Casablanca (1942)
Here's looking at you, kid!
Not many times have I gone out of my way to write a review here but this masterpiece certainly makes it worth it.
I won't bore you with the details of what goes on the movie, however, I'll tell you what it can do to you. It makes you remember how lucky we are to live in an era where there is no war, at least not a world war that is. It allows you to value your loved one, even more so that you already do. Even if you don't have a special someone at present time, it clearly explains what unconditional love can be.
The acting is just wonderfully performed, so is the script. A true work of art that will be regarded for centuries to come as one of the best romantic movies of all times if not THE BEST.
Past Lives (2023)
Slow and overrated
This may not be a popular opinion here, however, I feel this movie is highly overrated. Everything that happens is predictable and it happens so so slowly that it bores you to death. On the other side, the acting is great and the story itself was very interesting (at first). If you would like me that don't like movies without a "clear ending", this may not be the kind of movie for you.
I wish the end would have been more precise and that there would have been some credibility to the love fell by Nora and her childhood sweat heart other than being great friends in school and Skyping for a month 12 years later. It's just not believable.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Already watched it twice. Liked it even more
No bloopers here, just my opinion on this excellent movie and also my opinion on the bad "Metascore" (very low in my opinion). First of all, the only reason I'm not giving it a 10 is because I'm very selective in terms of 10s. I've watched literally thousands of movies and only 9 films and 8 of them were made before the 1950s so you get an idea. So this movie getting a 9 from me is huge.
That aside, having been born in 1985 I was lucky enough to have grown with Mario Bros, from regular Nintendo, Nintendo 64 and Game cube I played most of mario games and although I never thought my self of a huge fan of this particular video game like I was a fan of Metal Gear Solid and games of that sort I deeply enjoyed the playability and storytelling behind Mario saga.
I went to the 11 pm showing on a Sunday which was full and that's already surprising for any movie these days, specially for the day and time. I was captivated right from the beginning as soon as I realized the trama was not necessarily childish but one that would reach all audiences, making you feel like back in the 90s with the music and keeping it Simple and not "progressive" which I found very interesting considering the times we live in. This is a story that began in the late 80s and the director made sure to keep it that way. That's something I really appreciate and will make me comfortable to show to the younger crowd in my family. And this is my comment on the low metascore: how is it possible that this movie did not meet most "experts" expectations just because it didn't include any of the new wave characters? Really? I mean there is a space for everything, why would you forcibly include something that was never part of the original story? Didn't you all see the huge mess buzz lightyear was? Here's the funny part, a couple of my friends are part of the L. G..... community and guess what? They loved the film just the way it was.
I'm Hispanic and I have zero issues with watching movies where there aren't any Latin people. Also if the Latin person in a movie happens to be a servant or something of that sort, guess what? I would never be offended. So please let's try and bring back good movies just by keeping things simple and real. There are plenty storyline and spaces for all minorities to shine but we don't have to be present in every single one of them. Let's try to bring back a simple world like Mario times when victimhood was not a thing and you could go about your day without feeling you've offended Someone just by speaking your mind.
Thank you Mario, never thought I could watch a 2023 movie that made me feel like this did.
Congratulations to the team and all actors involved.
If your haven't watched yet, don't miss it .
That '90s Show (2023)
Netflix has done it again
Netflix has once again tried to impose stereotypes that just don't feel natural. If anything, it should be called that 2020's show instead of 90's as they keep trying to force the new progress culture on us in every way.
I really wanted to like this show, I was a huge fan of the original one, it's really a shame they would come up with something so lame, Forced acting, forced roles, forced everything.
There are certain things that should remain untouched, that70's show was one of them. I do have to say Eric and Donna still make a great couple and they look like look wonderful, I really would like to understand why the have to push everything so much, Netflix didn't try so hard maybe things would sink in better than the do now.
Next Time We Love (1936)
The most accurate movie title
I spent days trying to find a way to watch this movie, I'm glad I put the time and effort to find it.
I am really surprised this movie was made in the 30s. Some of the things you'll see in this movie are way ahead of its time. A girl that wants to make a life for self. A couple that understands that spending so much time apart may eventually lead to breaking from monogamy.
This movie was wonderfully acted and directed. Stewart and Sullivan keep showing that a good chemistry looks like on the big screen.
As the movie progresses you are more lively to understand the title and at the end it just makes total sense. Completely underrated drama / romance from the 30s.
The Shopworn Angel (1938)
Most underrated movie from the 1930s
I am shocked to know this movie never got the attention it deserved and the rating is not very fair in my opinion.
