Shock Tube Example Problem

A 10m shock tube has a driver section at 200 kPa and a driven section at 5 kPa separated by a diaphragm. When the diaphragm ruptures, a shock moves through the 6m long driven section towards a test object 3m from the diaphragm. The problem asks to determine the shock velocity, induced velocity, Mach number of induced velocity, maximum test time, reflected shock velocity, and provide an x-t diagram.

Example Problem: A shock tube is 10 m long with a 30-cm diameter.

The driver section is 4 m long and contains air at 200 kPa; the driven
ti i 6 l d t i i t 5 kP A t t bj t i l d i section is 6 m long and contains air at 5 kPa. A test object is placed in
the driven section, 3 m from the diaphragm. Both sections initially
contain air at 25C. The diaphragm is suddenly ruptured, which causes
a shock to move into the driven section towards the test object a shock to move into the driven section towards the test object.
Determine the following:
(a) Shock velocity
(b) Shock induced velocity (b) Shock induced velocity
(c) Mach number of shock induced velocity
(d) Time between passage of normal shock and contact surface over test object
(maximumtest time) (maximum test time)
(e) Reflected shock velocity
(f) Sketch a x-t diagram showing the initial shock, reflected shock, and contact
surface as functions of time. surface as functions of time.
