TOXICITY -
DESCRIPTION - White Spirit is a mixture of hydrocarbons in the boiling range 150 deg. C to 255 deg. C. The composition aries !idely" but compounds of the paraffin" naphthalene and olefin series generally predominate. White Spirit has a lo! degree of toxic ha#ard !hen handled normally on tan$ers. HAZARDS 1% &ecause of lo! toxicity and olatility the inhalation ha#ard is negligible" unless the cargo has been heated" in !hich case the increase in apor pressure might gi e rise to toxic concentrations of apor. 'nhalation of oily mists of sprays should be a oided. (ists or sprays may be encountered !hen oil is being loaded o erall. 2% The main problem !ith White Spirit is dermatitis" and this is the ha#ard" !hich !ill be of most importance to seamen. 'n addition to its defatting action on the s$in" White Spirit may also cause some irritation. White Spirits of naphthenic and aromatic origin ha e been sho!n to be more irritating than $erosenes of paraffin origin" but all types may cause dermatitis. )n prolonged contact the s$in becomes red" dry and scaly and ultimately begins to crac$. When in this condition" the s$in is susceptible to bacterial infection. *ermatitis problems are best pre ented by a oiding unnecessary contact !ith White Spirit. The s$in should not be cleaned of oil" tar or paint by the use of White Spirit. +% 'n contact !ith the eyes" White Spirit causes only slight transient irritation. PRECAUTIONS - Ta$e all necessary precautions to a oid accidental spillage into soil or !ater. Clean up spilled material immediately. 'f s$in contact is li$ely" !ear imper ious protecti e clothing and glo es" !hich are appropriate for the acti ity. ,ppropriate eye protection must be !orn. FIRST AID 1% INHALATION. 'f loss of consciousness" remo e person to fresh air" place in reco ery position and obtain prompt medical attention. ,dminister artificial respiration or Cardio/ulmonary massage 0esuscitation 1C/0% if necessary. 2% 232S: Wash thoroughly !ith copious 4uantities of !ater ensuring eyelids are $ept open. +% '562ST')5: The effect of drin$ing White Spirit is similar to that of drin$ing gasolene and the first aid action to be ta$en should be the same as that prescribed for gasolene.
