Standard 3

This document reflects on a portfolio artifact analyzing the candidate's competence in NAEYC Standard 3 on observing, documenting, and assessing children. The candidate completed a child portfolio during a preschool practicum course which demonstrated their understanding of using various assessment methods, including observations and parent-teacher conferences, to develop goals and plan activities to support all areas of child development. Through this process, the candidate learned the importance of collaboration between early childhood professionals to integrate subject matter into curriculum in a way that actively involves children in their own learning. This artifact shows the candidate's competence in the NAEYC standard by demonstrating their ability to work collaboratively with peers to create developmentally appropriate teaching approaches through hands-on experiences that promote learning across all domains

Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 3. Observing, Documenting and Assessing to support young children and families
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that child observation documentation,
and other forms of assessment are central to the practice of all early childhood professionals. They know
about and understand the goals, benefits, and uses of assessment. They know about and use systematic
observations documentation and other effective assessment strategies in a responsible way, in partnership
with families and other professionals, to positively influence the development and learning. (NAEYC, 2010)

Brief Description of Evidence:

During the spring semester of 2014 during my ECED 235-Preschool Practicum course, I engaged in the
assessment process of completing a child portfolio. Through numerous assessments it is evident that once a
teacher or child care provider has gained information we can use this information to develop and implement
appropriate activities and experiences that will help all children grow in all areas of development. Authentic
assessment and developmental assessment refer to the type of assessment, which is based on childrens
actual performance within their regular, real-life experiences, rather than on contrived testing measurement
devices. During the collection of assessments within this project I gained experience in observations,
parent/teacher conferences, setting goals for children and three way planning methods that will enhance a
childs development.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through completion of this unit plan framework I was able to use positive interaction and social skills
to work collaboratively with a small group of peers. I now know the importance of early childhood
professionals working together and sharing ideas about content and classroom practices. Through this artifact
I have learned how to integrate subject matter into an overall curriculum in which children are actively
involved in their own learning. Through the integration of subject areas, children are able to make real life
connections between content and the real world.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

This project is just one of many projects in which I worked collaboratively with peers to create,
implement, and reflect on current teaching trends and classroom practices as well as design developmentally
appropriate approaches for learning for school and at home. Through spending time researching various
teaching activities with peers, I feel more informed that my teaching practices are developmentally
appropriate for young children and will positively influence each childs development and learning by
providing him/her with well-rounded hands on experiences that promote learning from all domains.
