get to see him reckognizable and that adds to the watching experience. Go see this movie, for me it is on about the same level as the Kingsman movie from 2015. And i would say the one from 2017 deserves the same rating ass well.
Blood & Gold (2023)
No Tarantino wannabe, a Tarantino hommage
It is German, it is European, it is no Hollywood blockbuster. But it is a Tarantino hommage. It is a Tarantino-esk western situated in the last days of WWII. Just enjoy it, if you love Tarantino and you are open minded to enjoy films from other directors in a Tarantino-esk style you will love it. There are also some historically aspects you will not find often in the more Hollywood rooted war movies, like the different 'cultural environments' of the various German war branches. Not all German soldiers were mass murdering maniacs. A lot of them were just indoctrinated young boys who did not know anything else. Truth is in the eye of the beholder, there is no such thing as 'the absolute thruth.
Echoes (2022)
Don't believe the haters
I had some reserves watching Echoes. The negative reviews somehow seemed more thrustworthy than the positive reviews. I started watching it though and have no regrets doing so. In the beginning i had a little difficulty figuring out who is who. And from episode two i was in sympathy with Leni. Then came episode five and it turned me around 180 degrees leaving me in sympathy with Gina. I love all the twists and turns as the series progresses. Go watch it yourself and i am pretty sure you give it more then the 5.9 stars it scores as i am writing this. I think it deserves at least a 7. And i do not think of it as a love-it-or-hate-it show. I really do not understand the 1 or 2 star or the 10 star scores. It is definitely a 7 star series.
Mayor Grom. Chumnoy Doktor (2021)
The super villain is a kind of super hero.
And the super hero is a bad ass city wrecking cop. Not the kind of big budget superhero movie we are used to from Hollywood, no really big tech gadgets or big cgi scenes, no over the top action. But still good action scenes, good story and character development. I say give it a try without comparing it directly to superman, batman, captain america or other comicbook heroes and have fun watching it! I somehow also get a bit of a french movie feel from watching it, so it feels more European then American in a way. I hope they will make another Major Grom movie, because this one has the subtitle Plague Doctor, suggesting there may be more to follow?
Battle of the Sexes (2017)
Deserves a higher rating!
Maybe i am biased, because i like Emma and Steve. And i like movies about the seventies. But they really do put on a great show. Lots of humor, lots of seventies vibes, never a dull moment or any bad acting. With great supporting actors. It is not a pure comedy, it is not a pure sportsmovie, it is not a pure historic report. It is something in between, maybe that is the reason of a mediocre rating, but it deserves at least 7 stars. Go watch if you haven't.
Cowboy Bebop (2021)
Stands on its own for me and is pretty good.
I don't like anime at all. So for me I judge this show like it stands on its own. Not as a remake of an anime show. And on its own it is a pretty good show! I like this style of sci-fi. A bit of a dark vibe but not dystopian. And it has great music, great action, good storylines. Not a top show but give it a chance, it will grow on you. They use the word cowboy in a certain way and it has a bit of a raw wild west feel but is not a space western. Go watch and be surprised!
Yellowstone (2018)
Growing into the serie, falling in love with Kelly Reilly
Damn, it is a drama and a little bit slowpaced for what i usually like. But it is a great show and i am falling in love with Kelly Reilly, she plays the black sheep of the family with top performance. Go watch it, it is not packed with a lot of action or suspense, but it is a good storytelling series with great character development along the way.
Crown Vic (2019)
More drama then action, a lot of crime, great performances
I did not recognize Thomas Jane, not one of his usual roles, great performance by him. Deep drama, a lot of moral dilemmas streetcops can encounter. Sometimes a bit uneasy to justify their choices. There is action and crime in it, but it is supporting to the drama. Do not expect a high energy action movie, but if you take the time and go with the pace of this movie you will like it.
The Baytown Outlaws (2012)
Fun action but a very very annoying sound production.
I love the action in the movie, but in allmost every scene there is a bird whistle and it is annoying as hell! Sometimes it goes a bit to the background, but once you start noticing the whistle you can not unhear it and it ruins the movie!
Arrival (2016)
Great sci-fi but why the polarizing geo politics?
I liked the concept, storyline, production, execution but why oh why are the Chinese and Russians yet again the geo political bad guys? Why not just make a great sci-fi without politics?
Dirt (2018)
Feel good movie on dirt tracks!
Just a little above average american style feel food movie about a criminal street kid givin a last chance to better his life on a racing team but on dirt tracks. No oscar material, but fun, a lot of feel good moments, action on dirt track moments and no f#ck ups by the actors. Just enjoy if you like (dirt) racing movies and/or feel good movies on a average week night.
Lupin (2021)
Judge it for what it is - it is an adventure!
Yes it has plotholes, yes a lot of the script is not airtight or realistic. For all the judgemental critics: it is a visual adaptation of an adventure book from the early 1900's set in todays world. It does not have to be completely realistic or believable. It is just a very pleasant adventure series about a gentlemen thief. Enjoy it for what it is.
Ozark (2017)
Ozark vs Breaking Bad
Two different shows with some similarities. Ozark is not as good as Breaking Bad but it is very close. Development of characters and storyline with subplots goes to a new level in season 2. Surprisingly, where in season 1 Marty can be considered to be the 'Walter' of Ozark, in season 2 Wendy developes to be the Walter.... She turns out to be ruthless, smart, deceiving, cunning, etc. It is a really nice twist that keeps you mesmerized and impatient to view the next episode. Great Show You Must Watch!
Dialogue in season 2: Marty: i'm an accountant, i move numbers around. Helen: i'm a lawyer i move words around.
The Highwaymen (2019)
No problems with the slow pace, a lot of fun!
Yes, it is a little bit slow paced. But the dynamic between Harrelson and Costner works surprisingly well! Great dialogues, sometimes humorous, sometimes snappy and witty. And the cynematographic images are nice when there is no dialogue. I love high energy action movies or mysterious or dark thrillers, but i am happy i took the time to enjoy this one!
