How A Comp Works

The central processing unit (CPU) is the control center of the computer that converts input data into output information by executing stored program instructions. When a computer is turned on, the basic input/output system (BIOS) ensures all motherboard devices are ready before loading the operating system software. The BIOS then checks that the RAM, hard drive, graphics card and other components are functioning properly through a power-on self-test (POST) before loading critical files that allow the computer to operate and boot into Windows.
