0 Tools for the Classroom

Web 2.0 Advantages


No need to save externally. Many open source software available. Engaging for students to work with various types of media. Teaches technology skills which covering other curricula content.

Web 2.0 Disadvantages


Creating log-ins. May require students to have access to computer/internet outside of school. Limited use depending on tool.

GoogleDocs
Account creation is completely free. Users can:
Upload documents (ie. Word), presentations (ie. PowerPoint), and spreadsheets (ie. Excel) Make changes to documents at any time. Collaborate with other users within the same document simultaneously.

GoogleDocs
Best in-class use:

o Document creation keeps students from having to save documents on a memory stick for working on at home.
Worst in-class use:

o Uploading documents with a table or creating a table in GoogleDocs is a bit glitchy.

GoogleSites
If you have signed up for GoogleDocs you can use the same log-in for GoogleSites (GoogleCalendar, etc). Allows users to create simple web-sites from a variety of templates.

Best in class use: o Students use the form of a website to present information on a particular topic. o Other students can visit the site and leave comments or ask questions. Best use for teachers: o Create your own webpage where you can post homework assignments, announcements or upcoming events.

Prezi
An online presentation tool. Free sign-up with no hidden fees (at least none that I have seen) Can collaborate with others in creating and editing a presentation. Require time for students to become familiar with Prezi tools.

Best in class uses:
Student presentations can really be jazzed up using Prezi. Presentations can include text, pictures or video.

Worst in class uses:


Can actually make viewers dizzy if you use too many twists and turns (think: less is more when creating).

Comic creation website. Sign-up is free although it doesnt give you access to all of the sites features. Free 30 day trial for schools which gives you access to:
o 50 student log-ins o Students can submit comics to teacher for approval o Approved comics are then posted in the Student Gallery for other students in the class to see and comment on

Best in class use:
Using Pixton to tell a story (LA or Art) or make a statement.

Worst in class use:


Clarify with students that it doesnt have to be funny.
