What You Wish For (2023)
Keep your distance!
It is so absurd, that it is no longer neither a horror nor a thriller. If you prepare yourself for pure fun, then it can by a good watching.
There are difficult moments, but gradually it becomes so unrealistic, that you can easily survive.
It has an atmosphere of old good criminal stories, location is fabulous, some scenes are pure fun.
I generally hate horror movies, but this one is not the one.
I would not go that far, that we have a satire on the rich people here, but definitely there may be some truth about crazy ideas of those who have everything and boredome makes them sick in their minds.
Saltburn (2023)
Not recommended :-(
Not recommended at all!
What an awfull and digusting thing.
It is pretensious too much even for a satire. Desbelief is a word used in some reviews and I fully agree. The main character, ugly and disgusting, is not convincing at all, although his acting, as acting in general in this production is excellent.
I am really impressed by what the entire cast did with this crap script.
It was difficult to finish watching. I understand the need for the final dance, performed to the perfection, but it was so unplesant to stay in the front of the screen. Not because of the nudity. The ugliness of this human being is beyond comprehension.
The plus? Saltburn is beautifull, especially the garden.
The Castaways (2023)
Do not expect Robinson Crusoe ;-)
And you will not be dissapointed.
If however you would think it will show similar struggle to survive, you will be hugely dissapointed. There is almost nothing about this, how to settle on a deserted island with no human presence at all. From one part to another there are huts, they know how to fish, they have food and water, although complaining it is not sufficient.
Of course setting is fantastic, nature itself is worth watching.
The plot is very unrealistic and sometimes ridiculous, but the scale of it is not more, than in an average criminal story.
Acting is average and uneven. I am afraid Sheridan Smith is not convincing at all. The best of the cast is Lasarus Ratuere.
So, if it rains and you have already walked your dog, make yourself a nice cup of tea and relax watching this beautiful island.
FBI: International (2021)
Just Good Enough
I read some of the very negative opinions and I am honestly surprised. This show is not a masterpiece, but it's good enough to watch it when there is nothing better to do.
I like actors, I like locations, stories vary. Some are not very convincing, but with type of shows it's always likje that.
To sum up - do not expect Oscar winning film level, but for entertainment it is ok.
I forgot to mention the dog! I wonder why not even a single review hasn't mentioned it. There is a Giant Schnauzer, black and very beautifull. If you like dogs, you will like this one. It does not appear in every plot, but when it does, it is a real delight!
The Chelsea Detective (2022)
Neither 10 nor 3
I would have never given this show 10. Neither 3. It is sort of average, but good entertainment and quite watchable. Not very handsome, ginger, middle aged and sligthly over weight - the main character, despite all that is rather symphatetic. Some death, some life, as ususal in British criminal story. And this makes it likeable. Good acting, good dialogues, London nicely shown. And that is it.
Murder in Provence (2022)
Endeavour cooked in Provence
Slow cooking, slow investigation, rather a pretext than the real thing. Beauty of life, places food, wine, what not to enjoy. Do not expect a real criminal story, although it is there. Just relax and admire the location. Ang if you ever watched Father Brown, you will be happy to see Lady Felicia (Nancy Caroll) at her best.
French Exit (2020)
Not for everyone, as one wrote here
Definitely it is for film connaisseurs only. Do not expect just a story about rich widow. It so surreal you need to switch your mind off. Just let the film take you to a incredible journey of independent mind of indpendent person with great distnce to life and its values.
Pfeiffer is not only beautiful, but also mesmerising in her performance.
Koroleva krasoty (2015)
A must see
Fashion and beautiful women. Women of different, slavic beauty. Just that could be enough to watch but there is more, much more. Dramatic story from behind the iron curtain. Nightmare of pathological KGB officer persecutions, suffering of people in times of authoritarian power terror. No freedom, no passports, but of course - life goes on and love stories are always there. I watched all 11 parts almost in one evening. It is so well filmed, acting is superb, Russian countryside in winter, unique russian architectrue, completely different world, in completely remote times. Remote? Really? Just see it to learn about place an time is almost gone.
Greed (2019)
Excellent satire and good acting
Keep your distance :-) It is a kind of double satire - even acting is meant to be a pastiche. Good to watch, while it definitely delivers some strong and sad messages, that are unfortunately still real and true.
Long Shot (2019)
The rating?
It is sooo bad, I cannot imagine where the rating is from.
Boring, superficial, pointless, unconvincing. Do not waste your time on it.
The Favourite (2018)
I agree with very negative reviews
It is awful. I could not watch it, so artificial, so ugly. Cannot understand a single word of positive reviews, not to mention the high rating.
Dirty John (2018)
It is more to it
As obvious as it seems at beginning it is no so at all, or is it?
The acting is purposeful, even in case of younger daughter, it all has its cause. All what it shows is how dependent and influenced all of us can be. And what is unfortunately the most important how easy a man can manipulate any woman into anything. I just wonder how wins?
