Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 2. BUILDING FAMILY AND COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that successful early childhood education
depends upon partnerships with childrens families and communities. They know about, understand, and value
the importance and complex characteristics of childrens families and communities. They use this understanding
to create respectful, reciprocal relationships that support and empower families, and to involve all families in
their childrens development and learning.

Brief Description of Evidence:

During the spring semester of 2014 during my ECED 204-Early Childhood family transitions course,
collaboratively I worked with a small group of peers to create family scenario using the give situations from our
instructor. The family scenarios were based around different characters and the situations or issues they may
face as a family. We created a childrens book to give insight to the different life changing things our families
were going through. In addition to the book, we found resources which our family could benefit from and
provided understandable and valuable insight to support respectful partnerships in the community.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through completion of this family scenarios project I was able to use positive interaction and social
skills to work collaboratively with a small group of peers. I now know the importance of working with families
and the community to create reciprocal relationships and provide resources. Through this artifact I can now say
I value and understand the meaning of family, no matter the situation. Through the integration of providing this
story through a childs reading skills, I have learned they will be able to see the world through their own eyes
and the importance of supporting and empowering families.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

This project is just one of many projects in which I worked collaboratively with peers to create, family
scenarios which reflect real life situations families or communities may be going through. Through spending
time discussing and interacting with others in my group, I found family involvement and empowerment to be
valued as very important for a childs learning and development. My competence in this standards helped
provide a new meaning partnerships between families and communities and the respectful relationships with
create with families we come in contact with while in the classroom.
