Computer Vision

Computer vision is the science and technology of machines that see. The field studies how artificial systems can extract information from images, divided into image enhancement to improve features for analysis, and image analysis to extract important features and understand scenes. Computer vision aims to perform tasks like recognition, motion analysis, and scene reconstruction, with applications including medical imaging, machine vision, autonomous vehicles, and surveillance.

COMPUTER VISION

By: Joydeep Dey

Vision
Vision is the task of seeing. To know what is where, by looking.

Why is Vision Interesting ?

Psychology
35% of cerebral cortex is for vision. Vision is how we experience the world.

Engineering
Want machines to interact with the world.

What is computer vision?

Computer vision is the science and technology of machines that see. Studies and describes the processes implemented in software and hardware behind artificial vision systems. As a scientific discipline, computer vision is concerned with the theory behind artificial systems that extract information from images.

Objective of Computer Vision

The field of computer vision can be
divided into two areas :

Image enhancement
Image analysis

Image enhancement
Refers to the sharpening of image features
such as edges, boundaries, or contrast to make an image more useful for display and analysis.

Image Analysis
Goal is to extract important features from image data, from which a description, interpretation, or understanding of the scene or object can be provided.

Typical tasks of computer vision

Recognition
> Identification > Detection Motion analysis > Egomotion > Tracking > Optical flow Scene reconstruction Image restoration

Applications of computer vision

Medical image processing. Machine Vision.

Optical sorting.
Military applications.

Surveillance.
Autonomous vehicles.