Ladies in Black (2018)
So refreshing!
It is great to return to times when women were treated with respect, when even maritial sex was shocking to a husband (sic), when women always had gloves.
I have no idea about Australia, even more about its life in 1950-ties, so this is for me like a discovering a new land. A very interesting one.
It is not a perfect movie. It is simply a very nice one to watch.
Blinded by the Lights (2018)
Polish version of a Night Manager
May be a bit unjustified, but I want you to see this series. It is really worth it. It is dark, it is cruel, it is sometimes impossible to watch (because of the cruelty), if you are sensitive enough. It is dark, it is about dark reality, we all think it does not exist, but it is there, in every place you live. Just confront it. To supply drugs, there is an army waiting. Kuba, the main hero (?) is one of them. He considers him a working man. He delivers orders. Simple. Isn't it? But he is special. So special that once you get to know him, you would like to know more. These episodes will keep you waiting, you will want more, and more... Almost an addict ;-))))
The main actor, Kamil Nozynski is a perfect guy for this role. He is the most sensitive person one could imagine for a drug dealer. But he has his own world. His imaginations are what makes the film so different. You either love it, or you hate it, but it is always worth it to let your imagines work.
Who knows, what happens to you?
1983 (2018)
Do not wacht it as related to the Polish history
It is just a thriller and political fiction. I watched all 8 episodes and rather enjoyed it. The plot is much too complicated, unclear to the very end in some parts, but in some parts it's quite atractive. The best part are actors and incredible vision of non existent Poland. Lights, buildings, city panoramas, interior designs - all is just a pleasure to watch. Some scenes dated before 1983 are very, very real, as I remeber them from that time. The vision of the country with its Asian quarters seems borrowed from US but again design, costumes, filming make them all really worth seeing. And yes I VERY MUCH AGREE with v-thea - it is very Orwelian. The book is one those shown at the beginning in an illegal print hole and I suppose it is not without the reason.
I truly recommend watching it. Give it a chance, just let it take you for some kind of a special ride.
Murder on the Orient Express (2017)
Amazed how bad film can one make
Pretentious, articial, boring.
I have no idea how having such a cast of excellent actors, splendid interiors, views, not to mention Agata Christie's novel Mr Branagh managed to produce such a bad film. He lost entirely all the subtleties of Poirot, making him selfcentered, uninteresting churl. Although Keneth Branagh is in general more handsome than Mr Suchet, in this film he is so unnatural, his moustache so stupid, that is even not close to pastiche. It is farse, an ugly and boring one.
Mad Dogs (2015)
A touch of genius
Great entertainment with a large space for some serious thinking. A lot of absurd situations, which makes the film even better.
A man film to reflect upon man approach to life, while just enjoying perfect setting, great acting and great script.
Very different and new,but with some analogies to Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul. There is however not enough material for 10 episodes, therefore some of them are a bit dragged on.
And Belize itself. I have never realize it may look this way, when not viewed from luxury spots.
Watch it! Enjoy it!
45 Years (2015)
Life as it is
Beautifully told story, nice English countryside and an old married couple. 45 years together, dedicated to each other, just getting ready to a big celebration of their wedding anniversary.
Unexpectedly emerging event from the past cast a shadow on this idyllic scenery.
How will they cope? Will it matter? Could something that happened so long ago may have any meaning?
Rampling is excellent in showing her struggle, doubts and even in the final, supposedly optimistic scene, she remains mysteriously undecided.
Life as it is, but how we take it it requires more than just breathing.
Burnt (2015)
Just a film for the last day of 2015
The movie is just what you need for an evening like today (December 31, 2015, the last day of the year). Entertaining, good acting, good and convincing story, nice London backdrop, happy end. I am not really a fun of all these 'chef stories', that are plenty in movies today, but in this case, it is not really the issue. He could be in any other profession. What matters is his dedication, skills and of course - finally - his ability to see the role of others. What makes the film irresistible? His blue eyes? His story? A question whether he can fight all his demons from the past?
All of it, but first of all excellent scenario and excellent cast.
Some Kind of Beautiful (2014)
Different, not sweet and easy at all.
I read reviews and expected disaster. In fact it's quite different from what one may expect. It is not a typical romantic comedy, there is a lot of satire on the American way of living, while the whole film should not be taken too seriously. It is a fun, beautiful places, good acting. Just some life reality, although shown from a little bit funny perspective. Just enjoy it, because you can. I am a real fan of Brosnan and think he delivers as usual. Handsome despite his age, keeps just a proper distance to himself and the guy he plays. All leading actors are just fine and convincing. Watch it and you will enjoy it. May by this is not an extremely ambitious and complicated movie, but don't we need some fun from time to time? In addition, the backdrop landscape is just so nice to watch. So why not give it a go.
