Tuto 2

This document discusses two theories of how people learn English: behaviorism and cognitivism. According to behaviorism, learners are passive and learn through reinforcement and punishment, such as memorizing vocabulary. Cognitivism views learners as active creators who learn from their own experiences and asking questions to build knowledge. The document describes the authors' commitment to learning English through memorization at first according to behaviorism, but now taking a more active role in their learning through experiences, exploring ideas, and understanding concepts on a deeper level with teacher guidance according to cognitivism.

In the process of learning English, it requires many commitments, involvement and effort. Based on the behaviourism, beginners would used mimicry-memorisation to learn new words in English. This is also called parrot-fashion. To become a fluent speaker of English, one must have many effort, like try memorising grammar and English words. Factors that influence the way of learning English according to behaviourism are nature of reward, punishment and stimuli. Behaviorists view the learner as a passive person who responds to the stimuli.

What they learned from the environment (stimuli) then will force their responses to be reinforced and then turns out to be memorisation. The techniques of reinforcement and punishment have been employed by the teachers in the classrooms to promote desirable behaviour and discourage unwanted behaviour of the learners. This is why even though when some of us find it hard to learn English, but with forced factor which is we dont want to be punished, we can possess English. With this technique, everyone will get involve and they have to make an effort to learn to avoid being punished. Usually teachers will used task-based learning like homework.

However, based on the cognitivism, we learn English mostly from our own personals experiences which we get from the outside world. When we encounter something new, we have to reconcile it with our previous ideas and experience, maybe changing what we believe, or maybe discarding the new information as irrelevant. This involves schemes, where we replace the old schemes and replaced it with the new one. In any case, we are active creators of our own knowledge. To do this, we must ask questions, explore, and assess what we know. This is one of learners commitment and effort.

Based on our experiences in learning English, when we already understand about new things, teachers role is to guide us to enhance our further understanding and becoming expert learners. This gives them ever-broadening tools to keep learning. With a well-planned classroom environment, the students learn HOW TO LEARN. The cognitive view of learning is teachercentered, and information must be presented in an organized manner in order to achieve the most efficient learning.
