Reading Lesson Plan Teacher: Katelyn Provo Grade Level: 1st School: Donelson Hills Elementary, Waterford, MI Date&

Time: Thursday, March 14, 2013, 1:20-2:20 pm Overall lesson topic/title: Readers compare and contrast information across text Common Core Standards: RL.1.1. Ask and answer questions about key details in a text. RI.1.9 Identify basic similarities in and differences between two texts on the same topic (e.g., in illustrations, descriptions, or procedures).

Objectives: Students will be able to compare and contrast information across texts.

Materials: Procedures and approximate time allocated for each event Opening (5 minutes) Call students to carpet. Review Yesterdays mini lesson. Students are familiar with nonfiction reading and spent the last three days exploring a center. They practiced using their Schema and background knowledge to prepare for reading.

Mini-Lesson (10 minutes) This week you have been in a nonfiction reading center researching your new topic. Today, you will compare and contrast the information you found in different books. Good readers and researchers notice conflicting information and continue reading to find proof for a specific fact. Model finding conflicting pieces of information in different texts. o (Surprising Sharks) This book says there are 500 different kinds of sharks. o (All About Sharks) This book says there are 250 kinds of sharks. o Which one is right? Explain that the reader must continue looking for more information to verify a specific fact.

o Turn-and-Talk When I say go, I want you to turn to a partner and share why you think it is important to notice and discuss how information is the same and different across texts. Go. Students turn to a partner sitting near them on the carpet. Teacher listens in on several partnerships. o After two minutes, call students to attention. Allow three students to share what their partnership discussed. Model writing conflicting facts o Students write down when they notice a conflicting fact and continue looking in other books to find more information to confirm one of the facts.

Nonfiction Reading Centers (10 Minutes) When you go off to your reading centers today, you are going to get a paper to record your facts. Your job is to look at some of the books in your center and look for any conflicting facts. You need to write down at least one set of conflicting facts and put a star next to the fact you think is true. Have students verbally repeat their job (mirror). Dismiss groups one-by-one to centers. Mid-way check o Make comments/observations about the facts written on childrens recording sheets. o Thumbs up if you have already written at least one set of conflicting facts.

Summary & Share (5 minutes) Call students back to the carpet: designated group member puts center bins away. Ask specific students if they would like to share their conflicting facts. Ask if any students were able to identify which fact was correct. The rest of the week you can continue looking for conflicting facts.

Independent Reading (30 minutes) Assessment Dismiss students for independent reading; review expectations. Observations during nonfiction reading centers. Conflicting facts written on students recording sheets. o Are students finding conflicting facts? o How are children dealing with conflicting facts when they find them?

Simplifications Different-leveled books at nonfiction centers and in book bins. Students are grouped by interest at nonfiction reading centers with a variety of reading levels. Struggling readers have peer mentors to assist them with challenging books. Struggling writers will orally state their facts and a teacher will scribe for them.
