The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988)
Better than the Book
I don't know why Kunderas didn't like the movie. Maybe because the movie was actually better than the book. No spoilers, but I'll just say that there were a few subtle yet significant changes in the film that made this movie a truly moving experience.
Northern Exposure: Get Real (1991)
One for the Romantics
Fun, light-hearted, low-octane episode that primarily focuses on a romance between Marilyn Whirlwind and "the flying man" played by Bill Irwin, one of those guys you've seen a lot in other movies and shows, but can never seem to remember his name. He did an excellent job.
I enjoyed it. Had all the little quirks we've come to know and love about the show. Joel's scheming to get out of town. Holliing thinks Shelly's feet are too big, so he proposes hoping the nuptials will reignite his ardor. A few other fun, typically quirky little twists that I really enjoyed. I think the main message was life is what it is, so make the most of it while you can.
Author: The JT LeRoy Story (2016)
The "Establishment" as Gatekeeper
I'll make this short but sweet.
A forty-year old straight woman wrote a couple of wonderful and beloved works of fiction.
She was subsequently accused of "manipulating the system" by posing as a young, gay male.
The fact is, those much beloved books probably never would have seen the light of day had she not take the route that she did.
And as a writer, that makes me madder than anything.
The Heavenly Body (1944)
Warm, Silly, Funny
Very surprised to see an unfavorable review of this on the front page. No, it's not a classic like some Orson Welles flick, but it is funny, and it is chock full of fine actors.
Honestly, if this comes on some Saturday afternoon, and you're bored, you can't go wrong. You will laugh, and you will feel better.
