Fabric Care Labels: Washing (Laundry Tub)
Fabric Care Labels: Washing (Laundry Tub)
When choosing a fabric, it is important that you pay attention to the symbols on the care labels. The care labels are not always attached to the bolts of fabric, but you can ask the salesperson in the fabric shop to show you the label that came with the fabric. Here is a list of the most important symbols that will appear on the label for your fabric. What do the care symbols for textiles mean? Washing (laundry tub): The number in the laundry tub symbol indicates the hightest temperature at which the fabric can be washed. This temperature should never be exceeded! Alternatively, there may be dots in the laundry tub one dot means that you should wash the fabric with cold water, two dots mean warm water, and three dots mean hot water. The bar (or bars) under the laundry tub indicate that the fabric should be washed on a permanent press or delicate cycle. The hand symbol in the laundry tub indicates that the fabric should only be washed by hand, and not by machine. If the laundry tub is crossed out, the fabric should not be washed.

Bleaching (triangle): The triangle means that chlorine bleach may be used (right). If the triangle is crossed out, no bleach should be used (far right).
UP-TO-DA
Ironing (iron): If the iron symbol is marked with three dots, the fabric (e.g. linen) can be ironed at the high heat setting. Two dots mean that the fabric can be ironed at medium heat (e.g. wool), and one dot means iron at low heat (e.g. silk, synthetics). If the iron symbol has been crossed out, the fabric should not be ironed. The dots mark the temperature areas of irons with temperature regulators!

Drycleaning (circle = drycleaning drum): The letter in the circle indicates which cleaning solvent and which method can be used. A bar under the circle indicates that a delicate method should be used, with less mechanical wear on the fabric and less solvent. For A, both standard dry cleaning and bulk drycleaning are possible. For P, bulk drycleaning may be possible, but stadard drycleaning is possible. For P (with bar), F, and F with bar, bulk drycleaning is not possible and a special, delicate method is needed.
Drying (machine dryer drum): If the drum symbol is not crossed out (far left), machine drying is possible. Dots in the drum symbol indicate the drying temperatures. If the drum symbol is crossed out (left), the fabric should not be dried by machine. More Fabric tips
