Padmashree Dr.D.Y.Patil University: Department of Business Management

This document discusses sampling in research methodology. It defines sampling and provides terminology used in sampling. The reasons for sampling include it being less expensive than a census and allowing results to be generalized to the larger population. The main types of sampling covered are probability sampling methods like simple random sampling, systematic sampling, and stratified random sampling, as well as non-probability sampling. The document also discusses precision, confidence, and determining appropriate sample sizes in research.

Introduction
Sampling

Sampling is a process of selecting units from the population of interest so that by studying the sample we may fairly generalize our results back to population from which they were chosen

Precision And Confidence in Sampling

Precision : It refers to how close our estimate

is to the true population characteristic.

Confidence : It denotes how certain we are

that our estimates will really hold true for the population.

Narrower the range, lower is the confidence. Level of confidence can range from 0% to 100 %.
2/20/13 A 95% confidence is most accepted in

Sample Size
Sample size is governed by the extent of

precision or confidence desired by the researcher.

Sample sizes larger than 30 and less than 500

are appropriate for most research

Where samples are to be broken into sub-

samples, a min sample size of 30 for each category is necessary.

Conclusion
Awareness of sampling design and sample

size helps manager to understand why a particular method of sampling is used by researcher.

It facilitates understanding of cost implications

of different designs which enables the Manager to understand the risk they take in implementing changes based on research study.
