Ghost Wars (2017)
If you like cliche
What's wrong: The script is uninspired, Almost written on autopilot. Acting seldom rises above 80's A-team level. Main character is twodimensional and has a silly big zeroes hairdo that remains perfect in every scene. So many weird directing choices that do not add up or are plain wrong makes you wonder why no one on the crew said anything. Or maybe they did but no one was listening. If you like cliche bingo this is your series. Clearly there was a budget but it looks like it was spend more on mediocre safety than on real creativity. What was good? I liked the lightning (not the bad Nuit Americain, or the yellow Mexico filter, (why??)) and the location shots where cool.
The Guardians of Justice (2022)
I am entertained
The show steals from everything and mixes it into an entertaining 80's vibe show with the speed of 2022. Well made with love for the superhero genre. I am entertained.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Can't take the whispering and the crying anymore.
First: great story. Excellent writing. The design, tech and the effects are exemplary.
I will always watch Star Trek.
But please stop the whispering and the crying all the time. It is unbearable. Who gave the OK for that? Why is this potentially brilliant high budget series infected with this weird emo virus?
The 6/10 is there because the story and the design saved the show.
De vliegende Hollander (1995)
Amazing, breathtaking.....
Slow paced movie, brilliant acting by Groothof. This is one of those rare movies that leaves you watching a blank screen for 7 minutes after the end-titles. That leaves you speechless long after you left the theater. I rediscovered it 10 years later and like a real classic it still has not lost its strength.
If you want adventure the Spielberg or POTC-way, skip this one. If you want to learn anything, are curious about things and have patience this is an overwhelming epos. This is an action-movie of the heart and of the mind.
And don't nag about the goofs. Not everyone has a vain absurd budget that could save a small country from starvation.
Fur TV (2004)
Brilliant comedy!
Why is this brilliant piece of British comedy so unknown? Is there not an audience for strange muppet-like creatures exploring nightlife and sex? There should be! The puppets are very good, not much emotional expression but thanks to excellent puppeteering and very sharp timing this piece of work should be a classic in comedy. The story is very simple, the script is sensational, the voices and sound in general are amongst the best recorded puppetmovies. FurTV should have gone worldwide, at least six seasons instead of just one pilot. It would be a shame for comedy if this will be all! Mail the BBC!
nb. Only three movies have made me spray beer from my nose from laughing. This is one of them.
