ASSIGNMENT NO. 1
(a) Establish a shape of the cross-section that satisfies the following conditions: (i) have a maximum moment of inertia about axis x-x, (ii) fits within a 500x1000 mm fictitious frame and (iii) the section is composed of several rectangles, each has a maximum thickness of 100 mm. Determine the moment of inertia Ix of the section. (b) What is the shape with the minimum Ix that would fit within the same frame? Calculate its Ix. (c) If this area is shaped into a square, a circle or a diamond, what is the corresponding Ix for each case? (d) Compare the values of Ix for all the previous shapes and discuss in terms of efficiency. Q2: Determine the location of the centroid of the cross-section shown in Fig. 2. Also determine it Ix. Q3: The rectangular block shown in Fig. 3 has negligible weight and subjected to a vertical load of 600 kN applied at one corner. Determine the normal stress distribution on the section ABCD and plot this distribution over the section.

Q4: Fig. 4 shows a simply supported concrete beam prestressed with a parabolically draped tendon (cgs). Determine: (a) The equation of the tendon profile assuming the origin is located on the cgc at the left end of the tendon, and (b) The angular change between the tangents at each end of the tendon.
