This document discusses standard and alternate pressure ratings for valves as allowed in API 6D. Standard valves use pressure/temperature limitations from API 6D Table 2.1, while alternate valves use limitations from ANSI B16.5. The pressure/temperature limitations between the two standards are slightly different, so test pressures also vary. All ball valve plants have standardized on the API 6D alternate requirement as of October 1991 for two plants and December 1991 for another, but some customers still require the lower standard pressures. Nameplates should clarify which standard a valve was tested to.

API 6D ALT PRESSURE RATINGS
References: API 6D Specification for Pipeline Valves
ASME/ANSI 616.5 Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings
This Engineering Bulletin has been issued to explain the use of both standard and alternate pressure
ratings as allowed in the Twentieth Edition of API 6D.
STANDARD Valves are designated as those constructed from materials listed in Table 3.1, Column 3 of
API 6D and whose Pressure/Temperature limitations are listed in Table 2.1 of API 6D.
ALTERNATE Valves are designated as those constructed from materials listed in Table 3.1, Column 4 of
API 6D which in turn refers to ANSI B16.5. In this case the Pressure/Temperature limitations given in ANSI
B16.5 apply.
Because the Pressurenemperature limitations in API 6D and ANSI B16.5 are slightly different, the
appropriate test pressures will also vary. A table of the various pressure differences is shown below.
All Ball Valve plants have now standardized on the API 6D ALT requirement. The actual date when the
changeover took place varies and are as follows:
BEZIERS OCTOBER 1 st, 1991
LIVINGSTON OCTOBER 1 st, 1991
VILLE PLATTE DECEMBER lst, 1991
Note: Although Livingston now make this design as standard, not all of their customers accept the higher
pressure ratings-some valves are therefore still being manufactured and tested to the lower pressures.
If in any doubt, please refer to the nameplate data for clarification.
TABLE 1 - API 6D TEST PRESSURES
NOTES:
1. The CWP is the Maximum Cold Working Pressure of the materials of construction for temperatures
between -20 and + 100 degrees F.
2. All pressures are in PSI.
When a CAMERON Valve has been tested to the higher pressures of API 6D Alternate, it is required that
the nameplate is stamped with the letters ALT after the API Class number.
