James Cook was a British explorer born in 1728 who developed a fascination for the sea as a teenager. While serving in the Royal Navy during the Seven Years' War, Cook gained command of a ship. After the war ended, he took command of the Grenville and surveyed the coasts of Newfoundland. Cook observed a solar eclipse off the North American coast and sent details to the Royal Society, gaining their attention. The Royal Society then put Cook in command of the HMS Endeavour to lead the first of his three expeditions to explore the Pacific Ocean.
