Leo: Cast, Plot, Trailer of the Adam Sandler Animated Comedy - Netflix Tudum
- An elderly class pet wants a new lease on life. Unfortunately, he’s stuck with a bunch of fifth graders.By Tudum StaffNov. 21, 2023
Who could forget their class pet from school? Maybe it was the furry hamster that everyone wanted to hold or the snake that escaped its tank and is probably still slithering through the school vents to this day.
Quickly approaching his final year of life, an ancient class pet lizard named Leo has a midlife crisis at the ripe old age of 74. After deciding to leave his cage for good, he unexpectedly falls into a different calling — acting as therapist to the peculiar fifth-grade students in his classroom. Adam Sandler stars in and co-wrote the animated comedy Leo, which encompasses the formative final year of elementary school — as seen through the eyes of a lizard. You can catch a glimpse of what Leo’s world looks like in the clip above, released as part of Netflix’s Geeked Week. Let’s just say that household appliances are not his friends…
Directed by Robert Marianetti, Robert Smigel, and David Wachtenheim, Leo was produced by Adam Sandler and Mireille Soria, and written by Sandler, Smigel, and Paul Sado. The film’s also a family affair — Sandler’s wife, Jackie, and his daughters, Sunny and Sadie, voice characters in the film.

Leo has been the class pet for Fort Myers Elementary’s fifth grade class for the last 74 years. As he approaches the big 75, the lizard starts to worry he is nearing the end of his life, leading to a bit of an identity crisis. Suddenly, Leo wants to see the world outside of his terrarium. In a turn of events, he becomes his students’ emotional support lizard. The only problem? He’s told each student that they’re the only person who can hear him.
Bill Burr
Squirtle is the classroom turtle. A keen observer of his class, Squirtle is a bit of a curmudgeon. Even though he is sometimes envious of how much the kids love Leo, he’s also a loyal friend who will go to great lengths for his terrarium companion.
Cecily Strong
Ms. Malkin is one tough substitute teacher. When she starts off the year ready to teach her students the meaning of discipline and responsibility, the kids worry she is going to ruin their last year of elementary school. But thanks to Leo — who reminds her that she, too, is special — Ms. Malkin slowly remembers why she became a teacher.

Rob Schneider
The school principal is an exuberant character who thinks Ms. Malkin is doing a great job with the kids, blissfully unaware of the lizard shenanigans occurring right under his nose.

What happens in Leo?
Leo is a jaded old lizard with a heart of gold who’s been stuck in the same Florida classroom for longer than he can remember, alongside his terrarium-mate Squirtle the turtle. When Leo learns he only has one year left to live, he plans an escape to experience life on the outside once and for all. Instead, he gets caught up in the problems of his anxious students — and an impossibly mean substitute teacher.
