“Closely Watched Trains” (dir. Jiřà Menzel, 1966)
In a 2023 video for Criterion Collection’s “Criterion Closet” series, in which filmmakers choose titles from the home video distributor’s archive to take home with them, Aster’s first film was “Closely Watched Trains.” JiÅ™í Menzel’s Czechoslovak Oscar winning film, which focuses on a young man working as a train dispatcher during World Wair II, was also chosen by Aster as a selection for a Film at Lincon Center series he curated.
According to the director, the film and his own “Beau is Afraid” have a lot in common; namely, they’re both about “a man who really needs to come.”
