Temperature Index (RTI)


(UL 746 B, IEC 216)


The figures on the UL cards denote the maximum
long-term service temperature for a specimen in air and
without external load. They are derived from Arrhenius
curves which, in turn, are obtained from highly time-
consuming and cost-intensive heat conditioning tests. The
Generic Temperature Index can be listed without a test, if
so required. The GTI sets out the minimum temperature
that the materials have been seen to withstand over the
long term. The GTI is thus considerably lower than the RTI.
A GTI of 65 C is entered for the Durethan grades and a
GTI of 75 C for the Pocan grades.
The criteria (critical properties) for the temperature index
are:

Elec. (electrical load): dielectric strength

Imp. (mechanical load with impact): primarily tensile
impact strength. In some cases, other tests, such as impact
strength, are also performed.

Str. (mechanical loading without impact): preferably
tensile strength, otherwise flexural strength.