It's all a matter of perspective, at the end I think she did love "the kid". You can tell at the last chapel scene that she was in pain seeing him Go.
You can tell how much pain she is right when the movie ends. The soldier (James Stewart) is genuine and kind hearted, made her a better person.
In a way I think she was lying to herself when she said it was just a wedding to make him happy. Again, this is just a matter of perspective but Their connection is undeniable.
Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey (2022)
It's documentaries like this that can help stop this atrocity
Very important to note that the last episode is hard to watch. Just listening to it made me burst into tears. I still can't believe we live in a world where things like these continue to happen. However I thank God for all those brave girls, Texas police, FBI, and everyone else involved in tracking down this monster of Warren.
Hall Pass (2011)
Solid comedy. Fun doesn't stop
Can't seem to understand why the low reviews. It's been a while since I watched a comedy that wasn't cheesy romantic or stupid. This was just the perfect balance.
Owen Wilson was great as usual.
Witness for the Prosecution (1957)
Most enjoyable courtroom drama! Popcorn time!!
I have to say Witness for the prosecution and 12 Angry man are my favorite court movies of all times. This one has a particular twist that at the end is really unexpected. So refreshing not being able to guess what's coming. So entertaining, such refined acting. Solid 10/10 . This one is on my top favorite 25 movies of all times.
Inventing Anna (2022)
Why non sense politics?
This could have truly be a good decent show but the need of bringing politics to the show was so big I guess they just decided to include in any part that it would make the slightest sense. The guy is not even president anymore... this is just so unnecessary.
Lupin (2021)
It's a good show. Just learn to deal with stupidity
You will find several times that things don't really make sense. This guy Assan is very smart most of the time but he tends to do poor choices that are just stupid so you end up being frustrated more often than not.
The acting is just great. The plot is refreshing. Overall it is a decent show that adds value to Netflix.
Greenland (2020)
Sensed a subliminal message
End of world kind of movie that emphasized the human misbehavior in such crisis. I think the movie is 100% enjoyable and brings a good message to the table, however they over did the fact that only black people and Hispanic seemed to be nice. You can see this in the scenes of the military, looters, riders/ passengers, everywhere. Not sure what point they were trying to make but definitely unnecessary. And this is coming from a Venezuelan by the way.
Other than that the movie is nicely done and the acting is very believable. It's not a life changing movie by any means but in my opinion gets a solid 6. For this kind of movie I think that's high.
One of the biggest factors why I liked this movie is because it isn't too frustrating. You get several "reliefs" and temporary happy endings as you watch it so you don't have to wait until the end.
Kassandra (1992)
This needs a 2022 remake
I think the best way to commemorate 30 years of this master piece would be to have a remake with some of the original actors plating different roles, of course.
If you have never watched this, you are missing out on some of the best dramas ever. This has nothing to envy other Hollywood shows. The production and direction are very good considering the year of its release.
I did some research and it seems this was filmed in a small town names Mucuchies (yes, the Mucuchie dogs come from there). This Venezuelan town is a short 40 minute drive to Merida, which is more like a city. This town (Mucuchies has an average weather of 10 C* degrees. So it was usually very cold when they filmed this and yet you dont see them wearing huge jackets or anything. I find that vert interesting.
The show is very unique and the background music they use is surreal. There is not one single thing I would change about the show. You will find in love with Coraima Torres (Andreina / Kassandra), I mean who wouldn't. 30 years later and she is still a queen, as beautiful as always.
One thing to keep in mind is that the audio quality is not the greatest, at least not on Youtube these days. So you will have to really turn up the volume to listen. If you don't speak spanish 100% you will have a hard time understanding what they say sometimes. Specially with the Romanies, they use unusual words.
I made the numbers, you will need about 115 hours to watch this show fully. The plot is so powerful it will take you away for the entire time you are watching. Keeping you focused on the show only. If you are going through a tough time and need to take your mind off of it, this Telenovela will help.
I also found on google Kassandra has been broadcasted in over 140 countries and in more than 60 languages / dialects which makes it a Guinness Record holder. I have no doubts this is the best Telenovela ever made. I mean this if you want a real authentic telenovela. Those new versions to attract younger crowds with a lot of comedy are great too (like Betty La Fea, Pedro el Escamoso, Mi gorda bella) but I would not put them in the same category as Kassandra. it is like comparing apples to oranges. I am sure without a doubt Betty La Fea deserves the number one spot for "funny telenovelas", it was also very innovative.
I would give this show 20 stars if I could. I hope to travel to that small town one day and learn more about the history of it.
