SAFE WORK PROCEDURES
Created: April 2012 Teck Construction LLP Page 1 BACKFILL PROCEDURES Potential Hazards Personal Protective Equipment Required 1. falls from elevated heights Hard hat CSA Boots Fall protection 2. pinch points upon opening/closing Eyewear Hearing protection Skin protection 3. striking persons or objects (clothing) 4. falling debris 5. electrical shock SAFE WORK PROCEDURE PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES Where multiple trade activity is scheduled, the general contractor is to review in advance the priority of work and schedule the appropriate time frame to allow each trade to complete their scope of work. Prior to any work commencing supervisors must conduct a hazard assessment of all applicable work areas. Any hazards that are found during the hazard assessment must be addressed prior to any work commencing. PROCEDURES FOR WORKING SAFELY 1. A designated spotter above will guide the dump truck to the back fill area. The spotter must wear a high visibility jacket. 2. The spotter will communicate to the dump truck operator to standby while he signals to the designated lower level spotter. 3. All workers at the backfilling location must wear high visibility vests. 4. Before starting, all personnel involved will be made aware of the dangers in this area and then notify all those on site. 5. The lower level spotter will communicate to equipment operators and workers to back away. 6. When backed away far enough, the lower level spotter will signal to above spotter an all clear sign. 7. The above spotter then signals the truck driver to proceed with the dump. 8. Equipment and workers shall not approach until the load is completely dumped. 9. Adherence to the OHS Regulation with regards to inspections, logbooks, proper apparel and procedure are necessary during backfilling.
