The student watched the movie Dante's Peak and found it realistic in depicting the destruction from a volcanic eruption, drawing from their geology class. Though able to predict events, they still felt tension from the loss of life and destruction shown. They took pride in the few mentions of the Philippines and Mt. Pinatubo, finding it fascinating to see their country referenced. While including a love story, the movie maintained its focus on the significance of volcanic eruptions and proved that safety should not be compromised for economic interests, as life is more important than material things.

Dantes Peak Reaction Paper

Watching the movie with an understanding in volcanism (from my Geology class, of course) makes me realise that a volcanic activity is far worse and alarming than how it was described by our professor and in the books we have read. Though I can predict what will happen next, I still felt tensed with how large the destruction and loss of lives were. The movie, however, was intentionally made to become overwhelming but you will soon come to realise that the scenes are realistic enough to demonstrate how a fiery eruption could possibly be. In some way or another, I can personally relate on the film and laughed at it during these distinct times when the Philippines and Mt. Pinatubo were said. I found it fascinating and somehow became proud that the Philippines was spoken even just for a couple of times. The audience probably felt the same way since I also heard them reacted. Besides from it being said, you can also see how the film tries to be realistic by means of using facts as comparisons and utilizing factual terminologies in seismology. Dantes Peak is entertaining in its own way. There might be a love story but it did not suppress the whole story up to the point that it covers the significance of the movie itself. Having a touch of romance in the film could benefit other people who will watch it solely for entertainment and not for educational purposes. Nonetheless, this movie will just only be another documentary about spewing volcanoes if the romance part is removed. Ultimately, this movie just proved that safety shouldnt be set aside from economic interest and others. Life is more important than any materialistic interests. It has just proven how cruel a volcanic activity can be, how it can destroy your properties and kill your loved ones with just a spit second while taking no considerations from where it will pass. Everything will just be a matter of time.
