About us

As of July 1, 2024, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has been split into two new agencies. This is the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH), the former health component of DHEC. Our name may change, but our commitment to protecting, promoting and improving the health and well-being of everyone in South Carolina is stronger than ever. DPH will build on DHEC’s legacy, continuously innovating to achieve best practices that help improve our state’s overall health with the goal of becoming the healthiest state in our nation. Our goal for this new agency is to instill a people-first approach to all that we do. This includes working with our partners, communities, and others to help every South Carolinian have the access, resources, and information they need to make decisions that enhance their health and have access to the highest quality, safe health care. • In case you missed it, DPH in collaboration with South Carolina Children’s Hospital Collaborative, the University of South Carolina and the South Carolina Cancer Alliance published a groundbreaking report last week evaluating 25 years of childhood cancer data in South Carolina.  Priority areas identified in the report include:  —Persistent racial and ethnic disparities in childhood cancer survival.   —A growing population of childhood cancer survivors who require care across their lifespans.  —Changing childhood cancer rates, including rising state trends for childhood lymphoma and leukemia and a decline in brain and central nervous system tumors.   The report was released in honor of #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth in September. Insights gathered from the report will help spread awareness and move the field forward for the sake of patients and their families. This #FeatureFriday, we’re highlighting the heroic efforts of our Healthcare Quality staff, who went above and beyond to support Colleton Medical Center during an emergency evacuation this summer. On a hot weekend in July, Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro experienced a total loss of air conditioning, a serious situation given the summer heat. HQ staff from Emergency Preparedness, Emergency Medical Services, and Health Facilities Construction quickly responded to the scene to provide vital support to the 135-bed hospital. Charlene Bell worked closely with hospital emergency preparedness staff to coordinate the evacuation and ensure patient safety. Baylee Brown cut his vacation short to help assess the hospital’s lab equipment and support the incident command post, ensuring a smooth evacuation process. Graham Cormack conducted a thorough inspection of the hospital to check for safety hazards and to monitor the building’s structural integrity and humidity levels. Mitch Stewart played a crucial role in organizing ambulance resources, facilitating the safe transfer of patients to nearby hospitals. Our Healthcare Quality team is dedicated to protecting the health and safety of our communities, especially during emergencies! #EmbracingService #PromotingTeamwork #PublicHealthHeroes
