Unit Title: The age of revolution, industry and empire (1750-1914)

Understandings: Students will understand that Enlightenment ideas influence revolutions. Causes and effects of the shift from manual to machine labor an increased demand for raw materials can lead to the exploitation of land and people. increased industrialization can accelerate colonialism and imperialism. capitalism fueled the Industrial Revolution. how individuals and nations rise to power. The actions of individuals and groups influence later generations.

Essential Questions: How have social movements pushed governments and societies to change? How does expansion cause conflict and change? How does government obtain power over its citizens? What determines a nations economic and governmental systems? How did industrialization lead to the Age of Empire? How did imperialism lead to interdependency among nations of the world?

Students will know: pros and cons of globalization. causes and effects of the shift from manual to machine labor. the main characteristics of various economic and government systems. the important figures of the time period (Enlightenment thinkers, government leaders, industry leaders, etc.).

Students will be able to: analyze primary and secondary source documents. analyze cause and effect relationships. evaluate points of view. formulate and supporting an opinion. differentiate opinion and fact. use data to make inferences. construct and interpret charts and graphs to explain particular events. understand the political and physical maps of specific regions.
